Call of Duty: Ghosts – Extinction has a unique set of rules. At the start of the game, players will want to pick up the drill. After picking up the drill, look for an orange “HARVEST” icon on the screen. You’ll find a mass of alien tentacles and pods at this point. Place the drill there by pulling the right trigger and then aliens will start attacking.

The aliens come in a few different shapes and sizes. The most common is the smallest alien type, and they are also the easiest to kill and present the least dangerous of a threat. There are “spitter” aliens that have large tails and are ranged-based attackers. Then there are huge, armored aliens that are especially difficult to battle and require teamwork.

When enough alien masses of gunk have been destroyed by the drill, the game will lead you to the next section. The next section will be blocked by an even larger mass until the helicopter comes to destroy it. The goal at this point is to protect the helicopter from the aliens while it destroys the crap so that you can continue into the next area and keep repeating the process until you’ve finished the mode.

Along the way, you will earn points from killing aliens and successfully protecting the drill and helicopter. These points can be spent by pressing the equivalent of the “select” button on whatever controller that you’re using. They are then used to upgrade the different types of classes that you have equipped, the different weapons that you have equipped, and whatever else that you have at your disposal.

Ammunition is gained by spawning and then using ammo boxes, or finding it from the various containers left lying around the levels. These containers can be opened easily by “searching” them. Turrets and traps are also found throughout the level that can be used for a price (you also earn cash for playing the game). Turrets are almost always useless, but the electric traps pack quite the punch.

Like Zombies, guns can be found lying around the levels, and they also can be purchased using the cash that you earn from playing the game. If a teammate goes down, it is imperative that they be revived because if all the people on your team go down, then it is game over.

There are numerous classes and weapon types available in Extinction, but not all of them are unlocked from the start. Each of the classes, items, and whatever else here can be upgraded numerous times in-game, so that subsequent playthroughs of Extinction gradually become easier and easier as your character is improved.

Players earn XP when playing the mode online, and that XP in turn allows them to level up and unlock even more to use.

CLASS
=====
There are four different classes in the game. The default class is Weapon Specialist and it is unlocked right at the start of the game. There are three other classes that accompany it, which are unlocked at the following levels:

Tank – 3
Engineer – 5
Medic – 10

After unlocking the other classes, you can equip them and level them up just like the Weapon Specialist class. Each class can be leveled up four times, which improves the class in numerous ways. Those upgrades are detailed under each class section below.

PISTOL TYPES
===========
Pistols are one of the main tools in Extinction. You will always have a pistol on you, though you can get up to three weapons carried at a time. There is a default pistol and then three other pistols after that which are unlocked at the following levels:

.44 Magnum Pistol – 7
M9A1 Pistol – 13
MP-443 Grach Pistol – 16

Like everything else in Extinction, the pistols can be upgraded.

There are different types of ammo in the game that can be given to teammates. All of these ammo based abilities are designated to the “up” d-pad button. There are five tiers of this, so you have one unlocked at default and then the other four must be unlocked by leveling up and hitting the following levels:
