The Metal Gear Solid series is part of gaming legend, reknowned for its exacting, stealth-based gameplay. PSP fiends looking to get the most out of Peace Walker will benefit immensely by checking out our step-by-step walkthrough, hiding — camouflaged — against the wall, after the jump.
Playing as the character “Big Boss”, formerly known as Naked Snake, you dismount your motorcycle and proceed towards the beach, where some soldiers are practicing combat training. As you approach, one of the soldiers recognizes you, and invites you to join in the training. Walk/run around using the Analog Stick and press L (aim button) to look at the soldier. This will begin the in-game tutorial.
The combat instructor will bark orders that teach you the basic controls of the game. You can press Start at any time to skip the tutorial.
NOTE: There are three different control types to choose from (Shooter Type, Action Type, and Hunter Type). This walkthrough references to the default Shooter type.
First up is using the camera buttons to look around. Press Triangle to look up, press X to look down, press Circle to look right, and press Square to look left.
Next, you learn about movement. Tap Down on the directional pad to switch between a standing and crouching stance. To get in a prone position, hold Down on the directional pad. Keep in mind that you will be unable to move or shoot while prone.
Rolling is an important maneuver for dodging and getting over obstacles. To perform a roll, run by holding the Analog Stick in any direction, then tap R.
The instructor then gets into some basic combat skills. With your opponent near you, tap R repeatedly to perform an unarmed combo and take them out. You can also attack using the stun rod by first holding down L to aim and then pressing R to attack.
CQC or Close-Quarters-Combat is next on the agenda. With your opponent near, perform a throw by pressing R and then tilting the Analog Stick in any direction. If you want to restrain your opponent, simply hold down R when they are near. Throw an opponent after restraining them by tilting the Analog Stick. You can even throw your enemies at each other by first restraining one of them and then tilting the Analog Stick in the direction of another nearby enemy.
The final thing you learn in the tutorial is how to deal with multiple attackers. As the enemies surround you, press R and tilt the Analog Stick to throw one of them. If there are still enemies near you, an icon should appear. Tap R when you see the icon to grab another nearby enemy and throw them to the ground. Repeat this until all nearby enemies are dispatched.
This concludes the in-game tutorial. You will then be shown a cutscene that will set up your first mission.
Mission 1: Opening / Investigate the Supply Facility
Caribbean Coast
Throughout the missions, Miller will communicate with you over your headset. Since you now have your hands on some guns, Miller instructs you to take a little target practice before starting your mission. With your gun equipped, Hold L to aim and tap R to shoot. Try and take out a few coconuts and some of the debris floating around in the water.
Note: You can only use CQC if you are unarmed or using a one-handed weapon.
When you’ve had enough target practice, head towards the fence at the eastern part of the map. Use your Sound Indicator or press Start to check the Area Map if you are unsure where to go.
You will need to use one of your grenades to get past the fence. Equip your grenades by holding Right on the directional pad to open your weapons inventory. Here you can select your grenades by highlighting them with the Circle or Square button. With your grenades equipped, hold L to aim at the fence and then press R to throw a grenade. The longer you hold down R, the farther you will throw the grenade.
Item Tip: You can find more Grenades next to the barrel, just in front of the pier.
Now that you’ve blown the gate off the fence, you can proceed to the new area.
Bosque del Alba
After watching the cutscene, you will notice that there are three enemies in this area. You have the option of sneaking past them, shooting them, or using CQC to take them out.
Item Tip: You can find Rations located at the top of some steps at the eastern part of the of the map.
Once past the enemies, continue heading east to the next area.
Puerto del Alba
There are four enemies in this area; more will come if they are alerted to you presence. You can take out the enemies with your MK22 or just sneak past them by heading east and using the crates located to the south as cover.
Find the stairs a little to the north and go up them to reach your destination. Watch out for the soldier patrolling at the top of the stairs.
When you reach the objective, an interactive cutscene will trigger in which you will be asked to press buttons onscreen, so pay attention. Once it’s over, you will return to the Mother Base.
MSF Mother Base
The MSF Mother Base is where you will return after completing each mission. You will have a several options available to you whenever you are at the MSF Mother Base; however, the two options that are most important for managing your growing army are “Staff” and “R&D”.
Choose Staff first and check out the short tutorial. The current members of your team should all be listed in the “Waiting Room.” Since you have not yet assigned them, you will need to place members of your army in different teams that will make the best use of their abilities. To save time, you can scroll to the bottom of the list and select “Auto Assign” to automatically place any members in the Waiting Room into a team based on their most proficient ability. After assigning members to your Combat team and R&D team, you should unlock the MK22 – Rank 2 and the Analyzer.
Now exit the Staff option and go into R&D. Watch the short tutorial to learn about how to upgrade and develop weapons and items. Begin development of the MK22 – Rank 2 and the Analyzer by selecting them from the “Weapons” menu and “Items” menu respectively. You will have to complete a missions while the development of new weapons and items takes place.
Exit the R&D option and use R to move the menu to the right so you can select the “Save” option.
After saving your game, move the menu to the left by pressing L and choose the “Mission Selector” to pick your next mission.
Mission 2: Contact the Sandinista Comandante
Take the MK22 and M16A1 assault rifle with you on this mission.
El Cenagal: Jungle
As you start this mission you will see two soldiers near a truck in front of you. You can take them out using CQC but it’s probably easier to just shoot them both in the head with your MK22.
If you chose to take the Fulton System with you on this mission – as you should for most missions – you can equip it by holding down Left on the directional pad and highlighting it with the Circle or Square button. Once it is equipped, use the Fulton Recovery System to send unconscious enemy soldiers back to the Mother Base to be recruited into your army. By increasing the size of your army, you can build a bigger R&D team that will enable you to develop new weapons and items faster.
Note: There is an “Extra Ops” mission you can choose from the Mission Selector that explains how to perform a Fulton Recovery.
Item Tip: Just past the truck, there is a small path to the north east. Follow this path to find some Rnest.
Continue along the main road and head northwest into the new area.
El Cenagal: Ravine
This is a simple area with no enemies to be found. Make your way east past some logs and into the next area.
