Tatsunoko vs. Capcom Review

Short Version: Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is a great tile. There is such an overabundance of things to complete and unlock that it will keep you going for hours. The only downside is the fact that you don’t know half of the roster (unless your a huge anime fanboy/girl), but overall a must own for the Wii.

Every few years Capcom releases a new line in the “Vs.” series, and past installments, such as Marvel vs. Capcom, have become the pedigree of fighting game awesomeness. Tatsunoko vs. Capcom takes everything that made the other games in the series so great and simplifies it so that even the players that have little to no skill (i.e. myself) can actually get into this title!

The fighting engine is perfect for anyone who doesn’t perform well in games such as Street Fighter IV or Marvel vs. Capcom. It’s made a lot more simple, but still keeps intact its depth, so there are still sick combos that the Capcom vets will be able to pull off. There is an initial learning gap for newbies, but the controls are simple enough that you will pick them up rather quickly. I have never been able to kick ass nearly as hard in other fighting games as I have been able to in Tatsunoko, and I love Capcom for that.

The roster covers a great majority of characters from different series. You have your Megaman and Street Fighter representatives, but Capcom also throws in newcomers that we have never seen in their previous installments such as Viewtiful Joe and Frank West. The one problem that I had with the roster is that to the majority of the audience, half of the roster is unknown. A lot of the characters have never been seen on these shores before, so it’s a little odd when you start fighting a giant golden lighter (I’m not making that up, it’s actually a character). The roster situation matters very little once you get into the game though, so I wouldn’t let the fact that you don’t know what a Yatterman-1 is steer you away from this game.

The online for this title is actually decent, it’s no PSN or Xbox Live, but anyone who owns a Wii isn’t expecting it to be. Capcom did a pretty good job with the online play and there is little to no lag, so players can test their skills against players from all over the place without being booted from a live game. I played online with varying amounts of success, and it’s a ton of fun. The lack of support for voice chat is a swift kick in the nads, but I don’t really want to hear my competition yelling, “Yeah! I just hadoukened your ass!”.

Extras in this game are everywhere! It’s going to take you a very, very long time to unlock everything; From the characters to all of the concept art, there is far too much of it and that’s not a bad thing! More content, equals more time of your life being consumed by this game.

Capcom went through a cubic crap ton of legal mumbo jumbo to get this game over here and all of their effort is appreciated and has paid off for all of us Wii gamers. It has been a very long time since we have seen some real gamer games on the Wii, and finally Wii players’ cries to the heavens have been answered! Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is a great fighting game that should, nay, needs to be in your Wii library right next to Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
