The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Alchemy Guide: Ingredients

As you may have already noticed by checking out our many Skyrim guides you have the freedom to do pretty much anything in the game: you can customize your character any way you want, create and improve many different equipment pieces and more. You are what you want in Skyrim and this is what makes this game so engaging.

Among the available perks are the Alchemy perks, which improve your skills when creating different potions. Alchemy is actually quite important in the game, since all the potions that can be created have a lot of different effects which may give you quite an advantage during the game. Creating potions and items through alchemy also has a nice side effect: you can sell these potions for some good extra money. Considering that all the materials you may require to create these potions can be harvested for free, you may be in for some good profits. Also, the potion’s value doesn’t depend on its effects, meaning that you may be able to get quite a lot of money from some useless potions.

Alchemy works differently in Skyrim than in Oblivion: to discover an ingredient effect you will have to consume it first. Once you know the effects of a few ingredients you can head over to the Alchemy tab and start creating potions. To create a potion you only need two ingredients but you will also be able to add a third: adding the third ingredient will help you discovering the extra properties of the ingredients.

The only thing we can add to all this is: experiment. Only by experimenting you will be able to find some excellent combinations and create some powerful potions.

In the next parts of the Skyrim Alchemy Guide we will be taking a good look at all the ingredients found in the game as well as on all the possible potions that can be created: we’ll also include some basic recipes for each one of the to get you started. After better understanding how Alchemy works you’ll probably be able to discover all the potions by yourself: however if you really don’t want to waste so much time on it you’ll simply have to keep checking out these guides!
