Assassin’s Creed Unity Wiki – Everything you need to know about the game .

Assassin’s Creed Unity is an upcoming and highly anticipated third person action adventure video game that is currently in development at Ubisoft Montreal, developers of Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag and Far Cry 3. The game is also set to be published by Ubisoft Montreal’s parent company, Ubisoft.

Running on the AnvilNEXT engine that was developed by Ubisoft Montreal, Assassin’s Creed Unity is set to be the seventh game in the main series of Ubisoft’s popular alternate history driven franchise and will be set against a backdrop focused on the the French Revolution (a political and social revolution that took place from 1789 to 1799).

The game is expected to launch in North America on October 28th of 2014 on current generation consoles (excluding the Wii U), Assassin’s Creed Unity will be available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Windows at retail and via digital download through the respective online services.

Development

The development of Assassin’s Creed Unity was first made public on March 19th of 2014 when a series of images leaked containing imagery depicting a setting somewhere in France (confirmed by architecture and photographic evidence) and a man named Arno/Arnoud who was clearly affiliated with the Assassins. The images also contained information concerning the setting of the game, confirming some speculation that the game was going to be set during the French Revolution of 1789 – 1799, alongside some new navigation mechanics aptly named parkour up and parkour down.

Following these leaks, Ubisoft confirmed that the leaked images were indeed pictures of Assassin’s Creed Unity, they followed up on this by showing some pre-alpha development footage of the game to back the announcement. The announcement was followed by a confirmation of the Q4 2014 release date and confirmed that the game would indeed be seeing a release on Microsoft Windows, most likely through the Uplay service offered by Ubisoft.

Despite the images using the term parkour, the movement in the Assassins Creed games has more in common with “le art du deplacement” or “the art of movement/displacement” which is much more focused on fluidity of movement through an environment, this is what gives the Assassins their iconic vaulting, dodging and climbing abilities.

It was confirmed that the development cycle for Assassin’s Creed Unity began soon after the completion of Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood which arrived in 2010, meaning that thus far, Assassin’s Creed Unity has been in development for 4 years. The development is being led by Ubisoft Montreal but the dev team is being supported by other Ubisoft studios that are situated in Toronto, Kiev, Singapore, Shanghai, Annecy, Montpellier, Bucharest, Quebec and Chengdu.

That brings the total of active development parties to 10; Ubisoft has a total of 26 operational studios spread across the world and employs over 8000 developers. Ubisoft Ceo Yves Guillemot has said that this amount of creative minds allows them to, “allow us to come with an enhanced pipeline of increasingly high quality franchises and new IPs. We will be able to release our franchises more and more regularly, providing solid visibility on our future revenue and profitability streams.”

The new power offered to developers with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 has allowed for an increase in on screen NPC’s with crowds that number up to 1000 individual characters controlled by an AI that results in characters acting individually and without the previous crowd mentality, they will also dynamically react to the players actions individually lending some unpredictability and a sense of realism to the game.

However, this coupled with the partnership between Ubisoft and Nvidia has drawn ire from PC players that have rigs that are primarily made with AMD components that have a documented history of poor experiences with PC ports of the Assassins Creed franchise. Assassin’s Creed Unity will make use of the TXAA anti-aliasing, advanced DX11 tessellation and Nvidia PhysX technology available to Nvidia users.

Nvidia vice president of Content and Technology says, “We’re excited to continue our long-term partnership with Ubisoft in bringing our latest PC technology to their games”, “Through GameWorks, we have been able to add unique visual and gameplay innovations to deliver amazing experiences for these stellar Ubisoft games, I can’t wait to play them myself.”

Story

The story of Assassin’s Creed Unity will take place during the eve of the French revolution, a bloody, cruel period and historical moment of great importance to the French people. The plot follows Arno Dorian, a Frenchman who crosses paths with the Assassins who slowly induct him into their order where he will climb the ranks of command. Arno is on a quest that consists of equal parts redemption and uncovering the true forces behind the revolution.

Gameplay

assassin's creed unity

The core of the Assassins Creed games remains intact in Assassin’s Creed Unity but there are a number of new additions that introduce some changes that directly impact the games gameplay. One of which is the idea of building combat around fencing (fencing originated in Spain, but was later surpassed by the French and Italians) which allows for much swifter parries and ripostes, thus making combat a much more fluid thing.

The new parkour-esque movements, aptly named “up” and “down”, give Arno an improved means of scaling buildings and obstacles which in turn makes it easier for the player to navigate the intricate architecture of France. Unlike older Assassin’s Creed games, Arno can purchase new skills through the new skill trees, he will also learn new moves as the game progresses. Dynamically generated side missions will also develop naturally in the crowds, ranging from fights to robberies.

The newest and most talked about feature in Assassin’s Creed Unity is the introduction of Cooperative Multiplayer that allows players to team up and band together as they continue through missions and activities in the game world. Despite this, there are set portions of the game that are specifically reserved for the single player game.

Characters

The player takes control of Arno, a man on a quest for redemption who encounters the Assassins brotherhood and is initiated in to their ranks. Born in Versailles, Arno is a Frenchman who just so happens to join the Brotherhood around the same time the French Revolution kicks off in earnest.
