Looking Ahead: PS4 Games Coming In Early 2014 You Will Want To Play

It’s been a long wait, but the PlayStation 4 is finally here. And while there are reasons beyond gaming to like the PS4, the games so far haven’t been too hot. The first line-up of games to hit the console has been underwhelming, whether it’s Killzone: Shadow Fall or Knack.

None of the games have really taken full advantage of the new hardware, and they aren’t what could be considered the flagship titles for the PS4 either. They say good things come to those who wait, and that’s what the beginning of next year promises. Here are our picks to watch out for in early 2014 for your PS4, which you should pick over the Xbox One.

Watch Dogs

Perhaps the most hotly anticipated new title of 2014 is Watch Dogs, Ubisoft’s new stealth-based action adventure game set in an open world environment. The single player campaign has you playing as Aiden Pearce, an elite hacker, and it’s all about hacking into and beating enemies. But the game’s real promise lies in the multiplayer mode, where one player enters the world and tries to hack data from another player, who is unaware of the hacker’s identity. The second player must figure out who the hacker is and stop the data download by killing him or making him run away. Oh, this is going to be fun!

Metal Gear Solid V — Ground Zeroes / The Phantom Pain

Solid Snake is back! The newest installment of Metal Gear Solid is actually in two parts: Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain. The former is a prologue, set in 1975, which leads to the events in Phantom Pain, set 9 years later. This will be the first truly open-world MGS title, letting players use different modes of transportation to get to missions while also choosing any order for the story missions to play out in. And of course, you can expect an engrossing storyline and the cinematic experience that makes the MGS franchise so popular.

Wolfenstein: The New Order

What would the world be like if the Nazis won World War II with the aid of some futuristic super-weapons? Well, that’s the world B.J. Blazkowicz finds himself in. Wolfenstein 3D was one of the games that started the first person shooter revolution, and its new installment looks to bring more of that arcade mayhem to your TV screen. There will be plenty of crazy guns, weird enemies, and plenty of blood in your quest to end the Nazi menace once and for all. Hey, if that’s not a recipe for fun, what is?

Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition

The granddaddy of action role-playing games is coming to the Playstation 4! Windows and Mac already have tasted Diablo 3, as has the PS3, but the Ultimate Evil Edition is a whole new box of awesomeness for console gamers as it includes the original game as well as the new Reaper of Souls expansion pack. It’s time to go on an epic demon-hunting quest, hacking and slashing your way to make sure mankind isn’t destroyed by the forces of Malthael, the angel of death.

Infamous: Second Son

If you thought the conduits—superhumans who absorb powers—were defeated at the end of Infamous 2, think again. A few have survived, including graffiti artist Delsin Rowe. And he’s ready to take on an oppressive government as well as evil conduits to make the world a better place again. Infamous: Second Son has many of the elements of its predecessor, like parkour, and adds a few new ones, like an on-screen reticule to shoot with. You know you want this.

Daylight

Can a cell phone be the best weapon in a video game? That’s all Daylight arms you with, as you wake up in a dark hospital, suffering from amnesia, with only your phone to light your way. The game has a “procedurally generated world,” which gives a different environment in each new game, with new content and encounters. Everything always keeps changing, so it’s a new experience with every play. It’s spooky, it’s creepy, it’s creative and it’s a must-have game.

Driveclub

Driveclub is what Sony envisions racing games on the PS4 should be, partnering with Evolution Studios (the guys behind MotorStorm) to come up with a road racer. Of course it has great visuals and stellar gameplay, but Driveclub’s key feature is that it’s a social racing game. Players create clubs, manage teams, join other clubs and battle it out as units, not just individuals. It could just be the trend-setter in video game racing.

Carmageddon: Reincarnation

It was one of the most controversial games of the 90s. To quench your bloodthirst, Carmageddon is back, after a successful Kickstarter campaign. I tried three drafts to describe the game’s mayhem, but nothing works as well as developer Stainless Games’ own description: “Carmageddon: Reincarnation is going to reintroduce the gaming world to the original freeform driving sensation, where pedestrians (and cows) equal points and your opponents are a bunch of crazies in a twisted mix of automotive killing machines. It’s the racing game where racing is for wimps.” Yeah!

What Are You Looking Forward To?

Hey, this isn’t an exhaustive list by any means. There are bound to be PS4 games out there that aren’t mentioned here, like these great free-to-play titles. So spill; what’s on your wishlist?