Item Tip: You can find some Rations and 5.56x45mm ammo near the second log in this area.
El Cenagal: Swamp
There are three enemies in this area. Shoot the first two in the head with your Mk22 and then try to sneak around and take out the third enemy from behind using CQC.
Item Tip: You should notice a small row boat in this area. Look on the north side of the boat to find some 5.56x45mm ammo.
Proceed northeast along the path into the next area.
Rio Del Jade
There are quite a few enemies in this area. As you enter, Miller instructs you to neutralize the security and then move inside the boathouse to meet with the Comandate.
Head a little south and use the piles of wooden pillars as cover. There are two soldiers patrolling near the first wood pile. Wait until they turn their backs and begin walking away from each other before you sneak up behind them and take them each out individually using CQC.
Continue to use the wood piles as cover and take out the other soldiers patrolling the ground. Use your MK22 if you are worried about being spotted.
In the southern part of the map there is a watchtower with a soldier in it. Wait till the soldier is facing north, then climb up the ladder and take him out with CQC.
Item Tip: Go inside the small house next to the watchtower to find some 5.56x45mm ammo and Rnest.
The last guard remaining is in the boat house. Keep out of sight until he turns his back on you then sneak up behind him and knock him out using CQC.
Once all the enemies in the area have been taken care of, an interactive cutscene will trigger and you will return to the MSF Mother Base.
Mission 3: Pursue Amanda
Take the MK22 and M16A1 assault rifle with you on this mission.
Rio Del Jade
In the starting area, there are four enemies on patrol. Move into the house with the gun turret located to the south and wait for the enemies to spread out a bit. When the opportunity arises, try and take them out using CQC or your MK22. Once the way is clear you can proceed north to the next area.
El Cenagal: Swamp
There is just one enemy in the area so get behind him and beat him to the ground. Since there are no other enemies around to see you, use Fulton Recovery on the fallen soldier.
Item Tip: You can find Rations next to the tree in the center of the map.
Continue on west to the next area.
El Cenagal: Ravine
As you enter the area, Miller tells you that Amanda just crossed the rope bridge. There are two soldiers nearby, one patrolling along the side path to the north, and another by the rope bridge. Take out the first enemy and then follow Miller’s instructions by hanging over the side of the rope bridge to sneak past the second enemy and move to the next area.
Item Tip: You can find more Rations just in front of you, to the north, as you this enter.
El Cenagal: Swamp
There are three enemies in the area. Take out the one directly in front of you first by using CQC, but be ready to quickly use your MK22 to take out the other soldier to the north if he spots you.
Item Tip: You can find a Confidential Document located just to the south of where the first soldier was standing.
The last enemy is further to the northeast, sneak along the side and use the trees and bushes as cover until you can get close enough to take him out.
Proceed to the next area.
Bananal Fruta de Oro: Sorting Shed
This is a larger area so you shouldn’t have too much trouble sneaking around and taking out the five or so enemies either with your MK22 or CQC. Just make frequent use of the storage crates as cover and maybe give fallen enemies a extra jolt with you Stun Rod to keep them unconscious.
Move to the northern part of the map and you should see a room near a fence with a prisoner inside. You can use Fulton Recovery on the prisoner to send him back to the Mother Base.
NOTE: Prisoners often have very good stats that will greatly strengthen your growing army. Try to rescue as many prisoners as possible throughout the game.
Item Tip: You can find more Fulton SYS at the south west part of the map near the sorting house.
Item Tip: You can find some Rations in the northern room with the prisoner as well as a Love Box a little further to the west.
Go inside the sorting house and stay crouched so you can easily sneak behind the soldiers and subdue them. At the south west part of the sorting house there is another room with a prisoner. If you still have balloons left, use Fulton Recovery on the prisoner.
Item Tip: You can find a Confidential Document and some 5.56x45mm ammo in the room with the prisoner inside the sorting house.
Now, go out the doorway located at the northern part of the sorting house to get past the fence. There are a couple of guards out there so take them out quickly with your MK22 so they don’t spot you. Once you’ve cleared the way, head north to complete the mission.
Item Tip: You can find some Rations against the eastern wall near the fence.
Item Tip: There is a room to the northwest just before you reach the exit of the area where you can find some 5.56x45mm ammo as well as the T.Stripe outfit.
Mission 4: Armored Vehicle Battle (Lav-Type G)
If you have developed the M1C Sniper Rifle, equip it for this mission along with your M16A1. The increased range of the M1C makes taking out enemies from afar much easier.
At the beginning of the mission, Miller instructs you to find a way to neutralize the armored vehicle; however, the vehicle also has a lot of heavily armed guards surrounding it. Pull out your M1C and try to snipe as many enemies as you can before they notice you. Take out the two on the west side of the vehicle first. The two guards on the east side of the vehicle will then come to the west side to see what’s going, giving you the opportunity to snipe them as well. Since the guards are heavily armored, it will take two or three shots to take each of them down so be prepared to reload a couple of times.
After you take out the first four guards, a second wave will come out. Run to the warehouse on the north side of the map.
The warehouse has both an east and west exit and provides you with good cover from the armored vehicles machine guns while you try to snipe the next four guards. If any of the guards try to get in the warehouse, tap Right on the directional pad to quickly switch to your Stun Rod so you can use CQC to take them out.
Once all the guards have been taken care of, move out of the warehouse to the south eastern part of the map where there is a pile of wood pillars. Use the pillars as cover while you damage the armored vehicle using your grenades and M16A1.
When you have dealt a significant amount of damage to the armored vehicle, the leader will get out and use the machine gun to try and take you out. Switch to your M1 and snipe him from behind the wood pillars. This will complete the mission and trigger an interactive cutscene.
Mission 5: Rescue Chico
This is a stealth-heavy mission so equip the Mk22 and T.Stripe Camo before you start.
Camino de Lava: Hillside
There are two enemies in the starting area. Head north until you come to the fork in the road. Take the east side and continue a little ways until you see the first soldier patrolling to the north. Put a dart in his neck with your MK22 or wait for him to turn his back and use CQC on him.
You’ll find the second soldier a little farther to the north. Take him out to clear the way to the next area.
