Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Hints, tips and Cheats guide
With the release of super smash bros for Nintendo 3ds and Wii U aka Super smash bros 4 (ssb4), there has been a massive increase in people having their eyes glued to 3ds screens, only occasionally lifting them from the screen to ensure the world hasn’t ended. The fact of the matter is that one of the main features of Super Smash bros. is the sheer amount of unlockables to be found in the game. We’ve come a long way from the days of battling for 20 straight hours in Vs. Mode to unlock Mewtwo in Super smash bros. Melee (Totally worth it) or 700 individual Vs. mode matches but now we have a whole new roster, with new characters to collect in crazy but hopefully not so time consuming ways.
There are lots of different kinds of unlockacles in super smash bros. for Wii U and 3DS including Characters, Stages, trophies and various alternate methods to unlock them all. In this article we will attempt to break this all down into easy to digest sections that should help you to unlock anything you want fast!

- Bonus Effects – You can equip multiple pieces of equipment with the same bonus effect to make that effect stronger.
- Breaking Your Fall – When you hit the wall, floor, or ceiling after being launched, press the shield button to break your fall and avoid follow-up attacks.
- Catching Items – You can catch items thrown at you by pressing the attack button at just the right time.
- Clinging to Walls – Some fighters can temporarily stick to walls if you keep holding in the direction of the wall. Not every wall is good for this move, though...
- Crouch Walking – Some fighters can move while crouched if you input diagonally down to the left or right.
- Custom Special Moves – Each of the custom special moves have different attributes. Choose carefully to create the perfect fighter for your play style!
- Easy Final Smash – Fighters who are really lagging behind will sometimes be ready to use a Final Smash as soon as they return from being KO'd.
- Eating While Prone – Press the attack button while you're prone to eat a food item that's fallen nearby.
- Equipment – Fighters can carry up to three pieces of equipment. Carrying different equipment can really change the way you play a fighter!
- Footstool Jump – You can jump on an opponent's head and use them as a springboard. If they're airborne, they'll fall down, too.
- Grab – You have to wait at least a second between letting go of an opponent and grabbing them again, so be patient!
- Grab an Item While Airborne – You can grab an item in midair by dodging or attacking at just the right time.
- Grabbing Edges – If you grab an edge that someone else is grabbing, you'll steal it from them. So much for first come, first served!
- Hitstun Shuffling – Input in a direction while taking damage, and you'll shift slightly in that direction.
- Interacting with Equipment – Using equipment that raises attack will lower defense at the same time. You know what they say—the best defense is a good offense!
- Letting Go of Items – Press the grab button to drop the item you're holding. Even an item dropped like this deals a small amount of damage.
- Low Jump – Press the jump button very briefly and you'll jump lower than usual, letting you use air attacks against ground-level foes.
- Magnifying-Glass Damage – When you move off-screen, you'll be shown in a little circle. You'll gradually take damage while off the screen, so don't linger!
- Meteor Smash – Launching an opponent straight downward is known as a Meteor Smash. Doing this when there isn't a platform below is a good one-hit KO method.
- Mii Fighters' Physiques – The physique of the Mii your Mii Fighter was based on will affect it! A big Mii is stronger, while a smaller Mii is faster.
- Perfect Shield – Shielding right before an attack results in a perfect shield. You'll be able to strike back immediately after guarding.
- Shield Break – While your shield is up, it'll gradually get smaller. When it finally breaks, you'll become dizzy.
- Shieldstun Shuffling – Angling to one side or the other while blocking with your shield will move it very slightly in that direction.
- Shifting Your Shield – You can gently input a direction while shielding to move your shield. This lets you block effectively, even with a small shield.
- Smash Throw – When you throw an item, quickly press in the same direction as your throw. You'll throw it farther than usual that way.
- Stale Moves – Using the same attack constantly will decrease its power. Add a little variety to your fighting, and spice up your game!
- Strong Equipment – Taking on higher intensity levels in Classic mode or achieving high scores in minigames can hugely affect the power of the equipment you pick up.
- Super Armor – This is a state where you won't flinch even while taking damage. Some specials will trigger this.
- Throwing Items – Drop items by pressing the grab button. Input a direction when you drop an item to throw the item in that direction.
- Turning and Grabbing – If you turn around while running and then grab, your grabbing range will be longer than usual.
- Types of Equipment – Equipment can affect either attack, defense, or speed. You can equip more than one piece of the same type.
- Wall Jumping – Some fighters can jump off walls. Input in the opposite direction while touching the wall to do this.
OTHER
- Some fighters can move while crouched
- Using the same attack constantly will decrease its power. Use variety!
- You can grab an item in midair by dodging or attacking at the right moment.
- You can jump on an opponents head to use a springboard. If they are airborne they will fall down and hit the ground.
- You can break your fall when hitting the wall, floor, ceiling after being launched by hitting the shield button.
- Equip multiple pieces of equipment with the same bonus effect to make the effect stronger.
- Lightly tap the jump button to do a low jump, letting you use air attacks on ground level foes.
- If you are lagging behind in the match, you can sometimes spawn with a Final Smash ready to use.
- If you turn around while running and grab, your grab range will be longer.
SMASH RUN
- Arms Stat boosts increase throwing moves and attacks using items, as well as healing items. Arms also increases your grabbing range and make you less likely to drop items when hit.
- Special Stat boosts won’t just deal more damage, they’ll also take less time to charge and have an extended range.
- Just by running and attacking, you can slowly build your speed and attack stats
- Slower fighters can carry more powers. Putting on equipment that affects speed will affect this too.
