Destiny’s end-game grind has begun and chances are if you’ve hit the level cap, you’ll be looking to get your hands on some sweet new gear that will push your Light level way beyond 20. Here are some of the best ways to maximise your chances of getting something shiny and special. Bear in mind, though, that Legendary Engrams don’t always contain Legendary items – more often than not, they hold high-end Rares, special currency or upgrade materials, and even when a purple item does pop, it may not be suitable for your current class. Good luck!
If you’re looking to grind solo, the Ishtar Commons area of Venus is currently the best place to do it. In a Patrol freeroam session, hop on your Sparrow and hang a right – follow the path past the Fallen patrol, then take a left at the junction where more Fallen are hanging out. Cut through the buildings and tunnels and when you get to the Commons area, head to the far side where waves of Goblins will spawn fairly rapidly in the same spot, along with a few Fallen every now and again to kill the downtime as you wait for the Goblins to respawn. Hang around here and you can quickly amass a fair pile of Engrams, including the odd Legendary one if you strike it lucky. You’ll mostly hit green and blue Engrams, but these will also help you towards Option 4…
With a team, the Into The Nexus Strike mission is currently regarded as the quickest way to rack up Engrams, and the technique is simple enough so long as you don’t mind racking up a good few deaths in the process. Towards the end of the Strike, there’s a dark underground path leading down towards the boss and a large cluster of Vex chilling out on a corner. Take out the lot (a grenade or Super should kill most), hoover up any Engrams that drop then all leap off the cliff to your collective dooms. You’ll respawn right before the Vex horde, allowing you to rinse and repeat to your heart’s content. Just make sure your whole team knows the plan – if they head on to the boss rather than commiting suicide, it’ll just slow the whole process down massively.
Competitive multiplayer might not be the most efficient way of securing Legendary gear but provided you’re decent at it, it’s a reliable source of gear of all kinds and arguably the most enjoyable way to grind. A useful bonus is that you’ll also be earning Crucible Ranks and Marks as you do battle with your fellow players, which allow you to pick up the odd bit of purple equipment whether luck is on your side or not. Shorter games are better for this, particularly those with lower players counts like Rumble and Skirmish. The latter in particular is really good as if your team can secure an early lead, you can often make weaker players quit out in frustration – a three-on-two advantage is huge in this mode and often leads to the remaining members quitting too, ending the match early while still rewarding the victors.
If all else fails and you can’t get a purple drop no matter what you try, there’s always the Cryptarch. The more Engrams you have him decrypt, the higher his level will go and while the impact of this level on drop rates and item quality is still unknown at this point, the real perk to this is the regular flow of care packages you receive every time he hits a new level milestone after level 3. These consist of up to three special Engrams, often including Legendary ones. So just keep turning in those green and blue junk Engrams and eventually, this guy will (hopefully) see you right.
Will the Vault Of Glass Raid change this when it launches tomorrow? Will Bungie patch or remove any of these methods? Or will new ways to grab rare loot be discovered? Watch this space and you’ll find out!
