Everyone loves a freebie, right? And what’s better than free games? Steam’s largest ever free weekend begins today, and with it brings 10 awesome games to play for free for the next few days. Everything from puzzler, to shooter, to driving games are on offer. And if you love them, you can also purchase them at a steep discount. But what are they?

Awesomenauts

This game is a curious little beast. Awesomenauts adopts elements from platform games (like the Mario series), as well as fighting games (Like Tekken), and melds them together in a 2D battle arena violence-a-thon. The aim of the game is simple; you have to defend your home base (called a Solar Collector), whilst trying to destroy that of your opponent. In short, Awesomenauts is simple, mindless, co-operative fun.

Blade Symphony

Remember Jedi Knight? The makers of Blade Symphony do, given their game is a homage to the lightsaber fights in this Star Wars classic. This multiplayer, co-operative was funded off the back of a nostalgia-fueled Kickstarter, and allows players to hack-and-slash their way to victory in 1×1, 2×2 and deathmatch battles. Jedi powers not included.

Company Of Heroes 2

Company Of Heroes is a frost-bitten homage to Age of Empires with a hint of vodka on its breath. This Eastern Front themed RTS allows you to beat-back the Nazi hordes in Operation Barbarosa, whilst you manage units and resources. It’s not just the Germans who are out to get you; your units can also be felled by cold weather and snow, thanks to CoH2’s hyper-realistic weather simulator. Onwards comrades!

Don’t Starve

Don’t Starve is an adventure game, with elements of the survival and rogue-like genre. As the name suggests, the aim of the game is to avoid starvation by scavenging for food, whilst simultaneously protecting yourself from the randomly generated nasties wandering the landscape. If you enjoyed the Walking Dead games, you’ll love Don’t Starve.

Grid 2

Grid 2 isn’t just another racing game. It’s a hyper-realistic journey through the past 40 years of motoring, putting you behind the wheel of some of the most iconic cars ever to spew toxic fumes into the atmosphere. Unlike most racing games, Grid 2 doesn’t have a cockpit view. But that’s not a bad thing, as you can soak up the stunning vistas of the cities you visit, spanning four continents.

Injustice: Gods Among Us

Injustice: Gods Among Us is an arena-battling game set in the DC universe. We’ve previously reviewed it for Android, although the concept is much the same for the PC. You punch, block and kick your way to victory, taking on the likes of Bane, Superman and The Flash. It’s not terribly cerebral, and but it’s a great, mindless way to pass a couple of hours.

Killing Floor

Killing Floor is a fast-paced co-operative FPS that pits you against waves of mindless zombies who are all-too eager to take a chunk out of you. If you’ve played No Room Left In Hell, Killing Floor will feel incredibly familiar.

Payday 2

Ever wanted to rob a bank? Payday 2 is a recidivist romp through organized criminality, allowing you to rob, pillage and murder your way to a criminal empire without getting a 25-to-life jail sentence. And you can even bring an accomplice, as Payday 2 comes with a much-feted co-op mode. It’s violent. It’s fun. It’s awesome.

Trine 2

When you play fantasy RPGs, do you prefer to play as a warrior, a wizard or a thief? Side-scrolling fantasy puzzler Trine 2 doesn’t force you to make that choice, as you play all three, switching between characters whenever the problem requires it. This story-driven game supports both a single-player mode, as well as a three player co-operative mode. Because let’s face it. Who wants to hunt goblins alone?

X-Com: Enemy Unknown

Earth has been invaded by aliens, and it’s up to you to stop them in their tracks. Welcome to X-Com: Enemy Unknown; a turn-based tactical shooter, in the hugely popular X-Com series. Whilst you complete missions and shoot aliens, you are also expected to salvage technology and create bigger and stronger weapons. It’s great fun, and it looks amazing too.