Camino de Lava: Junction
There are three enemies in this area including one sniper. Move up to the shipping crate in front of you and wait for the first soldier to turn his back before knocking him out.
The next target is the sniper. You should be able to figure out his position by looking at the trajectory of the bullets he is shooting for target practice. Keep to the left side of the path and peak your head around the corner until you can see the sniper on ledge to the northwest. It may seem a little far away for a handgun, but you can take him out with a few quick shots from your MK22. With the sniper out of the way, taking out the last soldier should be a piece of cake.
As you move further northwest, you will pass a train with a prisoner on it. Use Fulton Recovery on the prisoner and then proceed to the next area.
Aldea Los Despiertos
As you enter the area, quickly hide in order to avoid being seen the patrolling soldier. Miller will tell you over the headset that Chico must be in one of the nearby houses. Press Start and view the map of the area. The houses where you might find Chico are marked with an orange dot.
You can search for Chico by approaching the houses with blue doors and pressing Up on the directional pad to peer through the peep hole.
Knock out the three soldiers patrolling in the area to make searching easier.
Once you find the house with Chico in it, a cutscene triggers and you will complete the mission.
Mission 6: Pursue the Jungle Train
Change your uniform from T.Stripe to Squares for this mission. The Squares Camo will help you blend in better around wooden buildings.
Note: You can obtain the Squares uniform by completing Extra Op 30 – Classified Document Retrieval.
Take the MK22 and make sure you save at least four Fulton SYS so you can rescue all the prisoners you come across on this mission.
Aldea Los Despiertos
The enemies are patrolling the same sections in the area that they did in the last mission. Sneak up on them and use CQC or put them down with your MK22.
Item Tip: You can find some 12 Gauge ammo on the west side of the map, as well as some Rnest on the east side.
Move south to the next area.
Camino de Lava: Junction
As you enter the area, Miller tells you that the train is just beyond the coffee factory to the east.
There are two soldiers and a sniper in this area. Take the first one out with CQC and then hop up on the train (where you found the prisoner in the last mission) to get a clear shot at the sniper with your MK22.
The last soldier is on the east side of the train. Take him out or sneak past him and continue northeast to the next area.
Cafetal Aroma Encantado: Entrance
This is a particularly large area with several soldiers. Head north towards the fence with the hole in it and you should see the first soldier. Wait for him to start heading west and then knock him out with CQC.
The second soldier is a little further to the west. You should be able to easily take him out with the method of your choice.
Item Tip: You can find some Rnest if you head west just past the truck in this section of the map.
Check the north side of the westernmost building in this section to find a prisoner. Use Fulton Recovery on the prisoner and then continue moving north. You should see a soldier patrolling just up ahead at the top of the hill. Take him out with your MK22 and the head east past the truck towards the open gate.
Item tip: You can find some 5.56x45mm ammo in the west corner of this section of the map.
Take out the guard standing on the second floor of the building to the north before moving through the gate. Proceed through the gate and take out the soldier patrolling the ground with CQC but watch out for another guard patrolling on the second floor. Hide between the metal cylinders on the west side and wait for the guard on the second floor to stop moving before shooting him with your MK22.
You will find a prisoner directly across from the metal cylinders. Use Fulton Recovery on the prisoner and then continue heading north to the next area.
Cafetal Aroma Encantado: Mill
There are three enemies in this area. Sneak west to spot the first soldier and take him out with your MK22.
Before moving out into the open, look north and upward to shoot the soldier on the second floor.
Once you’ve taken care of the first two soldiers, head to the west side of the map to find a room with a prisoner in it. Use Fulton Recovery on the prisoner and then head northeast through the gate to find another prisoner you can recover.
Go back through the gate you just entered and look to the west to find a ladder you can climb to get to the second floor. The last soldier is guarding the exit on the second floor. Take him out and then move outside and down the stairs to the final area of the mission.
El Cadalso
Your job now is to secure the train by taking out the five soldiers guarding it.
The easiest thing to do here is pull out your MK22 and shoot all the guards from behind the pile of wood where you start. Take out the two soldiers in the middle first, followed by the two on the outside.
The last soldier should be on the northwest side. Take him out then move towards the train to trigger a cutscene and complete the mission.
Mission 7: Tank Battle (T-72U)
If you’ve developed the RPG2, equip it for this mission along with your M16A1. The RPG2 it will help you take down the tank a lot faster. Otherwise, just take some grenades and C4.
Since you’ll be using a lot of ammo, it’s a good idea to take Supply Markers with you. By placing and activating Supply Markers you can call in additional ammunition and restorative items during the mission.
This battle is very similar to the armored vehicle battle in the sense that you will first focus on taking out the soldiers before taking out the tank. However, unlike in the armored vehicle battle, this time you might as well just come out guns blazing rather than trying to snipe individual soldiers from afar.
Pull out your RPG2 and fire a rocket directly at the tank. Hopefully you will take out a few soldiers in the process. If you don’t have the RPG2, try and place some C4 in the path of the tank and blow it up at the right moment.
Now that you’ve got their attention, the tank will constantly be letting loose a barrage of missiles and machine gun fire in your general direction. Pull out your M16A1 and run around the perimeter of the level to avoid being hit by the the tank’s weapons. Be sure to make frequent use of the roll by tapping R as you run.
Try to hide behind some of the train cars so the tank will knock them over. The fallen train cars will provide you with good cover since they can’t be destroyed.
If you find yourself low on health, get behind one of the fallen train cars and hold Down on the directional pad to regain some health so you can spare your rations. As the soldiers get near, press Select to toggle Auto Aim and take them out with your M16A1. Make sure to keep an eye out for incoming missiles from the tank while you are dealing with the soldiers.
When the soldiers have stopped coming after you, it’s time to go for the tank. Take out your RPG2 and fire four or five rockets at the tank to get the leader to expose himself. The tank usually fires three missiles at a time and then pauses briefly before firing another volley. You can use the break in missile fire to get in a good shot with your RPG2. Alternatively, you can lay your C4 around the map and use grenades to damage the tank.
Once the leader has exposed himself, you can target him directly. Fire a couple more rockets to blow him away, or pull out your M16A1 and use manual targeting. Once you kill him you will complete the mission.
