‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ Rezurrection DLC Review

While the majority of the focus for the past three Call of Duty: Black Ops map packs has been on the multiplayer, the newest DLC, Rezurrection, puts the attention where it rightfully belongs: on the zombies.

Delivering only one new zombie map, and four of the zombie maps from World at War, Rezurrection is a high-priced offering for fans of the zombie-slaying mode.  But, with the zombie mode relying mostly on a gimmick, has Rezurrection overstayed the welcome of what was once a clever distraction in Black Ops? Read on to find out.

Yes, Rezurrection does feature Nacht der Untoten, Verruckt, Shi No Numa and Der Riese, remastered in the Black Ops engine, but if you’re a Call of Duty fan, and one who loves the zombie mode, you’ve already played through these maps dozens of times when they first released. The addition of power-ups and new weapons, along with all of the new tropes Treyarch brought to Black Ops, are available, but it’s the façade of the map that makes the zombie mode, and this isn’t anything new.

Where most are going to be looking to Rezurrection to determine whether it’s worth the 1200 MS Point price tag is the new map, Moon. Set on an abandoned (or is it?) space station, Moon uses low gravity, sci-fi weaponry, and new astronaut enemies to create a creepy “zombies in space” atmosphere.

There’s a storyline at play — gamers will finally complete Richtofen’s grand scheme — which will lead to a very hard to obtain Easter Egg, but Moon is really all about playing with some new toys. These two new weapons, the Wave Gun and the Quantum Entanglement Device, will make zombie killing much more satisfying and exciting to watch. If you’ve ever thought that a military-based FPS could do with some ray guns, now’s your chance to see your dreams come true.

And really that’s Moon in a nutshell. Like Call of the Dead’s stellar cast and Shangri-La’s death traps, Moon is somewhat of a one-trick-pony. You’ll use the experience up for as long as it takes, but never does the it evolve beyond what gamers have seen before. It’s definitely a cool idea, and one that could have made Moon the second best zombie add-on to a multiplayer map pack, but for 1200 MS Points, it’s not going to be for most people.

Zombie mode fans should absolutely seek out Moon because, for its atmosphere and design, it’s something special. It just isn’t for gamers that look at the zombie mode as a casual distraction.
