Coastal Forest
Part 1: A Survivor is Born
First thing’s first, start swinging. Disrupt the bundle next to you to push it into the candles. Then bump into the burning pole next to you. Follow the on-screen prompt at the bottom of the pit, and then start moving.
Now you’ll meet a new mechanic for TR, picking up torches and burning stuff with them. It’s pretty straightforward.
Now you’ll need to relight your torch and look for something ‘splodey. No problem. The problem comes after you squeeze through the next section and come under attack. You’ll learn another quick time response trick in exchange.
In the smuggler’s den, relight your torch. Burn the two things holding the hanging platform. Then go up and jump onto it. You’ll watch it trigger some boxes falling into a “cage” at the end of the walkway. Go there, set your timing with the water, light the crates, and then shove the cage. It’ll send fire down to the big blockage.
Then it’s time to run for your life. Expect at least one more quick time event along the way, but just keep moving forward. When you reach a climb, it’s just pulling on the triggers in succession, and watching for dodge opportunities.
Enjoy the pretty view when you break out into the open. Wow! Now, follow the path. It’s pretty clear, and you’ll learn basic mechanics along the way. If you played Assassin’s Creed, this will be very familiar, jumping, grabbing, leaping up and sideways while climbing… No problem.
After you learn the wall scramble, you’ll get a two-way radio, your first real piece of equipment. Keep following the path, you’ll hit a false jumping opportunity, and then find a place to camp out.
Part 2: On the Hunt
After your flashbacks, it’s time to get moving. Look for quivers with arrows, and climb on top of the bunker to reach the bow. Then, follow the instructions to get your first kill.
In case you’re not picking up what the game is putting down, this is gonna be a bit more sandboxy than you may be used to for Tomb Raider. Feel free to look around the forest before moving back to camp. Look for other things to shoot, including Totem Targets dangling from trees.
Back at camp you’ll get to assign your first XP bonus from a number of options. Hit a shoulder button for a second menu of choices. I chose more accurate bow shooting.
If you haven’t yet, take this time to explore this chunk of forest a bit, before you head into the bunker, which is where your next checkpoint is. Make sure you have a complete compliment of 20 arrows, and get the lay of the land. If you get lost, you can follow the river back to where you need to be.
At the end of the bunker tunnel, look for a box with your first Relic in it. Burn the obstacle to find your next tool, which you can put to use immediately.
When you exit the bunker, you’ll learn how to extinguish your torch. Consider that a cue to do so.
Follow the trail for a convo and a cutscene, and then some fast shooting with your bow.
After another cutscene, look for a document on the bench near you. Then, go to the brazier, light your torch, and burn the bundle for some salvage. Then head out after your homie. You’ll learn how to dodge enemies, and have some wolves to deal with.
After another cutscene, look for a document on the bench near you. Then, go to the brazier, light your torch, and burn the bundle for some salvage. Then head out after your homie. You’ll learn how to dodge enemies, and have some wolves to deal with, or you can just keep running to meet up with dudeface. I left the wolves for later.
Now it’s time for a fetch quest. Look to the left of the doors for a document . There’s a totem to the right, too. Activate your survival vision, look for a small crate. In it is enough salvage to upgrade your axe at the campfire.
Open the big crate by the campfire with your new axe to recoup your salvage. I chose to go exploring before I used the axe to open the door. You can kill wolves and other critters, find more salvage (there’s another big crate by the campfire where you started this section), and get the lay of the land.
Once you have the new axe and you’re ready to move on, head for the gate and use the axe to open it. That’ll take you to the next area.
Part 3: Lara’s First Gun
Welcome to the wonderful and familiar world of chest-high walls! A new lesson, this one in finding cover.
Use your survival vision to illuminate the bad guys so you can avoid them while staying behind cover. Keep an eye out for the destination marker, and go slow.
After the hunt will be some quick-timey goodness. Be prepared, the game will not be patient.
When you reach the next section, you’ll actually get to use a gun for the first time. Learn fast! After that, if the game switches you to the bow from the gun, it’s because you’re about to learn how to kill someone without drawing attention to yourself.
A few more opportunities to kill quietly come almost immediately. Fortunately, the bad guys aren’t clever enough to panic immediately. Don’t forget to loot the bodies, then head up the ladder.
