Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is the second Donkey Kong game from
Retro Games, and the first for Wii U. This game is notoriously challenging,
especially when it comes to the boss fights. This guide is meant to help you
defeat all of the bosses in the game.

A major tip when it comes to the boss fights…whenever there are enemies
involved that aren’t actually the main boss that you’re battling with, you
can use the banana power move to turn them all into helpful items. Dixie Kong
is the best to use for this as she will turn them into golden hearts which
gives you extra hits that you can take in the battle.

To utilize the super move, you first have to have a full banana bar, which is
the meter near your hearts. Fill this meter by collecting bananas. Use it by
pushing L and R together with a partner on your back. If playing co-op, you
will have to be on each other’s back (press ZR to grab your friend as Donkey
Kong), and then have the person playing on the GamePad press L and R and the
person using a Wii remote press A simultaneously to activate the move.

Island: Lost Mangroves

This boss is a giant seal. He will at first try to knock you down by sliding
right at you. Jump on his back. The seal will then go into the water and
start shooting green fish at you that will flop around until you jump on them
and get them out of there.

The seal returns to the half pipe. Jump on him again. Then he will throw more
fish at you, including sea urchins that you can’t jump on, so just avoid those.
Jump on his back again when he gets into the halfpipe, though he may mix things
up by rolling, in which case jump over him and wait for him to return to his
usual slide.

The seal will then have his penguin friends try to crush you. Avoid them, and
you can jump on them for bananas and hearts if you need them. The seal will
continue his usual round of attacks, and you are to just jump on his back
like always.

Finally, near the end, he will try to jump on you and crush you by himself.
Avoid this and jump on his back to end him.

Island: Autumn Heights

A giant owl is the boss in Autumn Heights. At first, he will spray his feathers
at you. As they come towards you, the gap between them will increase, giving
you plenty of space to go through to avoid being hit by any of the feathers.

The owl will then spin around at the top of the screen and drop eggs. Wait for
the eggs to hatch, then jump on one and pick them up. Throw it at the owl, and
then pick up the other ones if you can and use them to continue to hit the
owl.

The owl will eventually retreat, at which point you are to jump into the
barrel and follow him. The owl will then start spraying you with a gust of
wind meant to knock you off the stage. Some smaller owls will fly at you as
well.

Jump on the first bird that has an egg on its head and pick him up. Then use
the next row of enemies to jump up high enough to throw the enemy at the
owl and knock him down from his position near the top of the screen.

The owl has a couple of attacks. If you fail to hit him twice with the birds
wearing the egg shells on their head, then he will dash across the screen and
try to hit you. You can duck to avoid being hit by this attack, or you can
interrupt it by throwing an enemy at him.

His other attack at this stage is where he strafes from left to right from
the top of the screen, dropping feathers at you. You can avoid the feathres by
jumping off the platform into one of the two barrels. The barrels WILL respawn
so you don’t have to worry about them disappearing.

Finally, the owl will go to a third stage. Follow him with the barrel again.
He will do his usual feather attack, but then send a group of his smaller
birds at you, dropping onto the platform in a sort of Space Invaders formation.
The birds with the yellow helmets are to be avoided as they will just hurt you
if you jump on them, but the eggshell birds can be jumped on and thrown at the
big owl.

The big owl will also throw icy spike balls at you, plus launch a bunch of
eggs at you, including a giant one, which will include the big owl himself.
Avoid being hit by these, and then the big owl will be dazed upon landing,
allowing you to jump on his head and deal damage without having to use one
of the eggs.

4. Triple Trouble

Island: Bright Savannah

Baboons! Three baboons will swing at you with ropes. When they have hammers,
you have to avoid them. When their feet are in the air and their butt is
exposed, jump on his legs/butt to damage it.

The baboons will then drop to the ground and start spinning at you. Avoid
these attacks and then they will be dazed, once again with their feet in the
air and leaving them wide open to an attack.

Now you only have to deal with two baboons. The baboons will climb on the
poles on either side of the screen and start throwing bombs at you. Spiked
bombs are to be avoided, but the green bombs can be picked up and tossed at
them to deal damage.

The baboons will then try to jump on you. When they try to do a front flip,
they will land on their head and once again be feet up in the air, so you
can jump on them.

The baboon will then create two clones and hang down in the center of the
area and throw bombs at you. Avoid the spiked bombs and throw the green bombs
at the baboon. The clone baboons will then start swinging like they did at the
beginning of the fight, and you can jump on them to get hearts and bananas and
the like.