Mission 8: Destroy the Barricade
This is a pretty easy mission. All you really need in terms of weaponry are your MK22 and C4.
Cafetal Aroma Encantado: Mill
There are three enemies in this area. Head west up the stairs and into the mill but watch out for the soldier just inside. Hide behind the stack of boxes and wait for the soldier to turn his back before you take him out.
Item Tip: You can find some Rations under the stairs at the start of the mission.
The next two soldiers are below you on the ground floor. Move to the ladder on the east side and look down. You should see a solider patrolling directly below you. Jump down right on top of him to knock him out cold and then use Fulton Recovery on him. The last soldier is in the area is to the west. Sneak over there and take him out.
Head south to the next area.
Cafetal Aroma Encantado: Entrance
Unlike in Mission 6, there are only three enemies in this area now. Move south until you see the first soldier patrolling on the second floor ahead of you. Pull out your MK22 to tranquilize him.
Continue moving south out the gate and down the path. You should see the second soldier patrolling near the building ahead of you. Take him out with CQC when he is facing south and use Fulton Recovery to send him back to Mother Base.
Head east towards the fence and you should come across the third soldier. Use CQC on him and then go south through the hole in the fence. As you come to the fork in the road, Miller tells you to take the west path to get to the prison camp.
Aldea Los Despiertos
This is the same area where you found Chico in mission 5. There are several heavily armed guards here now so you will likely want to try and take them out using CQC rather than wasting time and bullets trying to shoot them. If a guard happens to spot you, the other soldiers will surround you quickly. Recall what you learned in the in-game tutorial about taking on multiple attackers with CQC and beat all the soldiers to the ground before they know what hit them.
Proceed northwest towards the orange line that appears on the Area Map to reach the barricade. You can recognize the barricade by the yellow markings seen at the top of the wall.
Equip your C4 by holding Right on the directional pad and selecting it from your available weapons. Standing in front of the barricade, hold L and then press R to place some C4 on the wall. Retreat to a safe distance after planting the C4 and then press R to detonate it.
With the barricade down, you can now head north to complete the mission and return the the MSF Mother Base
Mission 9: Infiltrate the Crater Base
Take your Mk22 and M16A1 with you on this mission.
Los Cantos: Canyon
There are three enemies in this area. Head north to come to a bridge where the first soldier is patrolling. Take him out with a couple shots from your MK22 and continue heading north, down the ramp, to the lower section of the bridge.
NOTE: The enemies in this area are wearing helmets so you will need to shoot them in the head twice to take them out.
Pick up the Rnest at the bottom of the ramp and then move north behind the first pillar. There are another two soldiers on the other side of the pillar. Wait for the patrolling soldier to walk north and then sneak around the second pillar to take him out from behind with CQC. The other soldier is right next to him so you need to take him out quickly before he can radio for backup.
Continue up the stairs to the second half of the bridge and then head north to the next area.
Los Cantos: Ridge
There are three enemies in this area. The first is located a little ahead of you, in the middle of the road. Try to approach him from the side and take him out with CQC or just shoot him twice in the head with your MK22.
The next two soldiers are patrolling a little to the north near a truck. Sneak around the truck and take both of them out with CQC then hop up on the ledge located on the south side of the truck to find a prisoner and some rations in the room to the south.
Once you have used Fulton Recovery on the prisoner, continue heading northeast to the next area.
Fuerte Le Ladera
This area can be a bit of a challenge if you don’t use the right approach.
Move in a little and you should see a soldier patrolling near some shipping crates just past a truck. Wait until his back is turned, and then sneak up and take him out with CQC.
Now turn your attention to the building in front of you, to the north. You should be able to see two guards on the top of the wall, but proceed with caution because there are actually three of them up there.
Move to the west side of the building where you see the ladder. Wait for the soldier near the top of the ladder to walk east before you ascend. When you reach the top, grab the soldier that is nearest to you and throw him into the other soldier at your side to take them both out. Another soldier will come out from behind a stack of boxes so be prepared to quickly take him out so he doesn’t alert other enemies to your presence.
Now that the soldiers are taken care of, move west and drop down the hole in the floor to find another prisoner for you to use Fulton Recovery on.
Item Tip: You can find some 5.56x45mm ammo in the building just west of the building with the prisoner and some Rations in the building to the north.
Head northwest to reach the entrance to the Crater Base and trigger an interactive cutscene in which you will need to identify the truck you saw carrying the nukes. After the cutscene, you complete the mission.
NOTE: If you check truck 63824 you can find Hideo Kojima and recruit him into your army.
Mission 10: Pupa Battle
You’re going to want to take your heaviest weapons for this mission. Equip both the RPG2 and LAW rocket launchers along with the Support Supply Marker so you can replenish your ammo during the battle.
This time it’s man versus machine, there will be no pesky soldiers running around to distract you from the main target. Not that the Pupa needs any additional assistance considering it already has an extensive arsenal of weapons and a wide range of attacks to flatten you with.
At the start of the mission, the Pupa will mainly use three attacks. A machine gun attack, a charging attack, and a shock attack. Run around the outskirts of the level to avoid the machine gun attacks that occur while the Pupa is still moving.
When the Pupa stops, it’s time to attack. Aim your rockets at the cylindrical shaped object located on the front of the Pupa, this is the AI brain that is controlling the machine. You’ll likely only have time for one shot before the Pupa goes back on the offensive again with either machine guns or shock attacks, so be sure start dodging again once you fire.
There will be breaks between the attacks while the Pupa is stationary. Use the breaks to fire additional rockets at the AI cylinder. Luckily, you can reload your rocket launchers while you are dodging by tapping the L button or pressing Up on the directional pad.
Once you’ve dealt a significant amount of damage to the Pupa, it will begin varying its attacks and even throw in some new, more powerful, shock attacks. When this happens, find the ladder and climb up to the ledge. The ledge is a good position to fight the remainder of the battle because, although you will still be vulnerable to the machine gun fire, you will be less vulnerable to the shock attacks. You will also be able to avoid many of the charge attacks by getting in the prone position, which has the added bonus of recovering some of your health. Even aiming your rockets is made easier from the ledge since the elevation puts you on the same level as the AI cylinder you are targeting.
