Shadow Warrior 2 is an upcoming first-person shooter video game in development by indie development studio Flying Wild Hog and published by Devolver Digital. It is the sequel to the 2013 reboot of Shadow Warrior. While this game does not have an official release date it is expected to be releasing on the Xbox One, PC, Mac, Linux and PS4 sometime in 2016. The original game in the series was not particularly well loved but Devolver Digital and Flying Wild Hog believe it has done enough in the sequel to make this one of their more popular games. The first Shadow Warrior that Devolver and Flying Wild Hog made was actually a remake of an older game with the second being a direct sequel.
Shadow Warrior 2 is being developed by Flying Wild Hog once again using their in-house Road Hog Engine. This is the same engine that was used to build Shadow Warrior and that will allow the sequel to look and act like the original. Shadow Warrior 2 was first teased on social media on the official Twitter account of the series and the publisher. In true Devolver and Flying Wild Hog fashion, the companies working on the game teased the title by posting on Twitter, “Who wants some more wang?” On June 11, 2015, publisher Devolver Digital officially announced Shadow Warrior 2 and said it was slated for release in 2016.
During part of the announcement of the game the company underlined what fans of the series expect from the title. “The incredible reception of Shadow Warrior from both longtime fans and gamers new to the series was overwhelming,” said Michal Szustak, Studio Director at Flying Wild Hog. “Shadow Warrior 2 will expand on and improve every element that made the original so unique and strike a balance between classic FPS action and modern design.” Alongside the announcement of the game, the company announced it would be showing off the game at E3 and the company offered a first look to anyone who wanted to log onto Twitch to get a first look on June 15, 2015.
The game picks up five years after the end of the first Shadow Warrior. The modern ninja Lo Wang has been dealing with the shattered alliance between his deceitful former boss and the ancient gods of the shadow realm. Despite what were always noble intentions, Lo Wang’s attempt to destroy the darkness ended up doing the opposite and his actions actually corrupted the world. This new world is a combination of the earth we know and the demon realm. The actions of the first game have actually ushered in a new order where humans and demons live side by side.
The developers have said that “this once feared warrior now lives in the shifting wildlands outside the reach of his enemies and the neon glow of Zilla’s cybernetic metropolis, scratching out a meager existence as a hired sword for the local Yakuza clans. When a simple mission goes wrong, Lo Wang is drawn into a volatile conflict between a brilliant young scientist, a controversial cult leader, and a terrifying new drug known as Shade. The sharp-tongued hero must once again wield lethal blades, staggering firepower, and archaic magic to purge the world of evil.”
Shadow Warrior 2 can be played in single-player mode or in a new 4-player co-op mode. In co-op mode, each player experiences the narrative as the main character, Lo Wang but sees other players as different anonymous ninjas. When playing as Lo Wang you will have access to a ton of different weapons, both guns you can shoot and blades you can slice. In total, the game features over 70 different weapons. Killing enemies will level up weapons and reward the player with gems to augment their equipment with element properties and buffs. Among the blades offered up in Shadow Warrior 2 are a razor sharp katana, short swords, crescent blades, and hand claws.
The level environments are more open and non-linear than in the previous title. There are primary missions that will allow the story to unfold and a number of different side quests players can undertake. New traversal mechanics have been added such as climbing walls and double jumping to allow for more exploration. Mission structure in Shadow Warrior 2 is less restricted than its prequel, players can now revisit earlier missions to re-engage past enemies in order to upgrade Wang’s skills. The game features a hub area where the player can acquire quests and upgrade their abilities before beginning a mission. Every mission, except for story-specific events, will feature procedurally generated level design and content, including randomized enemy positions, terrain, buildings, and weather conditions. This makes the world different every time you play through a mission. The game utilises a procedural damage system that allows players to cut and blow off enemy limbs and body parts in an over the top way these two companies are well known for.
Lo Wang is the only named character we know is actually going to be appearing in the game. There are a number of unnamed NPCs that appear in the game, both as teammates and as enemies. While the game does feature a teamwork type system with up to four players, only Lo Wang is ever really named. When the four players take up the fight together, the other three players are always seen as being anonymous unnamed ninjas. This allows the game to focus more on the named main character and even further promote his story. There are also a number of different demon characters that will appear in the game but as of right now, none of those characters have been any kind of names. Boss demons have been singled out in the announcement trailer but know name was given.