At the top of the ladder, in the tower up and to your right is a GPS doohickey, one of only two in this level. Look for a campfire to upgrade in case you need to, and you’ll unlock fast travel, which is keen! Feel free to backtrack to the Forest at this point to build up some XP, some skills, or hunt for collectibles. Oh, and check out your campfire options now, you can upgrade your bow or gun, too!
Move to the next section, and the game will advise you on how to distract guards. If you get their attention, they’ll set off a flare and call reinforcements. If you’re feeling confident, do it anyway to clear out the next chunk of guards all at once. Headshots get you extra XP!
Time to learn a new skill! Stealth killin’. It’s a pretty simple mechanic. However, in the next section, there are a number of guys gunning for you, and if you draw their attention, they’ll aggro FAST. Take them one at a time. There are five, and there’s cover, but one of them is a freakin’ psycho who starts tossing Molotovs. Go slow.
Once you hit the ground on the other side of the burning building, look for a document off to the right. If you wanna loop around to your right, there’s a relic in a building, too.
Mountain Temple
Part 4: Lone Wolf
Big fancy new area! With wolves! Look for a Buddha with a shrine thing in front of it. Light it on fire for XP. Look for nine more throughout this level for even more.
Climb on a rooftop to reach a swinging crate. On the other side, look for a relic . Head up for another swinging crate, then head out to find a way across to a ruined plane.
On the plane, keep ascending, and you’ll walk back on top of the fuselage. Jump across to keep heading up. Then head into the cave. At the end of the cave is a transmitter you need. On the way back out, expect a close encounter.
Deliver the transmitter for a new tool, a climbing axe that will help you reach new areas. Follow the directions and when you are told to look for a secret tomb , look for some white illustrations on a rock. Walk up to it, past it off the edge, and down into the hidden area under the waterfall. There’s a GPS marker at the entrance. It’s the Tomb of the Unworthy .
The Tomb is pretty easy. Jump across the hanging thing with the bundles on it, and then off the other side to light your torch. Then torch the bundles, then knock the “cage” off the edge, and use your axe to ascend. Tada!
Head back out the tunnel, and look for a rock wall you can climb up by the cave you visited earlier. Reach the top to encounter some enemies. You can draw down on them fast, or try to take them sneaky. They’ll set of a flare if you don’t put them down quickly enough.
After that, look for loot, and keep climbing with the axe all the way to the top. Then you have to find a technical doodad to send out an SOS signal. Almost immediately you’ll be spotted, and there’s no subtlety needed. Feel free to get your gun out. After that just keep going until you reach the next fire.
Radio Tower
Part 5: The Radio Tower (1/2)
Welcome to Base Approach. Look for a relic right by your fire.
Around the first corner are four guys, and a spotlight. Take them out by bow from a distance, and then avoid the light to enter the building. There are three more guys inside, at least two of which you should be able to get the drop on.
Across the way there are two more guys operating the spotlight. On their platform, all the way around, look for a GPS marker. Then head up and to the top of the tower, and take a rope into the base.
You’ll immediately here some guys talking. They’re next to a barrel, and you should feel free to shoot it and make it blow up. However, if they burn, you can’t loot them. A third guard will show.
Move on and look for an opening on the right. Go into it, and turn right to find some loot and a barrel. Light your torch at the barrel. Return to where you blew up the guys, and look for a room on the left. It has a fancy rug on the floor. Use the torch to burn the poster on the wall. Follow the crawlspaces.
Now the logic in the next bit might be a bit iffy. There is a room you have to crawl in with a valve. As soon as you open the valve the room will fill with gas and you’ll draw the attention of a bad guy. Jump up and get out of the room you just entered. Pick up a lantern, and throw it THROUGH the little opening you just came out of.
On the other side of the explosion, you’ll get a new gun. Through the next door, look for a document next to some ammo.
You’ll be glad for the new gun, as in the next section, you’re gonna have to kill a lot of people. Fast. After that, you’ll find a tunnel that leads to a control room. After a cutscene, look in the room for ammo, a document, and a banner to burn. Look for a hole in the wall with an arrow by it to continue.