5. Fugu Face-Off
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
Island: Sea Breeze Cove

This battle is against Fugu the puffer fish. This battle takes place entirely
underwater, so you kind of have to keep an eye on your oxygen meter, but there
are plenty of ways to get oxygen so it shouldn’t become too big of a problem
in the grand scheme of things. You can get oxygen from doing damage to Fugu,
from the bubbles that rise through the stage, and through the bananas that
are also encased in bubbles that you can collect.

Fugu will try to suck you in, so swim against this, dashing as necessary.
Then Fugu will breath in a bunch of water and grow to immense size. He will
then float around the stage and try to hit you with his spikes. Swim to the
part of him that doesn’t have spikes and dash into it to deal damage.

Fugu will then add some more elements to his attacks, such as shooting out
enemies at you before he rolls around the stage and allows you to attack
him. These enemies can be avoided a lot like the owl’s feathers from earlier;
they will leave gaps that you can utilize, though they will ricochet off the
walls and things.

Another thing to keep in mind is the stage itself. You want to be very careful
while swimming because the outer rim of this stage is covered in spikes.
These spikes will also deal damage to you, so they are to be avoided at all
costs.

Fugu will then grow to his largest size, covering up a very large portion of
the screen. He will float slowly up and down, left to right, and try to crush
you. He gives you a pretty good idea of which direction he is going, and he is
pretty slow because he is so large, so it’s not too hard to avoid his attacks.

The green fish that he spits out at you can be knocked back at him. Dash into
them and they will be knocked into Fugu, and even if they hit a part of him
that is covered in spikes, they will deal damage.

The spikes that cover the outer rim of the stage will start to rise through the
top of the level, and Fugu will also become much faster and he will start to
swim in a diagonal pattern, making it more difficult to get to his spike free
side to deal damage. I recommend utilizing the green fish at this point for
sure to make sure you can hit him without risking your health too much.

6. Punch Bowl

Island: Juicy Jungle

This battle is against the Coca-Cola polar bear. Or at least, it looks a hell
of a lot like the Coca-Cola polar bear. With a big spiked hammer, of course.
The first thing you’ll want to do is go all the way to the left of the ice
platform. He will swing the hammer down, but you should be able to just barely
avoid it.

Then you can jump on the top part of the hammer if you need a boost, or just
jump directly on top of his head. The polar bear will then have some new
moves such as knocking ice blocks at you. The ice blocks contain various
helpful items, such as hearts, bananas, and bombs.

In order to smash the ice, jump on top of an ice block and then do the ground
pound attack. To do this, press the button you do to roll, except make sure
you aren’t moving at all when you push the button.

Throw the bombs at the polar and keep doing this until he introduces yet
another new attack. Keep an eye on the sky as columns of ice blocks will fall
onto the platform. Use these to jump over the polar bear as he spins across
the platform. He will then get dizzy and you can jump on his head. Later when
you need to do this, he will sometimes NOT spin, which means he will not get
dizzy at the end of the attack, so don’t get tricked by that.

Another attack that the polar bear uses is when he spikes you from the top of
the level. Little snowflakes can be seen at the top of the screen where he will
be coming from, so that is how you can avoid it. When he lands, waves of ice
shards will come at you, so you can avoid them. Be sure to jump right before
the polar bear lands as well because him landing on the platform while your
feet are on it will stun you and you that can sometimes make you slide backward
into him and take damage.

The columns of ice will become larger, but the polar bear will now have two
ways to hit him. You can use the bombs in the ice to damage him (though not
all the ice columns will have bombs), and you can also avoid his hammer
attack like you did at the beginning whenever he does that attack and jump on
his head.

The polar bear will also knock the ice blocks and turn them into speeding ice
bullets. Be very quick on the jump button at this part. Watch the polar bear’s
feet because if his foot moves, that means he’s just going to kick them slowly
at you, but if he spins his hammer, that means he’s about to knock an ice
bullet at you.

Island: Donkey Kong Island

This it…THE FINAL BATTLE! And buckle up because this one is a freaking doozy
of a boss fight!

Right at the start, the Walrus King retreats to the background. He shoots a
bunch of ice balls at you, three of which have enemies. There will be one on
either far side of the platform, and then one in the center. Pick up one of
the enemies and then try to be directly across from the Walrus King. Kind of
walk back and forth and match his movements. He will then eventually taunt
you, which is your opportunity to chuck the enemy at him (just throw normally),
which will hit him and bait him over to the platform with you.

