Yes, the third and final episode of the epic trilogy, Hector: Badge of Carnage has been released – and “Episode 3: Beyond Reasonable Doom” brings the entire story to a gassy (maybe that’s a good thing) ending.
Does the last entry wrap up the story in a delicious bacon wrapped hot dog of delight or is it just a bucket of gruel?
The third installment in Hector: Badge of Carnage, aptly called “Beyond Reasonable Doom” is again, a direct continuation of the previous episode – wherein protagonist Detective Inspector Hector and his somewhat bumbling, if only slightly useful partner, Lambert have discovered the true fiend behind the Clapper’s Wreake terrorism. Not going to spoil the identity, but when I found out at the end of Episode 2, it was a great surprise.
If you checked out our prior coverage of the series, you’ll find that the titles are pretty similar in gameplay. Then again, it’s an adventure game, so why play “Episode 1: We Negotiate With Terrorists,” as well as “Episode 2: Senseless Acts of Justice?” In a word, the writing. Of course, the gameplay for Episode 3 remains the same as it had been in the prior two installment. Hector must negotiate his way through solving problems in the most asinine way imaginable.
The puzzles are still presented in an intuitive way where, with just a little bit of thinking, players will surely get to the end of each solution. Having trouble with a particular problem? The game’s hint system will chastise players – but still offer assistance to anyone who is boggled. Straandlooper once again keeps the system simple and it worked out in the best way it could – leaving the rest of the effort to be concentrated toward the game’s excellent writing.
If there’s any one aspect about the Hector series of games that will keep players going, as mentioned, it is the witty writing. Sharp, current, shocking, and incredibly funny are only a few ways to describe the story and dialogue. Honestly, for a bundle of games that are this cheap, the reward is great. Hector: Badge of Carnage definitely drums up those old feelings of joy that players might remember from titles like Full Throttle and Sam & Max.
If you’re unsure, at least check out the first game – it’s very likely that you’ll be happy you did.