Part 6: The Radio Tower (2/2)
Back outside, look for a fire to upgrade if you’ve got the loot to spend. You’ll cross a bridge, find a QT event, and then face a LOT of guards. They don’t come all at once, but many of them are elevated, so take your time. Keep an eye out for loot while you’re at it.
Climb up to a small tower and you’ll face off another handful of guards. Drop down into the courtyard, and you’ll face your first really challenging guy, kind of a mid-boss in SWAT armor. You’ll learn to dodge. Switch to the machine gun to stitch him up fast when you have an opening.
Look for a locked door in the building for a relic . There’s a document by the next campfire, too, which will allow you to fast travel if you want to backtrack for anything right now. Then, grab the rope and cross over to the tower. Then head on up.
Slide off the tower down into the courtyard. Look for a firestarter in the building, pick it up, then open the gas valve, and light that mother up! This will lead to a very extended action/dodge sequence, first sliding, and then running. When running, look for white boards as safe places to jump and land.
At the far end of your epic run and jump session, you’ll meet another bad guy with a shield, so get your dodging thumb ready! After that, a campfire and some story.
Now we’re gonna learn you a new trick, shooting with a rope arrow. This may bring some other tricks to mind for going back and revisiting areas, so keep those in mind. Take out the guys in this next section, then use the rope arrow to pull a crate free and climb up and on.
The rest of the path is very clear, just keep moving until you meet up with your mentor.
After that, you’ll want to fast travel back to the Mountain Village. Now that you have the rope arrow and the flint, climb the nose of the crashed plane and ascend a new area.
As you ascend, you’ll run into two bad guys that you can sneak up on. Then cross via another rope bridge, There’s a lot of space to explore here. Look for a nest on a ledge for another collectible. You’ll also pass another Unknown Tomb.
Tomb of the Unworthy
Part 7: I Hate Tombs
Look across the way for a blue smoke beacon. You’ll need one more rope bridge to cross over to it.
Follow the path at the top of the cliff into a cave, where you’ll find a campfire. Head through the cave to find the man you’re looking for, an amazing temple, and an ugly surprise.
You’ll start the next section in a very unpleasant location. Swing back and forth to free yourself, and get the hell out of the room.
Follow the windy path to find a shotgun, a place to use it, and a small opening to crawl into. That will take you into a very interesting location with a cutscene.
Next, you’ll face a bunch of guys who drop into the room, but you have a shotty, so it’s cool. Kill them off, collect their loot, and then use the bell to open the gate to the next bit.
You’ll find a campfire, and then have to hang your ass out over nothing to climb around the outside of the monastery. There are easier ways to do things, but Lara doesn’t seem capable of doing things the easy way.
Inside you’ll face a handful of guys, including one with a shield. By now I’d bought the upgrade where you can dodge and then stab a guy with an arrow. It’s hilarious. Clear the room, climb up, and open one shutter, swing the clapper, then switch shutters, swing it again. You’ll be attacked by a bunch of guys then, including one armored, so have the shotgun ready. Then open both shutters and swing the clapper one more time.
What do you think, another section where you run for your life like a maniac? Sure, why not. By the time you’re done, you’ll be back at the Mountain Village! How convenient. Follow the marker to exit the cave and find a fire to upgrade, etc.
Now would be the time to finish collecting stuff in the Mountain Village if you haven’t. Otherwise, we’ll go back to that Unknown Tomb we skipped earlier!
Follow the marker to encounter some bad guys, and then you’ll make a rope bridge to get back to close to where this level started. Man, this level is really, REALLY big. I chose to ascend back to where I left the tomb and rustle up some extra goodies before continuing on to help Sam.
The second optional tomb is the Hall of Ascension . When you enter, you’ll see a shutter you can close, and a platform you can raise. Go close the shutter, then run to the platform. Put your axe in place, and wait until the first shutter blows open. Then raise the platform, jump on it, and when the second shutter opens, the platform will blow to a wall you can leap to. Pow.
Head back to the bottom of the mountain area to move on with your questing. Slide down a rope, recover, and the prepare to fight three guys. Set the gas pool on fire for a laugh, if you like.
If you move to the right, you can find an elevated position that will let you get the drop on the next wave of bad guys. Otherwise, move to the left cautiously. There’s a half a dozen guys coming up, including ones with guys and fire.