- Get higher level equipment by playing Classic Mode on higher intensity levels.
- The Defeat Them All Challenge in Smash Run will task you to defeat all enemies on screen before time runs out. If you fall off the narrow platforms into the fiery tiles below, the challenge will end.
- Rare Trophies/ Custom Specials and other items appear more by defeating bonus enemies and opening chests.
- Fest events in Smash run will litter the arena with a particular type of enemy. The name of the fest will clue you in on which enemy to expect.
- The Bronto Burt fly around the try to hit you with their spin attack. They don’t do much damage but have high launching power.
- A Redead can stun you with their screech, but only if you are on the ground.
- The Plasma Wisp will fully charge their attack. At stage three, they will be immune to projectiles and direct attacks.
- Zuree are ghosts with big claws. You’ll have to wait until they take physical form to attack before attacking back.
- Cryogonal floats around and will fire ice beams at you. If caught you’ll be frozen for a short period.
- The Reapettes can pass through walls and will disappear in one hit, so aim carefully.
- Banzai Bill is a huge version of Bullet Bill with really high HP. They will explode if stuck on terrain.
- The Nutski will either fire a burst of weak seeds or a single big seed that deals more damage.
- A Geemerwill crawl over most any terrain, and their spikes can hurt a lot.
- Poppant will run away if you get close or attack them, but they can also throw stones and bob-ombs at you.
- An Octorok will hide in the grass when you get close. Use a grab to pull them out of hiding.
- If a Clubberskull is on a rampage, he can chase players over walls and other obstacles.
- If you are close to a Devil Car when its stops moving, it will spout paralyzing exhaust fumes,
CHARACTERS
- Olimar always plucks Pikmin in the order of red, yellow, blue, white, purple
- Olimar will always attack with the Pikmin at the front of the line, look for the arrow to see which one is next.
- Many of Lucario’s attacks grow stronger with increased damage. Force Palm deals more damage and has a greater range.
- Marth’s dancing blade can be turned into four hit combos. holding different directions will change the angle of the strike. Holding forward has the best launching power.
- Mega Man’s side smash increases in size and distance the longer you charge it
- Mega Man’s Metal Blade can get stuck on walls and floors and can be used by others.
- Mega Man’s Crash Bomber will latch on to most anything - fighters included. It can be passed to another fighter by bumping into them.
- You can grab someone with Mega Man’s Leaf Shield active to do even more damage to them.
- Using Rush Coil with Mega Man can give you a boost, but others can use him as well.
- Donkey Kong’s Up B won’t lift you high, but has a great horizontal distance
- Yoshi’s Egg Roll does more damage the longer you move along the ground.
- Yoshi’s Bomb does more damage when launched from the ground.
- Pac-Man’s Oranges don’t deal much damage, but they fly straight and at high speeds.
- Pac-Man’s Strawberry flies a little farther than other fruit and bounces twice when it lands.
- The tornadoes created by Meta Knight’s Mach Tornado can destroy weak projectiles.
- Shulk’s Smash Mode in Monado Arts can launch opponents higher, but deals less damage and makes him susceptible to being launch.
- Your Mii Fighter’s physique will affect the strength and speed depending how you made your Mii’s bigger or smaller.
- Palutena’s Lightweight move lets her move faster and farther, but makes her easier to damage.
- Once you’ve grown a tree with the Villager’s special move, you can use the axe for cutting other fighters, not just the tree - as long as its still standing.
- The Villager’s Lloid Rocket does more damage when he’s riding on it, but you can bail at any time by pressing B.
- Link’s bombs won’t damage him if they are exploding on an enemy.
- Diddy Kong’s Monkey Flip will release a fighter quicker in the air than on the ground.
ASSIST TROPHIES
- If Chain Chomp fall off the stage he will jump straight back up!
- Saki Amamiya will shoot or slash with his weapon, depending on the range of the target.
- When Nightmare has changed from his power orb to true form, the screen will go black.
- Elec Man will dash around the stage firing his Thunder Beam. A hit from the attack will leave a fighter stunned.
- Midna’s hair grab has a long range, and goes right through shields.
- Skull Kid has a variety of powers he can use in battle, except the person who summoned him won’t be immune to them.
POKEMON
- Entei has a gravitational pull with his fire spin. Once trapped, you’ll take huge damage.
- Spewpa will only hit you with stun spore if you hit him first.
- Giratina launches a massive gust of wind that hits multiple times, and can even send you off the screen.
- Snorlax grows as it rises into the air, catch all the fighters in one hit!
- When hit by Bellossom’s sleep attack, the more damage you’ve taken, the longer you’ll sleep.
- Darkrai’s Dark Void move will pull people towards it, and anyone who touches it will fall to sleep, even bringing people down from the air.
- Before Electrode explodes, his body goes red and shrinks. You can grab it at this point and throw it at enemies.
- While Inkay’s Topsy-Turvy move will knock over nearby fighters, those in the air won’t be affected.
- You can ride on a Gogoat to charge down opponents on its back.
- Snivy’s Razor Leaf may have a short distance, but anyone caught will have trouble escaping.
- Dedenne’s Discharge attack creates a large electrical field that will damage enemies with multiple hits who are caught in the radius.
- Genesect’s laser can pierce walls, so it’s better to stay out of the line of sight.
ITEMS
- Attack an incoming Beetle and it will do a U turn back at the person who threw it.
- You can use the Fire Bar at both short and long range, the base of the weapon does the most damage.
MULTI-MAN SMASH
- Items will occasionally float by on small platforms - they will be the same items that appear at the same time in every battle.
