Why does Riku have a bandana around his eyes in Kingdom Hearts 2

In Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and Kingdom Hearts II it is explained because "his eyes could never lie". Basically, when Riku is not wearing his blindfold, the darkness inside him is shown and he looks like Ansem or Xehanort's heartless.