After that, you’ll cross a deluge and that leads to a very frenetic dodge/slide portion. After that it’s some QT events and you’re off to the next area!
Shantytown
Part 8: Shanty (1/2)
Proceed through the village, look for a tunnel, and when you come out, there are a number of bad guys. Snipe who you can, look for barrels, and avoid damage, you’re weak. Directly across from where you exit the water is a rope trap, and you’ll wind up upside down. Avoid it.
Now you’ll be assaulted by a boat load of guys, but you have fire arrows! These do a lot more damage, so as long as you can hit a target, don’t sweat charging the shot. There are lots of barrels to hit, too. It’s a good time!
Once the fight is over, find the campfire and upgrade/regroup. Then search the area for collectibles, which should be on your map.
When you’re done exploring, head for the next marker. When you see sacks hanging, now, they’re usually the counterweight for a trap, so shoot them with fire arrows. At the marker, you’ll find the entrance to a secret tomb nearby. Roll into the sacrifice hall, take out the sack so the trap is disabled, and get ready to defend the building against a LOT of guys.
When the battle is over, use the rope arrow to pull up the hatch in the floor. You’ll eventually find a tomb, the Well of Tears . Throw jugs onto the platform to get it to the floor. Climb onto it, throw them off. Get off it, run up to the top of the ramp, jump onto the platform when it’s within reach, and then immediately jump off to the left. No sweat.
Part 9: Shanty (2/2)
Head to the next marker, which should just be to your right from the “temple”. At the door you’ll be cut off and there will be a lot of guys. If your back is to the gate, they won’t be able to flank you too much, but they will come at you from more than one direction. Now’s a great time to rack up some good combat stats. Once you’re done, follow the directions to open the gate.
Once inside, proceed through the pool and on the other side, you’ll catch up with an old shipmate. That won’t work out quite as expected, and then you’ll be isolated and coming under a LOT of fire. Be prepared. The fire arrows work really well here, just keep firing and moving.
Head on up the tower, either by rope or by ascending ramps. There will be a lot of guys around the windmill, and a camp on the far side, as well as another hidden tomb. The entrance talks some walking, but once you’re there, it’s the Chamber of Judgement . Once in the tomb, throw yourself and jugs at the shelves to get the jugs all on the floor. Then put them all on the elevated end of see-saw in the middle of the room. Once it’s tilted, you can jump to the climbing wall and get to the ladder.
Hop on the moving crate, and you’ll note all the ammo waiting for you on the other side. There’s another heated battle. A lot of guys will come at you over the ropes, and if you’re a fast shooter, you can earn an achievement for dropping them. There will be a lot of fire bombs, so keep dodging.
Grab one of the ropes to cross to where all the guys were, ascend a level, and then look for another rope to continuing crossing. After a brief conversation, you’ll reach another campfire.
You will now start an extended section where you must cross the bridge by hanging and climbing, while your buddy covers you. Wait until he tells you to go, go early and you’ll get shot and fall. Be patient, otherwise it’s not too rough. After that, there’s a lot of running and screaming and jumping.
Now it’s time to head into the cave, where you will get an up-close view of exactly WHAT the hell is going on in this place. And it ain’t pretty.

Caves and Fortress
Part 10: Fire Ritual
I swear to god there’s more corpses and bits of corpses on this island than there have been people, ever. Move forward, grab some arrows, and use a fire arrow to clear the gas vent in front of you. It won’t be clear for long, so get ready to hustle.
Past the gas vent is a campfire and a document . If you don’t have axe fighting skills and you have some points, now would be the time to get them, you don’t have much ammo, and you can assume you’re gonna run into something creepy down here. Moving on, you’ll get a taste of just how ghastly this place is. Yeesh. Head down into the main cave and explore, your map will show you some goodies. Stock up on some salvage while you’re at it.
When you’re ready to leave, go interact with the gas pipe by the door, and then shoot it with fire. Instant exit! In the next area, a patrol will come your way. With a silent arrow, shoot the furthest guy first, which will let you get the drop on them. Remember, headshots and stealth kills give you more XP. If you don’t draw any attention, you’ll be able to sneak up on a fourth guard, a firebomber.
