The Assassin's Creed games have always been packed with collectibles to find and unlock, and the latest entry is no exception. We loved Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag in our review, so we want to help you get the most out of your Caribbean experience.
Some of the coolest collectibles in the game are the Mayan Stelae. Find all 16 of these artifacts and solve their puzzles, and you'll get yourself a nifty Mayan outfit that repels all gunfire. Pretty handy, eh? Follow along, and we'll help you track down and solve them all.
Stela #1-#8 are on page two, and stela #9-#16 are on page three! We've compiled the list with story progression in mind, but the coordinates for each stela are listed for you free explorers out there.
Want to track down all the Templar Keys in Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag? We've got a guide for that too!
Although the next stela on this list is a required part of the story, we have this one listed first. Why? It's found on Cat Island, where you play the mission Sugarcane and Its Yields, so you'll spot it first. When you leave the ship, run up the hill to the south to find it.
You'll find this one while playing the story. It's a required part of the This Old Cove mission. You'll also learn how to solve the brief puzzle each one presents, though if you grabbed the one on Cat Island first, you know the puzzles are quite simple.
We'll go after this one next, as it's not too far of course when heading to Tulum to meet James Kidd for the mission Nothing Is True - the first time you're asked to cross a particularly large stretch of water. Head southwest to find this island, and be very careful of cliffs while navigating the restricted cove. Once you disembark, you'll find the stela on your way up the massive Maan step pyramid.
This is actually found on the same island. Make your way to the western shore to find it.
This is the last place we'll stop before meeting Kidd. Continue northwest, and be careful in the restricted waters as you approach the island. Look for this beyond the massive rock formation.
Like some previous pairs of stelae, this one the same island, just to the east. Use the nearby trees and branches to reach it.
When you arrive at Tulum to meet with Kidd, you'll have several stela under your belt. After completing Overrun and Outnumberd, you'll be able to explore the island. It's on the western edge of the ruins.
For the next stela, we'll loop back north then east on our way to the mission The Forts in Nassau. This route will take you right by Cape Bonavista, where the game began. You'll find it by a waterfall at the northern edge of the map, and yes, it is a bit of a hike.
Keep en route to the mission, and you'll pass by the Matanzas plantation. Dock here and head southeast from the pier. You'll have to sneak through a restricted area, but there's a path on the eastern edge of the plantation that takes you straight here.
After completing the The Forts mission, you'll be just a bit northwest of Tortuga. This is probably the most heavily guarded area in the game, but it is possible to sneak in. That being said, you may want to upgrade your ship - and we've got a guide for that! - and fight your way through. In either case, you'll find the stela in the northern area of the plantation.
The next mission is located down south, but we're going to take a detour around the landmass first. Head west to Pinos Isle, which is restricted and guarded…by two measly frigates. Taking them down to access the isle shouldn't be a challenge for you by now. Follow the path from the shore to find the first stela slightly southwest from the massive step pyramid.
There's a second stela on this island. You'll find it at the northeastern edge of the isle.
Continue on this wraparound detour until you near Misteriosa. Southeast of here is an island plantation called New Bone. Just like Tortuga, it is possible, though very difficult, to sneak in here. Be stealthy in the approach or strong on the attack, and you'll reach the shore. The stela is just outside the restricted area in the northwestern section of the island.
You'll end up stranded here during the mission Marooned. As you chase Vane, make a left when you reach the ruins to spot this stela.
There's another stela here. Once you take out Vane, you can return to the island to explore the second set of ruins - just be aware that they're now a restricted area. You'll find the stela in the back of the area.
You won't be able to access Long Bay until the mission The Observatory. When you reach the last jungle in need of clearing, look in the southern area by the large black structures to find the game's final stela.
With all 16 Mayan Stelae puzzles solved and stones in pocket, return to Tulum. Head to the indicated spot on the mini-map (it's underneath the step pyramid) to place the stones. Grab the Mayan Outfit inside, and enjoy your new immunity to all ammunition!
