Why did sephiroth turn bad

sephiroth use to be good but he became evil when he found out who his mother was and turned on the soldiers who he was part of and killed cloud's best friend that made cloud angry and sephiroth on top of that was trying to destroy the world and make it total darkness another reason cloud hates sephiroth is because he kills Aries at the end of final fantasy 7