Climb up above where the guards were for another vent to blow up to open the path, and look above you further for a campfire and a relic .
Once you use the cage to get over the gate, look for a gas vent that you can use to drop three guys at once. Good for a laugh. And you may need it by now.
Ascend the climbing wall to the next section, which is a shrine to the goddess. Stealth kill the first guy you see, then kill the guy all the way to the right, up the stairs. Then put a fire arrow into the gas vent!
There’s a relic behind the shrine to the left. On the next level, use the rope arrow to pull the big pyre toward you. Then blow up the gas vent to bash the door open.
After that, you’ll do some running, some frantic sliding, and then you’ll have to run fast through a gas-filled tunnel.
When you get out of the tunnel, there are four guys. If you’re fast and sneaky, you can hit all four of them before they react too much. Otherwise, you’ll come under fire. Either way, when they’re done, the story moves on.
Blow up the vent beneath the cage, then climb up and jump on top of the platform, then over to the cage. From the top, shoot one vent and then another to move the big pyre to where you need it. Climb all over, jump off the platform, activate the two vents, and then get where you can shoot both of them at once.
Why do they always insist on building lairs on top of unstable areas? There’s no loot and no treasure to hunt here, but there’s some fun exposition along the way. Just keep moving. There’s only one guy who shoots at you that you absolutely have to shoot, other than that, feel free to ignore them.
After an extended cutscene, you’ll be in a very rough fight. Your cover can be shot away, so use your best gun, keep moving, and don’t get hit. Once you’ve taken out about six or seven guys, then there are two final guys, both heavily armored. Switch to the shotgun for them if you can. If you get a chance for a finishing blow, take it, it’ll put them down faster.
After that, there’s only a few more guys to kill as you exit, including one with a shield. After that, you’ll need to follow cover until you’re right in front of the heavy gun. Look to your left for a niche, and then a small platform you can hop up to. Look for a climbing wall, and then jump onto a rope. You’ll earn a very badass weapon accessory. After that, you’ll face another wave of guys, including several at an elevated position. After that, look for a campfire. The next section is BRUTAL with guys, so if you don’t have a weapon specialty, now would be the time.
There are a lot of guys here. They don’t swamp you, but they keep coming and coming, they’re well armed, some are armored, and visibility SUCKS. Use the survival vision to keep track of them, snipe with arrows or a zoomed in pistol wherever you can, use the grenades when optimal. It’s mostly a matter of patience and ammo, not tactics.
Next section, it’s a heavy machine gun and not enough cover. Stick to the left, climb the wall, and there’s a rope you can slide on. However, if you take fire, you’ll fall off. So take out the guys waiting for you and wait for a break in the heavy gunfire before you jump. Once you’re on the other side, you’ll have an opportunity to use your grenade launcher to take the bastard out.
After that, it’s briefly back to Shantytown for a lot of running, jumping and climbing, while the world burns. As ever, watch for the white bits that are safe to land on/catch, and remember you need to hit the button to slap your axe into surfaces, you don’t do it by default.

Some Time Alone
Part 13: Some Time Alone
Head for the fire and do your thing. Look around in the first section, and then keep moving. You’ll run into three guys, easy enough to drop them quietly. A number of guards are on the other side of the water, but they’re easy enough to take one or two at a time. After that you’ll see a campfire, which is the first fast travel you can use in ages. Go back now if you like.
From the campfire, look about 90 degrees to the left of the hut next to it. There’s a tomb there. It’s the Stormguard Sanctum . Use your fire arrow to blow up the pile of stuff on the first ledge. Then activate the gas to clear it, get up on the platform, then head up to the next level. There’s another pile of stuff to blow up across the way, then jump over there. That was pretty easy!
From the entrance of the tomb, hug the edge of the map to your left, and when you reach another hut, you’re about to face a bunch of enemies. Ahead of you is a cave opening guarded by three guys. One well-placed grenade will take them out with great satisfaction.
In the cave, you’ll see why it’s called a wolf cave! Climb the platform to your left, and shoot the carcass with a rope arrow. That’ll rotate a bar for you to swing off. Jump to the climbing wall across the way, deploying the axe when you get there.
When you reach a ledge, follow it to your left. Post-bats, hang a right to leave the cave. And where are you then? Shantytown again!
