E3 2014 has come and gone. Plenty of exciting games were shown off and announced, and everything was great, at least at the time. Now that the dust has settled and everyone’s excitement has worn off, it’s time to remember some the games we all thought would be at E3, but sadly, were missing in action.
Did E3 feature enough to keep us excited for a while? Most definitely, but just think about how much better it could have been if these games had also made an appearance, even if it was just in the form of a teaser trailer to let us know that it’s officially coming.
It’s been a long time, too long if you ask me, since Bethesda released a proper Fallout game. Sure, there was Fallout New Vegas, but that was developed by Obsidian Entertainment. Even that game was released all the way back in 2010, with Fallout 3 released two years before that. Quite frankly, it’s time. This was definitely wishful thinking, because Bethesda didn’t announce anything in the lead up, or give any indication that it was coming, but with a six year gap from the last game in the series developed by Bethesda Game Studios, it just made sense.
The fact is, the team just isn’t ready to show anything. According to an interview with RockPaperShotgun, Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard said that they don’t have any time frame to announce anything. So it wasn’t really a game that was missing from E3 at, but rather just a game that fans were really hoping to see, especially with it being so long.
Since we know that Bethesda isn’t ready to show anything, a teaser just to remind everyone that the game is coming would have done the job. It’s pretty obvious that the team is working on a Fallout release. The last games were a massive success, so it would be insane if a new one wasn’t coming. Even a simple piece of art and a logo during one of the hardware company’s press conferences would have sufficed. Oh well, patience is a virtue.
Microsoft had some really cool stuff to show at E3, but much of it was multiplatform content. Quantum Break, on the other hand, is a Xbox One exclusive, which is something that could really generate some excitement during the press conference. With it receiving a huge push at E3 last year, it only seemed logical that it would be shown off again, only this time with some actual playable builds. Instead, we saw nothing, which is not only surprising, but a little scary, as it could mean the game is not coming along as nicely as we’d hoped. At least, that was initial thought, but thankfully, developer Remedy Entertainemnt has announced that the game will be playable at Gamescon in Germany this August, which bodes well for where the game is heading.
There could be a range of reasons why this one wasn’t featured, but the most likely one is that, since we know it will be playable in just a couple of months, the build just wasn’t quite ready to be played in June, and with the game already getting the big reveal at E3 last year, it’s likely they wanted to hold off until they felt comfortable putting it in the hands of players. Also, Microsoft could have held it back so it had something big to show off at Gamescon, instead of retreading the same demos from E3.
Clearly they are close to a state that is playable, but if it wasn’t quite there, a gameplay trailer would have sufficed. With a teaser trailer hitting E3 last year, a full gameplay trailer would have been quite exciting. The third-person action game is promised to have some very interesting time-manipulation mechanics, and even seeing how those work in video form would have told us a great deal more about what to expect when we get our hands on it in Germany.
Right before E3 started, Rockstar announced that it would have a next-gen game to show off at E3 this year. Logic said that it would be Grand Theft Auto 5 on the PS4 and Xbox One, and as is usually the case, logic was right. However, fans of Rockstar’s cowboy masterpiece were hoping that a new Red Dead game would be what was shown. (There were even those talking about a sequel to Bully, but Red Dead seemed a far more likely scenario.)
It’s clear that Rockstar wanted to keep everyone’s focus on the re-release of GTA V, which is a smart move. Sure, a lot of gamers aren’t going to buy the same game again, but by announcing a new release from a beloved franchise alongside a prettier version of a game we’ve all played would be a bad decision, as no one would be talking about the new GTA at all. Not to mention the fact that Rockstar is not a studio known for releasing multiple games in quick succession, so seeing it announce two games at one E3 would be unheard of.
It’s difficult to say with this one, because we don’t even know if there is anything in a new Red Dead to show. They could always go the way the first trailer for Mortal Kombat X went, and release a CG video just to get people excited, but that’s not Rockstar’s way. When they announce something, they go all out, and when they are ready to reveal a new Red Dead game, it’s likely to be something special.
