My own feeling has always been that the most important element is simply to enjoy what you are doing. As long as you aren't harming other people, I've never really imagined that there's too much of a problem. I do appreciate, however, that you may have some concerns about the thoughts of others.
Do you really wish to be seen in a negative light? Often, such comments will tend to come from those who don't really have an understanding of what playing games really means. They may not appreciate the fact that you need to be solving a lot of logical puzzles, before you can even make real progress.
That's particularly understandable when you are thinking about an older generation. For some older people, computers and consoles are representative of a source of mystery. They find that it's hard to really understand what is going on at all. It should come as no surprise, in these circumstances, to find that they don't see any real value in what you are doing.
So how can you seek to combat these thoughts? I believe that one way of doing so is by demonstrating that you have an enormous amount to offer. There's absolutely nothing wrong with gaming, although it can become a problem, if it's associated with you becoming withdrawn, or seeming to ignore people.
Equally, I have played games that actually seem to promote a real sense of being more social. It's clear that many multi-player games attempt to achieve this aim. If your games playing approach is actually producing positive outcomes in other areas of your life, then you can expect to see a similarly positive reaction from those around you.
With this in mind, it might be worth thinking about the games that you play and the way in which you interact. Most of us tend to reach for the same games over a period of time, before a new release causes us to look elsewhere. When choosing a new game, we may make such a decision based upon a number of factors.
If we've played previous versions of a specific title, for example, then it's natural that we may wish to look at taking things to a new level. This is something that will undoubtedly appeal to you. It may be the case that you have never really given any consideration to the type of games that you play.
It could be time to think about improving the entire approach that you take to video games.