Roll down a few rope bridges to the tower with the platforms cycling past it. Hitch a lift on one of them. It’ll run out of gas after a conversation, and you’ll have to rope bridge off of it.
On the far side of this platform, look for a ladder up, that’ll take you to a rope bridge to the boat in the sky. On that boat, you’ll kill a LOT of dudes, so be prepared. One of the final ones will have a sword, but he’s easy enough if you know he’s on his way.
Once the frame collapses, move FAST. Follow the yellow steps as quickly as you can to stay ahead of the shooting. After that, one jump and you’re on the ropes. After only one warning of how this QT nonsense works, you’re on your own to time the button to drop from one rope to the next. When everything slows down, it’s time to let go.

Shipwreck Beach
Part 14: Shipwreck Beach
Lovely new area. Take a look around. There’s a hidden tomb you can’t open yet, until you have a new piece of gear. Look for salvage, the caches that are this level’s collectible, the GPS thignees, etc, before you head over to the marker.
After you get your mission, head across the bay on the dock bridge, climb up the rigging, then move to the galleon. Inside, you can get the drop on some bad guys. Head up to the top of the ship and shoot an arrow at the anchor to get your quest item. Three more guys will be between you and the rope slide to turn your stuff in.
After you get an upgraded bow, follow the path, do some jumping, and you’ll wind up taking a much more precarious trail out across the bay. Look for the white points to jump to, expect a couple of dudes, and you won’t be surprised.
The next secret tomb will be directly on your way. It’s in a bunker to your left, marked with drawings. If you only go for one of these in the game, make it this one. There’s a relic and all sorts of goodies on the way. This is The Flooded Vault . Head in, hit the power switch up top, then the one downstairs to open the doors. Look at the raft on the left, and shoot the bound-up bundle wrapped in white cloth with fire. Then head to the opening on the right, blow out the shotgun wall, and bring the raft to you via the rope arrow. Use the raft to jump around to the next section. From there, pull the thing in the ceiling down with a rope arrow. The second you do, cross the water to the other section before the power comes back on. Draw the raft next to the battery in the water. Then raise it, pull the raft under it, and travel safely in the water. Head upstairs and then exit with your prize.
After the tomb, the path to continue is pretty straightforward, jump to a mast, crawl through a tunnel… Grapple and cross over to the bunker and then enter it. You’ll face a coterie of guys. Snipe as many as you can, prepare for an aggressive swordsman, and you’ll be fine.
As you move on, you’ll grapple up a small tower, and fight off a small flight of guys. No problem. As you come out into the daylight, with the setting sun before you. Head off the ledge, shoot a rope across, and then move along to the Endurance.
Once you hit the deck, there’ll be a couple of guys, but your main issue will be the giant armored dude. Hit him with bullets while you can, but mostly you’ll wanna dodge and stab. He’ll give you a new piece of equipment that’ll come in handy immediately.
In the next section, you need to combine jumping on the hook set in the roof with hauling it around by rope shot to get it under the hole in the roof. Pull it toward Alex, then move it to the right. Then move it back toward where you started, then slide it to the left, under the hole.
Then, move the hook back toward where you started, then move it to the right to line it up with Alex. Then pull it toward him. Then pull it away from him.
Back on land, pull the block off the ledge with your new widget. On the way back, look for another rope to ascend to backtrack. At the top will be three guards. Take them out, then take the rope down to base.
Now that you have the rope pulley, you can open the door to the tomb on the beach. This tomb is the Temple of the Handmaidens . Raise the platform with the crank and watch the buoy float. Run up to the upper level, and grab the pole and swing across when the buoy moves it. Shoot the rope point on the next tower to pull it in front of the buoy so you can jump across to that pole and then across to the climbing wall.
When you’re ready to move on, go to the elevator, climb up the shaft, and then shoot a rope arrow across to the climbing wall on the tower. Then, find a concrete post, use it to jump to the water tower, and then jump off that to the ladder to get all the way to the top.
Pull one gondola to you with the rope, jump on it. Pull the second one to you, and get ready to jump onto it and then immediately off again. Move on, look for a rail that will take you up to a climbing wall and continue your ascent.
