3 Amazing Role Playing Games for Android Phones and Tablets

Tired of crappy mobile RPGs that feel like bargain mobile games that someone coded in an hour from their basement? There’s no reason for you to keep suffering through them when there are plenty of high-quality RPGs on the Google Play Store – some so beautiful and polished that you might confuse them for AAA titles.

Last year, we covered three Android RPGs that rock and more recently we explored a few roguelikes for Android. Since then, the RPG landscape of Android has seen games come and go and you’d be missing out if you don’t give these ones a try. Best of all, they’re available for free. What are you waiting for?

SoulCraft

SoulCraft has been around for a while but it consistently hits the “top Android RPGs” charts around the Internet. It’s an action RPG in the same vein as Diablo and Torchlight that you can carry around with you right on your phone or tablet. The graphics are stylized and pleasing to the eye – not exactly next-gen quality but they’re pretty darn good.

In this game, you’ll find addicting hack-and-slash gameplay alongside immersive dungeon crawling. There are multiple game modes you can play, including Time Runs, Arenas, Crystal Defense, Boss Fights, and more. Though the game is free to play, you can support the developers by purchasing gold within the app.

All in all, SoulCraft is a PC-quality game that’s available for free on Android. Eventually, you’ll be able to play with and against your friends in multiplayer mode, but for now you can enjoy the varied single-play gameplay modes.

Arcane Legends

I’ve never been a big fan of MMORPGs on mobile devices but Arcane Legends is one of the few that have made me reconsider my position. Voted the Best Mobile MMO in 2012 by Massively, Arcane Legends has enough going for it to break most preconceptions that people have about mobile MMORPGs.

Choose from three different classes (Warrior, Mage, or Rogue) and build up a stable full of in-game pets that fight alongside you as you explore the world. As you progress through the game you’ll unlock special abilities and discover new pets, allowing you to further define your desired style of gameplay.

The graphics are somewhat primitive but highly stylized and they remind me of a slightly less refined World of Warcraft. That said, they aren’t ugly by any means. Combined with its gameplay, Arcane Legends is lots of fun and most certainly worth a try.

Galaxy on Fire 2

The RPG genre is frequently swamped with fantasy themes and motifs, but here’s one Android RPG that breaks the mold. Galaxy on Fire 2 is a space-themed RPG adventure that brings the full glory of galactic combat and trading right to your fingertips. The graphics are beautiful and the environments are reminiscent of the infamous EVE Online.

The main campaign is free and will take you on a 10-hour journey across the galaxy to fend off alien raiders and vile space pirates. There are two addons you can purchase within the game – Valkyrie and Supernova – that will further extend the storyline with more content. In addition to the main storyline, you can explore the universe at your own pace, performing side missions and mining asteroids for resources.

As you play, you can upgrade your ship with new armor, weapons, mining drills, defensive mountings, and more. The pace of progression is pretty good and you’ll rarely encounter a time when there isn’t much to do. The control scheme is pretty basic (as expected for a mobile game) and the gameplay does become a bit repetitive after a while, but it’s definitely fun while it lasts.
