Galak-Z throws players into the pilot uniform of A-Tak, a rookie fighter pilot who has found himself in a world of trouble after being ambushed by enemy forces. Now you must carry out missions all by your lonesome and make it back to base in one piece. Galak-Z offers players some really great maneuverability, but it takes a bit of getting used to. Jumping right into a dog-fight is a good way to get yourself killed and sent back to the beginning of whatever season you happen to be playing.
Each area of the game is completely open for you to fly around at your leisure. Use this to your advantage to practice flying around. Practice doing quick turns, breaking, boosting, and juking. Once comfortable, seek out a lone drone and practice the same moves within a fight situation. The sooner you get the hang of it the better, because you never know when you’re going to find yourself crossing paths with some not so nice space inhabitants.
After a couple of missions, players will unlock the Juke and Strafe abilities for their ship. Strafe will allow A-Tak to move laterally, making the whole act of circling targets much easier, and adding to your dodge capabilities. Juke, on the other hand, allows for the ship to jump right over a threat in Galak-Z and is one of your most valuable abilities. You may get the urge to start mashing on the square button once you enter a battle, but this is doing yourself a disservice. Instead, wait for enemy fire to come close before triggering Juke. After each use it takes a second or two before you’re able to use it again, so using it too early will leave you a sitting duck long enough for enemy aircraft to eat away at your shields.
Use caution and patience if you want to survive a fight. Enemy AI in Galak-Z is pretty impressive, so spamming any trick is just gonna leave their digitized faces laughing over your digitized wreck.
One of the greatest features of Galak-Z that will prove beneficial to budding pilots, is the fact that your enemies hate one another just as much as they hate you. Use this to your advantage whenever possible. This can be done in a couple of ways. You can purposely grab the attention of one enemy type and lead them towards another if you know their location. Or, you can be stealthy and let it happen naturally. You will get a screen notification whenever an enemy is in range. You can choose to engage, or just follow them. They usually end up stumbling upon another faction leading to a fight, after which you can clean up all of the rewards.
You’re ship isn’t the strongest in the galaxy so there is no shame in receiving help in Galak-Z, even if that help is from one of your enemies.
It’s easy to become overwhelmed in Galak-Z. Enemy factions have access to the same abilities A-Tak has, so you should expect sneak attacks, missile barrages, and the use of the environment against you. Even the most seasoned pilots will have trouble every now and then, so there is nothing wrong with running and living to fight another day. Remember, dying takes you back to the beginning of the season, not just the episode you’re on. So run like the wind and come back when you’re ready.
Stealth will also help you get the drop on a pack and minimize the risk of you getting swarmed. Every ship has a line of sight and a radius of hearing. Wait for them to turn away, and group up before emptying some red hot lasers into their backs. Ah, the joys of space.
Your health and upgrades persist between episodes of each season in Galak-Z. This is a fact that some players tend not to notice. After all, most games heal you once you return to base so that you can get back into the fight in a brand new jet. Galak-Z is not about hand-holding, so if you want your ship repaired, you’re going to have to shell out some Salvage (Galak-Z‘s currency).
This can be done between missions right before your next outing, or during missions if you’re lucky enough to find Crash’s ship. Just hop in and purchase the repairs, then head back out. Nobody wants to explode in the cold expanses of space, so don’t become the first.
Crash Coins are a special currency in Galak-Z that is sometimes dropped by defeated enemies (usually stronger enemies). If you die, you can purchase a replay if you have enough of these coins and override the whole start from the beginning thing. However, there’s a catch. Galak-Z will let you replay your current episode, but it will strip you of your upgrades (the exception being career unlocks such as bombs, and Juke). You will, however, have the opportunity to re-obtain your upgrades if you can find the container holding them withing the level. Make it a priority to find that container.
If you don’t have enough Crash Coins to restart your mission, or just don’t want to, they are not carried over to your next game. Instead, they are converted to Salvage to give you a jump on funding your upgrades.
Hitting the touch-pad on the DualShock 4 will bring up a map of your current level, more and more of it becomes unveiled as you fly around. Every now and then you’ll see a green blip on this map which indicates Salvage. But, it can also indicate something much more valuable, so it’s always worth seeking these out. There are upgrades hidden in crates that can alter your lasers, increase the abilities of your ship (thrusters, missile capacity, shield regen), or blueprints for better store items.
Granted, you’re making a gamble whenever you seek one of these blips out. There is a chance that it’s nothing more than five Salvage, but even a slight chance that it’s a new type of gun to help you get through the enemies’ ranks is worth the risk.