On the next platform you’ll face two guys, then two more. Once they’re out of the way, you’ll hop up, and then use a rope bridge to continue. Across the way, you’ll make a faith jump, and then use the pulley to open another door.

Part 16: Bearer of Bad News
Fall down into the hollow and look for a GPS thingee right away. Follow the path, ascend a climbing wall, kill two dudes, and you get a campfire.
When you reach the elevator, push the buttons, then climb on the stack to your right and use the axe on the cog. Then, climb through the elevator to the other side. Climb up to level three, hit the button, then backtrack to find a hatch to break the second cog. Bring the elevator up to level four, the go back to three and look for a ladder that leads to a hatch. Climb up that ladder to reach the third cog. Finally, drop the elevator back down to three. From level four, hit the switch again, then drop into the elevator. Jump out of the hole in the shaft to a climbing wall. That’ll lead you to the fourth cog.
After you drop the elevator, go to the bottom and expect conflict. Then follow the trail to a finding that is both educational and bad ass. Next comes a wave of bad guys but by now you know how to find cover, how to snipe, and how to kick ass. No problem.
Hop up onto the balcony, and follow it to a slide that leads to a climbing wall. When you emerge, you’ll get a call for help. On the outside, there are two guys. Drop them, but don’t go all the way to them, look for a rope on the left. Take that up to the tower, then take another rope down to the beach.

Now it’s time to get your boat on the road. As it were. Welcome back to the Mountain Pass.
A rope bridge gets you into the base. Wait until the samurais pass, then burn out the blockade. Then stalk, climb, run, and slide.
After that, you’ll fight some samurai. They’re fast, but a well-timed dodge works wonders. Otherwise, shoot out their legs and then finish them off. Exit this area, and you’re back where the wind is well…windy. It’s never a good sign when they offer you THIS much ammo, is it?
Out in the open, the first wave of attackers will all be samurai, and they can scramble. Aim for the legs, and keep moving. There’s only about five of them. The next wave is heavier, including guys with shields. You can dodge them, or aim at the feet or heads. Climbing up gives you an advantage, but makes you more vulnerable to arrows. Those pear-looking things are explosive, and you can kick them off the ledges. They’re handy. Actually, if you let the bridge bottleneck them, you can take them out with a couple of grenades, for that matter. After you clear out the next wave, head over the new bridge.
On the other side of the bridge you’ll face a couple of armored guys, and some bowmen. When you turn a corner, get ready to shoot at explosives in the air. If you time it right, you’ll save a lot of fighting. Then there is a very heavy wave. There’s no best way to do this fight, but scrambling will always keep you alive a bit longer. Keep looking for ammo, and keep dodging.
Inside the building, look for a relic , a document , and a campfire. In the next room, look for more collectibles, too. Use the crank on the right of the room to open the hole in the floor. Use the crank on the left to raise a cage from the hole. I closed the trap door afterwards, just in case. Retreat to where you started in the room, swing the cage with a rope to bust the cracked wall open. Then drop the cage to the floor and repeat the process from the top level, so you can drop onto the cage and reach the opening to climb through.
At the end of the last winding corridor, there is the final campsite you’ll get, so use it to fast travel for supplies, etc. Otherwise, you can finish collecting after you finish the game. Upgrade any weapons you can, now’s your last chance. There’s a relic right by the fire as well.
Welcome to Thunderdome. Head to the left. Do some roping and some climbing. When you reach a blocked gate, pull the bell in front of it and let the wind do the rest. Keep heading up and use a bell to make a rope bridge. There’s a lot of jumping and climbing ahead, and using your axe. So long as you don’t forget you need to push a button to grab a climbing wall with the axe, you’ll be fine. Enjoy the views!
Getting to rescue Sam is not easy, but it’s not too hard either. There are waves of bad guys, including ones with shields and explosives, and they’re broken up with weather events. Not too tough, just keep moving.
The bigass samurai requires three phases. For the second two he has cronies who will come and attack you as well. The easiest time to hit him is after he does a big overhead swing, but he’s vulnerable every time after he attacks, usually in the flanks. After each round you’ll have to jump on him and do a QT attack. After the second one, his helmet is off, so feel free to aim at the head. Grab loot when you’re done.
After the samurai, you’ll face Matthias, which is a series of QT events. No problem by now.