Continue to fire rockets at the Pupa when it is stationary until it malfunctions and collapses to the ground. You may have to use the Support Supply Marker to bring in some extra ammo.
Once the Pupa is downed, run up to it and press the Up on the directional pad to open the AI cylinder and go inside. You will see a display with a timer and bunch of rectangles, some of which have colors and shapes on them. The colored rectangles are the AI needed for Metal Gear. Remove them by highlighting them and then pressing X.
As soon as the timer runs out, you will exit the exploding Pupa and trigger a cutscene, completing the mission.
Mission 11: Travel to the Cloud Forest
The enemies on this level are tougher to spot. Take the Night Vision Goggles with you in addition to your Mk22.
NOTE: If you have not yet developed the Night Vision Goggles, try placing more people in your R&D team and then completing a couple of the Extra Ops missions you have unlocked.
Selva de la Leche: Jungle
There are three enemies in this area. Head east until you see a ledge on the north side. Hop up on the ledge and move north until you see an item box. Don’t rush to get the item right away because there are two soldiers close by that are hiding behind trees to the northeast. Equip your Night Vision Goggles so you can spot the soldiers and then pull out your MK22 to take out the first soldier lying prone directly below you.
NOTE: The Night Vision Goggles have limited battery life. If it expires, you will have to wait for a recharge before you can use them again.
Hop down from the ledge and sneak around the tree to the northeast to use CQC on the other soldier.
Go back and grab the Rnest on the ledge and then continue moving north until you come to another ledge on the east side. Hop up the ledge and wait beside the nearby tree. There is a soldier directly on the opposite side of the tree. Take him out with CQC before proceeding all the way north to the next area.
Selva de la Leche: Hillside
There are two enemies in this area. When you enter, immediately drop down from the ledge and follow the wall to the east. You will come to a guard that is lying behind a log in the middle of the area. Take him out with your MK22 then crouch behind the log and look to the west with your Night Vision Goggles to spot another soldier lying next to a tree in some bushes. Snipe him with your Mk22 or sneak up from the south side and take him out with CQC.
Continue to move along the eastern wall until you come to the large tree where two paths intersect. There is a soldier lying behind this tree that you should be able to easily take out with CQC.
Item Tip: You can find the Snake Uniform behind the tree where the two paths intersect.
Before heading north to the next area, take the path to the west to find a prisoner that you can use Fulton Recovery on. As soon as you move to the next area, a cutscene triggers and you complete the mission.
Mission 12: Attack Chopper Battle (Mi-24A)
Take the M60, the RPG2, and some Grenades with you for this battle.
When the mission starts, the chopper and the ground soldiers have not yet discovered you. Pull out your Grenades and lob one into the approaching group of soldiers. Hopefully the blast will take most of them out but switch to your M60 and put Auto Aim on to kill any survivors that emerge.
The chopper will likely have noticed you by now. The small piece of elevated land on the west side of the map where you began the level provides good cover from the chopper’s machine gun and missile attacks. Just keep crouched and circle the elevated land to keep it between you and the chopper.
Eventually, the chopper will stop firing so it can drop another group of soldiers. When this happens, switch to your RPG2 and fire a rocket at the chopper. If you’re quick enough, you can kill many of the soldiers before they even have the chance to get on the ground.
Clear out any soldiers that made it to the ground with your M60 and then continue dodging the chopper’s attacks until it gets ready to drop the next wave of soldiers.
You will need to repeat this process a few times until you have eliminated all the soldiers. When the chopper stops dropping soldiers, use your RPG2 to deal it damage until the leader shows his face.
Once the leader is out you can switch back to your M60 and use manual targeting to take him out and complete the mission.
Mission 13: Head for the Lab
Take the MK22, Night Vision Goggles, and Huey’s ID card with you for this mission.
Catarata de le Muerte
You start the mission in the same area where you fought the chopper in the previous mission. There are no enemies here now so just proceed north to the next area.
Selva de la Muerte: Bottom of Cliff
There are two enemies in this area. Head north through the ruins but keep you eyes peeled because there is a sniper hiding in the bushes near a broken wall to the northeast. Equip you Night Vision Goggles so you can see him better, then take him out with you MK22. Keep moving north and head up the eastern set of stairs until you see another sniper lying down. Take him out and then continue northwest to the next area.
Selva de la Muerte: Top of Cliff
There are four enemies in this area. Move north and hide behind the concrete block. Put on your Night Vision Goggles and you should see the first soldier standing behind a dead tree to the southeast. Take him out with your MK22 then continue moving along the northern edge of the map to find the second soldier crouched down inside a concrete semi-circle. You should be able to easily take him out from behind with CQC.
From your current position, there are two snipers in the distance; one is located to the south, and the other is to the east. Take out the one to the south first by sneaking around the tall wall in the middle of the map until you are close enough to use your MK22 or use CQC.
Item Tip: You can find some rations in the southeast corner of this area.
From here you can move northeast to get behind the second sniper and either take him out from behind or just continue on your way east into the next area to trigger a cutscene.
Ruinas de Xochiquetzal
There are five enemies in this area. Head east until you see the archway in the wall to the north. Be careful, because there are four soldiers patrolling near the archway. Wait for the first three to turn their backs to you and take them out individually with CQC. You should still see another guard facing you a little further north but don’t worry about him just yet. Go west around the first structure and take out the soldier that is patrolling there, then follow the hallway to the north and you should come to a ledge where you can hop up to find a prisoner.
Item Tip: You can find some Rations by heading to the southwest corner of the section past the archway.
Use Fulton Recovery on the prisoner and then sneak to the northwest to either take out the soldier you saw before or just head north to complete the mission.
Mission 14: Locate the ID Card
In this mission, you go through the exact same areas as you did in the previous mission, and most of the enemies are in the same places. Take the Night Vision Goggles with you but remember to leave space in your items inventory so you can pick up the ID Card.
Ruinas de Xochiquetzal
You are looking for the soldier in the orange jacket.
