The Broken Straight Sword, one of the opening game items in Dark Souls 2, is basically a terrible weapon. Unsurprising considering that, as the name suggests, it’s a broken sword. Generally speaking, it’s a throwaway item that you will likely only use while you absolutely have to, i.e., up until the precise moment you find any other weapon at all in the game.
The Broken Straight Sword can, by some accounts, be one of, if not the best weapon for PvP in Dark Souls 2. At this point, you may think that I’ve gone insane, thinking that there’s no way that a Broken Straight Sword will ever stand up to another player’s greatsword and greatshield combo. Well, you’re half right.
Bear in mind that this tip works best if you have a reasonably well-buffed Endurance stat on your character as this maximises your stamina, which is extremely important in combat in Dark Souls games. Now, if you have some souls to spare, whip out your Broken Straight Sword and upgrade it as much as you can.
Why the Broken Straight Sword is actually a good weapon in Dark Souls 2
Now that you think I’ve gone completely over the edge, I don’t mind revealing to you that the key advantage of the Broken Straight Sword is that it costs you next to no Stamina to swing it. This is where it really begins to shine against those annoying PvP opponents who stat there with their shield raised, waiting for you to make the first mistake so that they can punish you with a swing of their unnecessarily brutish weapon.
As well as costing you minimal amounts of stamina to swing, your character will also step considerably further forwards while swinging the Broken Straight Sword at an enemy than a more traditional weapon. You can essentially keep on mashing RB/R1 while your opponent, bemused, stands with their shield raised and their stamina bar inexorably depleting from your incessant onslaught. To irritate them even further, you can also enchant it with poison to take off chunks of health, or bleed to half health and stamina recovery while also reducing the opponent’s mobility by causing them to slow walk when they aren’t dodging.
And that, dear friends, is why you shouldn't dismiss the Broken Straight Sword as entirely useless, although we don't recomment that you try using it in PvE (especially against larger enemies), or more skilled players in PvP.
