The Playable Characters in Batman: Arkham Knight

In the newest Batman game you can play as no less than 8 different characters! Each has their own unique characteristics, backstory and some even have their own missions. Most of them you’ll be able to switch with Batman at any time if you fancy a change up using the new dual play system. So let’s find out and get the lowdown on who’s playable in Rocksteady’s final game in the Arkham trilogy!

Batman

What a surprise! Ok Ok, this one is a little obvious, but in case for some reason you were wondering, yes you can play as Batman in the new Batman game. The winged hero returns with a lot of the same moves, skills, and gadgets from the older Arkham games, but with some new tricks – including the trusty transforming tank Batmobile. In this outing the whole of Gotham city has been shut down by the enigmatic Arkham Knight, and it’s up to you to find and stop the villain, who looks suspiciously similar to Brucey.

Robin

Probably equally unsurprising is the fact that you can play as Robin in the new Arkham game. Batman’s caped comrade has been around for ages, this Robin is the third incarnation, and he’s received a new look for Arkham Knight. The events of the new game take place a year after Arkham City, and to reflect the fact that the whole of Gotham is now under the control of evildoers, Robin’s armour has been beefed up a bit with more sturdy-looking bracers, torso armour and leggings.

Nightwing

Dick Grayson used to be Robin, but basically he decided after spending so long under Batman’s wing (heh heh) it was time to move on and go it alone. He still helps batman out as Nightwing, and although he’s now firmly his own hero and not just Batman’s sidekick, he definitely still has a strong whiff off Batman to him, a lot of his moves and his outfit are definitely inspired by the bat. In the new Arkham Knight he is playable with his signature Escrima sticks, which allow him to channel strong currents of electricity straight into his foes.

Batgirl

Now known as Oracle, Barbara Gordon is the daughter of commissioner Gordon, and helps Batman with her extensive hacking skills. But before she was Oracle, she was Batgirl, fighting crime side by side with Batman himself. This all came to an end though when Joker shot her in the spine, paralysing her and leaving her wheelchair-bound. But it’s been revealed that in Arkham Knight players will be able to pick up a DLC that will allow you to go back in time to play as the Batgirl in the mission “A Matter of Family”.

Catwoman

Another Stalwart of the franchise, and of Arkham games in general, Catwoman’s back in Arkham Knight. She looks a little different too, with scars that might be due to the fact that her apartment was blown up in the Arkham City. Once again you can play Catwoman and choose whether to pilfer with impunity or whether to occasionally help Batman. She’ll also feature in the DLC “Gotham City Stories”!

Azrael

The prophetic holy warrior returns in Arkham Knight. He pretty much predicted the events of the Arkham City and Arkham Knight, so he’s probably just back to say “I told you so”. Azrael used to be a criminal until he was turned into a holy crusader by the cryptic order of Dumas, who seem to inform Azrael about the future happenings of Gotham. Because Azrael has seen that his prophetic statements have come true, in Arkham Knight he now seeks to take the role of Gotham’s protector from Batman using his flaming sword.

Harley Quinn

Yeah that’s right, after the [SPOILER ALERT] Joker died at the end of Arkham City, just after Harley Quinn found out she was pregnant, she went even more off the rails than usual. She’ll be available to anyone who pre-orders the game, with several missions in the challenge mode that you can complete as her. These include Harley smashing up the police station in Nightwing’s haunt Bludhaven to rescue her partner in crime Poison Ivy, as a prequel to the events of Arkham Knight. She’s got a whole new box of tricks as well, including Harley-only special moves like “Jack-in-the-box” and “Snare Trap”.

Red Hood

Jason Todd makes his debut in the Arkham universe as Red Hood, the ying to Batman’s yang. Just like Batman Red Hood fights crime, but Red Hood isn’t afraid of killing badguys. He’ll resort to murder, torture and generally will fight fire with fire when it comes to the wicked denizens of Gotham. He was originally the second Robin, but was killed by Joker and then resurrected in the Lazarus Pits to fight once more and generally make Batman feel guilty as Red Hood. We’re not 100% sure what Red Hood will look like in Arkham Knight yet, but if the appearance of his toy is anything to go off then the answer is cool. Again Red Hood will be available to play in several DLC missions.