Since many of the enemies are patrolling the same areas as they did in the previous mission, it is actually easier to just sneak past them rather than trying to take them all out. Use your stealth skills and sneak past the soldiers and move to the next area.
There is a prisoner in the southwest corner of the map. You can either rescue him now or on your way back through the area.
Selva de la Muerte: Top of Cliff
Try and do the same thing in this area. Equip your Night Vision Goggles so you can spot the camouflaged soldiers and then attempt to sneak to the next area. Keep to the north wall but watch out for the two snipers that are lying down in the bushes.
Selva de la Muerte: Bottom of Cliff
There are a few snipers that are tough to spot in this area. Use the Night Vision Goggles and make your way south but keep to the west side of the map. After you pass the long, broken wall in the middle of the map, move southeast towards the next area.
Item Tip: You can find some Rations near the long broken wall in the middle of the map.
Catarata de la Muerte
You should find the soldier with the orange jacket in this area. Move to the southeast and take him out from behind with CQC. When the soldier is unconscious, pat him down by pressing Up on the directional pad. He will drop the ID Card that you can use to access the AI lab.
Note: Make sure your Fulton Recovery System is not equipped when you go to pat down the soldier. If it is, you will end up sending him back to Mother Base without getting the ID Card.
Once you have the ID Card, make your way back through the other areas to where you began the mission. You may have to take out some of the enemies on the way back to make things a little easier.
When you get back to the AI lab, a cutscene will trigger, and you will need to steal some AI parts like you did in the Pupa battle. After that, another interactive cutscene will trigger and you will complete the mission.
Mission 15: Chrysalis Battle
If you have developed the FIM-43, take it with you for this mission, along with the M60.
The Chrysalis is that singing, levitating, helicopter thing that has been pestering you in cutscenes throughout the game. Now is your chance to finally destroy it.
Equip your FIM-43 and start launching missiles at it. To deal maximum damage, try to lock onto the cylindrical AI unit located at the front of the Chrysalis (just like you did in the Pupa battle).
In addition to a powerful rail gun, a chain gun, missiles, and kidnapper drones, the Chrysalis also has two modes that it alternates between. In normal mode, the Chrysalis continuously flies around you, launching missiles and firing its chain gun. In battle mode, the Chrysalis can use all of its weapons but will remain stationary for some attacks. You’ll have to keep moving as you fire and reload if you want to avoid all the attacks.
A good strategy is to use the FIM-43 to lock on to the Chrysalis when it is flying around in normal mode, and then change to your M60 when the Chrysalis switches to battle mode. You should be able to deal some good damage with your M60 if you can target the AI cylinder while the Chrysalis charges up for an attack.
If you need to get some health back, head for the southwest corner of the map and lie down between the structure and the wall, just north of some stairs that you can’t climb. You should be safe there long enough to regain some, if not all, of your health. This is also a good spot to place supply markers, as you will likely need additional ammo on this mission.
Continue dealing damage to the Chrysalis until its health bars are depleted, causing it to crash to the ground. Attack the AI cylinder to open the hatch so you can crawl inside and steal the AI parts.
After you’ve stolen as many parts as you can, the Chrysalis is finished and you complete the mission.
Mission 16: Travel to the Mine Base
This is a very short and simple mission.
There are several enemies on patrol in the area and you can choose to take out none, some, or all of them. The first thing you should do, however, is make your way west along the northern wall to find the prisoner that is behind the pile of wood. After you have rescued the prisoner with Fulton Recovery, the easiest thing to do is climb up the ladder you saw on the first building, head southwest all the way across the tin rooftop, drop down off the back side of the building, and then make your way west. You can take out the two or three soldiers that you see along the way, or just sneak past them to the next area to trigger a cutscene and complete the mission.
Mission 17: Eliminate the Guards
This mission is made for sniping. Take a sniper rifle with you, along with the FIM-43 to take out the moving targets.
The Mine Base is heavily guarded by about 30 soldiers and some kidnapper drones. Luckily, with the right tactics, you shouldn’t have to move around too much.
First, take out your FIM-43 and target only the kidnapper drones. There are exactly five drones so try not to target any of the soldiers by mistake. If you accidentally miss, you may have to call in supplies or attempt to shoot down the drones with your sniper rifle (which can prove to be quite challenging).
Once the kidnapper drones are out of the way, you can focus on taking out the snipers and other soldiers. Pull out your sniper rifle and go to work. You should be able to locate your targets pretty easily by the trajectory of their laser sightings and gun fire.
The remaining enemies will come out in waves. Hold Down on the directional pad and rest behind one of the metal shields if you need to regain some health.
Some of the soldiers may try to attack you from close range with assault rifles. If you see enemies approaching you, lob some grenades at them. If the grenades fail and they get too close, you will have to resort to taking them out with CQC.
The last wave of soldiers has sniper rifles and rocket launchers. Use the metal shields as cover and then counter attack with your sniper rifle right after the soldiers with the rocket launchers fire on you. Doing this should allow you to pick off the last few soldiers one by one and complete the mission.
Mission 18: Cocoon Battle
You’re going to need a lot of firepower to bring down this behemoth. Take the RPG2, M60, and Supply Markers with you for this mission.
Even though the Cocoon is outfitted with a massive cannon, missile pods, bombs, and a lot of machine gun turrets, it’s really not as tough as it looks. Right off the bat you can pull out your RPG2 and fire a couple of rockets directly at its AI cylinder.
When the Cocoon prepares to fire its main cannon, either run continuously in one direction or try to get underneath it to avoid the blast radius. After the Cocoon fires off four or five shots from its main cannon, it will use a different weapon to attack you. Run out and target the AI Cylinder in between attacks.
It’s a good idea to try and keep to the higher ground in this level. This way you can use the metal shields as cover, and you won’t have to worry about getting run over by the Cocoon when it moves around.
Continue to run around and fire on the AI cylinder. You shouldn’t have too much trouble getting a clear shot since the Cocoon isn’t all that fast and it’s machine gun turrets aren’t much of a threat. The only time you really need to worry about dodging is when the Cocoon fires its missiles or its main cannon. If you find you are low on health, get behind one of the metal shields and hold Down on the directional pad to recover a little. Just be sure to watch out for the main cannon or missiles.
When you run out of rockets, switch to your M60 and let loose. You may even need to drop a supply marker to get some extra ammo.
Eventually, when you’ve dealt enough damage to the Cocoon, a ladder will drop down off the side of it. Climb that ladder, then climb another ladder to get to the top of the Cocoon where the AI cylinder in located. Watch out for the machine guns and unload whatever ammo you have left on the AI cylinder.
Once you’ve depleted the health of the AI Cylinder, climb inside and grab the AI parts to finish it off and complete the mission.
Mission 19: Infiltrate the Underground Base
Take the Mk22 with you for this mission.
AI Weapon Hanger
As you enter the area, soldiers are ordered to guard the elevator that you need to get to.
Jump down to the lower level and head to the southwest corner to find a prisoner. Rescue the prisoner and then take out the soldier that was sent to patrol that area.
Make your way northeast towards the elevator. As you approach, you will see four guards patrolling in front of the elevator doors. Stay out of sight and pull out your Mk22 to put a dart in the head of the one closest to you. When he faints, the second soldier will notice and move to the fallen soldiers position. Take him out before he has time to wake up his sleeping friend. Hopefully the third soldier notices and comes out so you can put a dart in his head as well. The last remaining soldier should now be an easy target for CQC. Knock him out then go to the elevator and press Up on the directional pad to call it. When the elevator arrives, enter it to go to the next area.
NOTE: You will be unable to call the elevator if there are nearby enemies aware of your position. Don’t get spotted unless you plan on just killing all the soldiers anyways.
Underground Passage A
Go east through the hallway and hide behind the crate, next to the first pillar. You should see a soldier standing guard. Another soldier runs up to tell him that help is needed on the upper level. Wait for both the soldiers to run past you and then move to the opposite side of the crate so they don’t spot you when they turn around.
Continue moving east, but watch out for additional soldiers running to join the other two at the elevator doors.
There is another prisoner next to a pillar near the exit. Rescue him with Fulton Recovery and then proceed to the next area.
Underground Passage B
There are three enemies in this area. Head east and take out the first soldier. He should be an easy target since he is on his own. The next two, however, are patrolling together near the exit and one of them is carrying a shield. Wait until they turn their backs, then sneak up behind the one with the shield and throw him into the other one. If you miss with the throw, go for the quick take down on the second soldier by tapping R at the right moment.
Continue east until you come to the closed shutter door. You need to open the door with your own strength. Approach the door and hold Up on the directional pad to begin lifting the door. Rapidly tap Up on the directional pad to continue lifting and then, press the Analog Stick to pass under the door.
Head east down the dark hallway to trigger a cutscene and complete the mission.
Mission 20: Torture Chamber Escape
You lose all your gear at the start of this mission. In the interactive cutscene, tap Triangle rapidly to stay alive while Dr. Strangelove tortures you.
Torture Chamber
After you wake up in your cell, walk over to the mirror. When the action symbol appears, press Up on the directional pad and Snake will remove a Jigsaw from his chest.
Equip the Jigsaw, then wait for the guard to pass before you walk over to the lock on the cell door. Pick the lock by tapping L and R repeatedly and then press Up on the directional pad to open the door.
NOTE: If you are caught near your cell with the door open you will fail the mission.
Escape your cell and head east along the northern wall. There are two guards patrolling the eastern side of the cell block so be prepared to take them out with CQC before moving south to the exit.
Now you have the choice of either exiting the torture chamber or rescuing the prisoner in the cell on the eastern side. If you choose to rescue the prisoner, you first need to get the Fulton Recovery System that is found in the southwest room on the map. You will probably need to take out a few of soldiers with CQC along the way.
Item Tip: You can find some Rations in the northwest room on the map.
Once you’ve recovered the Fulton Recovery System, move to the control room on the west side of the cell block. Approach the control console and press Up on the directional pad when the icon appears. A screen will appear where you can unlock the cell doors, release prisoners, and vary voltage. Free the prisoner then head to the cell where he is located on the eastern side of the cell block. Open the prisoner’s cell by pressing Up on the directional pad and use Fulton Recovery to rescue him.
Now head south to exit the torture chamber and complete the mission.
Mission 21: Head for Peace Walker’s Hanger
Take the Mk22 and M16A1 with you for this mission.
AI Weapon Hanger
Head west and go up the stairs to find a prisoner near a console. Rescue the prisoner, then drop down and move northeast towards the elevator.
There are two soldiers guarding the elevator, but only one of them is patrolling. Hide behind the row of crates and wait for the patrolling soldier to turn his back before putting him to sleep with your MK22. If the second guard notices and comes to check things out, quickly run up to him and use CQC. Alternatively, you can take these soldiers out from the upper level using your MK22.
Get on the elevator to go to the next area.
Underground Passage A
Sneak past the first few soldiers and move east. The last two soldiers are blocking the exit, so use your MK22 to take them out before continuing east to the next area.
Underground Passage B
Some of the soldiers in this area are carrying shields, and taking down multiple soldiers that are carrying shields can be quite difficult. Try your best not to get spotted.
You can find a prisoner on the north side of the upper level. Go up the stairs, rescue the prisoner, then continue east on the upper level.
There are three soldiers up here. Try to sneak behind them and take them out individually with CQC.
When the way is clear, move down the stairs and open the shutter door by tapping Up on the directional pad.
Continue east to trigger a cutscene and complete the mission.
Mission 22: Peace Walker Battle
You’re going to need your heaviest firepower for this mission. Take rocket launchers, Supply Markers, Strike Markers, and plenty of healing items.
The Peace Walker is equipped with a flamethrower, cluster bombs, and missiles. It will also try to stomp you so it’s a good idea to stick to higher ground.
You can employ a battle strategy similar to what you did in the Cocoon battle. Go up one of the ramps to get to the higher level, then run back and forth to dodge incoming attacks. Whenever there is a pause between attacks, fire at one of the Peace Walker’s AI cylinders. It has one located on its head, and another located at the back of its torso.
Although it is a little riskier, you can also deal some heavy damage to the Peace Walker by calling in strikes. Equip your Strike Markers and place one directly underneath the Peace Walker by holding L and then pressing R. Get to a safe distance and press R to call in the strike on the marker’s position. Hopefully you can avoid getting stomped long enough to get the Strike Marker in place.
Continue your assault on the Peace Walker. You will likely need to use one or two Supply Markers to bring in additional ammo.
Once the Peace Walker’s health bar is depleted, an interactive cutscene will trigger that involves some vigorous button pressing. After that, you complete the mission.
Mission 23: Infiltrate the U.S. Missile Base
Your tranquilizer darts won’t be as effective against soldiers wearing helmets. Take the silenced M1911A1 and the M16A1 with you on this mission.
Back Gate
As the mission starts, Miller tells you to get to the control tower that is visible to the west. Head north around the back of the building and take out the guard on the other side with CQC but make sure to stay out of sight of the two guards that are patrolling on the upper level. Alarms will sound if they spot you.
Note: The enemy soldiers on this mission are much quicker to react to your presence.
Sneak west along the north wall until you pass a turret, then head south. You should see a cart with two barrels on it. Go behind the barrels and jump down the hole there. Follow the path and you will come to a prisoner. Rescue the prisoner and then head north into the hallway where you can hear a kidnapper drone patrolling. Pull out your M1911A1 and shoot down the kidnapper drone.
Head west down the hallway and turn south. Climb the ladder you come to and take out the two soldiers patrolling at the top before proceeding west to the next area.
Small Maintenance Dock
There is a kidnapper drone and three guards in this area. Climb the ladder in front of you and try to pick off the soldiers with your M1911A1 without alerting the kidnapper drone.
With the soldiers out of the way, go back down to the lower level and sneak over to the stairs in the southwest corner of the map.
Avoid being spotted by the kidnapper drone and make your way up the stairs to the next area.
Rooftop
There is another kidnapper drone along with a few soldiers in this area. Head west along the north side of the rooftop until you see a soldier patrolling ahead of you. Wait for him to turn his back and then take him out with CQC. Now, turn your attention to the kidnapper drone that is hovering between the north and south sections of the roof. Use your M1911A1 to shoot it down and then shoot the two soldiers on the south side that come to investigate the explosion.
Hop down and climb up the ladder on the other side to reach the south section of the roof. Take out the soldier patrolling just inside the building, then go east to find another prisoner at the end of the hall. Rescue the prisoner before heading west to the next area to complete the mission.
Mission 24: Head to the Control Tower
Put on the Battle Dress so you can take two rocket launchers and the M60 with you on this mission.
Rooftop
No need for stealth here since the enemy now knows you have infiltrated their base. Head east out of the building and go to the ladder. Pull out your M60 and shoot the kidnapper drones and soldiers on the north side of the rooftop.
Cross over to the north side of the rooftop and kill the remaining soldiers before heading east to the next area.
Small Maintenance Dock
Turn Auto Aim on and kill all the enemies in your path as you make your way north to the next area.
NOTE: You can still pat down the enemies you take out as long as they have the “red skull” marker above their body.
Main Maintenance Dock
Getting though this area is like running a gantlet. Try to dodge the rockets and sniper fire as you run and gun your way north through the trench.
When you reach the end of the trench, hop up the step and look west to find a prisoner. Rescue the prisoner then go under the steel door to the next area.
Underpass
The enemies try to shoot you from behind in this area. Run in a zig-zag pattern and use the camera buttons to look behind you so you can better avoid the rockets.
Continue north along the trench until you come to the two soldiers at the end. Take out the soldiers with your M60 then hop out of the trench and head to east towards the elevator.
Take the elevator to the next area.
Heliport
There is a helicopter and a bunch of soldiers in this area. Kill all the soldiers with your M60 but watch out for the incoming missiles fired by the helicopter. With the soldiers out of the way, you can use your rocket launchers to take out the helicopter.
Once you’ve downed the helicopter, the gate to the north will open up and more soldiers will come out. Switch back to your M60 and take out anyone in your way as you move north.
Go through the gate to trigger a cutscene and complete the mission.
Mission 25: Peace Walker Battle 2
Wear the Battle Dress and equip two rocket launchers, the M60, Supply Markers, Strike Markers and plenty or recovery items for this mission.
The Peace Walker is equipped with missiles, flamethrowers, S mines, drill missiles, a radiation beam, and an electromagnetic field that, when active, will repulse incoming rockets.
At the start of the battle you will have about one minute to prevent Peace Walker from launching a nuke. Pull out a rocket launcher and fire at Peace Walker’s AI cylinder. Peace Walker will begin targeting you with missile volleys so get ready to dodge but keep in mind that you don’t have time to waste. Dodge the missiles and return fire in between volleys.
After taking four or five direct hits, Peace Walker will abort the launch and go into defense mode. Keep dodging attacks and firing rockets at the AI cylinder.
Eventually, Peace Walker will jump into the water and go into nuclear launch mode again. When this happens, run right up to it and place a Strike Marker underneath it. Call in the strike as soon you reach a safe distance. With good placement, you should be able to deal Peace Walker enough damage to make it abort the launch sequence.
Continue firing at the AI cylinder whenever you can get a clear shot. If Peace Walker powers up its electromagnetic field, switch to your M60 and keep attacking. Use your Support Markers to bring in extra supplies when you run out of ammo.
Whenever Peace Walker attempts to launch the nuke, try to place a Strike Marker underneath it and call in a missile strike. If you run out of Strike Markers or Peace Walker is too far away, fire two or three rockets directly at its AI cylinder to get it to abort the sequence.
When you manage to get Peace Walker’s health down to one bar, a cutscene will trigger. After the cutscene, the AI cylinder will open up and give you access to the Mammal Pod. Remove all of the AI components within the Mammal Pod to complete the mission.
Mission 26: Peace Walker Battle 3
Take rocket launchers and the M60 with you for this mission.
All you have to do here is attack the now feeble Peace Walker. It doesn’t matter where you shoot, just unload on it with rockets or the M60 until the cutscene triggers.
After the cutscene, finish watching the credits and you will be notified that Paz and Dr. Strangelove have joined your team.
Congratulations! You’ve just beat Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker!