Before I continue, there are numerous strategies that can be employed using
those enemies that the Walrus King shoots at you. If you are a smaller
character, like Dixie or Diddy, when you pick up enemies, they will be held
out in front of you. So you can just run into another enemy and that will
cause a heart to appear.

If you’re Donkey Kong, he will pick the enemies up over his head. This means
that if you want the heart, you will have to pick up one of the smaller
enemies, and then let the rabbit enemy jump over your head. Move underneath
the rabbit purposefully so that he lands right on the enemy that Donkey is
holding. This will get you a heart. The good thing about this is that it
still leaves one of the enemies left over for you to throw at the Walrus
King.

If you have your banana power full, it is also possible to turn them into
gold hearts. Yeah, it kind of sucks only getting three gold hearts, especially
playing in co-op, but it’s definitely better than nothing. Not only that,
but the Walrus King will just spit out three more enemies endlessly until
you eventually hit him, so there is little risk to this strategy, unless you
are bad at dodging the ice balls.

After hitting the Walrus King, he will jump to your platform and charge at you
in an attempt to hit you with his horns. Your goal here is to jump up and
time it just right to land on his back. This fight is easiest with Dixie,
by the way, as is the rest of the game, if you haven’t figured that out by
now…

Unfortunately for those playing in co-op, this part can be EXTREMELY hard
unless the co-op player is on Donkey’s back so that only one player is
controlling the action. The reason for this is that landing on his back causes
the Walrus King to swing his head up, which means that the second player is
likely to get stabbed, even if they jump simultaneously.

So the best way to go about this fight in co-op is to have the two players be
separate for most of the time (especially since lava is an instant kill so
that you have a chance to come back if only one player falls in the lava…),
but then have the second player get on Donkey Kong’s back during the Walrus
King’s charging sections.

You get three chances to land on his back, and this is where you deal damage
to him. He will drop hearts if you need them, as well as bananas and banana
coins if you are already full on hearts. What he does after you land on him
will be different depending on which stage you’re at in the fight.

In the early stages, he will jump into the air and attempt to crush you. The
way to deal with this is to jump from one platform to the next. He will be
tricked into wasting all of his butt bounces on one platform at a time instead
of launching himself across to try to crush you or force you off into the
lava.

If the Walrus King does corner you, there is a way to get past him. As soon
as he lands, start rolling towards him, and then jump as he jumps in the
air. If done properly, you should sail right underneath him and land safely
on the other side where the platforms aren’t being crushed into the lava.

Walrus King will of course change his attack pattern up. As you continue to
do damage to him, he will add another attack with his horn before sending
the enemies after you. What he does is shoot ice dragons into the air that
will then fall from the sky onto the platforms. It’s easy to tell where they
are going to fall from because there are snowflakes that you can see falling
from the top of the screen.

When these ice dragons hit the platform, it covers it in ice. This means
that you now have to deal with the slippery surface, but it shouldn’t be
too difficult as long as you avoid getting too close to the edge and going at
too high of speeds.

The Walrus King will then start slamming himself into the platforms and
raising them high into the air with lava. To avoid falling into the lava and
dying instantly, just stay still and watch the platforms. They will start to
shake violently, so go to the ones that aren’t shaking so much. They will then
fall back into the lava one at a time, and the trick is to jump from the last
remaining platform so that you land below on one that has already fell into
the lava and has come back up.

The Walrus King becomes extremely dangerous near the end of the fight. He
will bring his horn with him to the platform and do this really difficult to
dodge move where he shoots the ice dragons directly at you. For the first
time he does this, he will ALWAYS shoot a “high” dragon, which means you should
crouch to avoid taking damage. The dragons then alternate between high and
low. Avoid the low dragons by jumping over them, and avoid the high dragons
by crouching.

The Walrus King will ALWAYS charge at you IMMEDIATELY after he fires out the
last dragon, so be very quick on the jump button to avoid being hit and
hopefully dealing damage to him. It is possible to end the fight in these
segments since you essentially get six chances to damage him (the initial
dodge plus the ice dragons), but if not, he has one more trick up his
sleeve…

The Walrus King’s most powerful attack is where he charges up and shoots a
giant ice dragon at you that goes at immense speed. It’s usually one that you
can dodge by crouching, but be ready for anything, and try to be near the
far edge of the platform so that you have a chance to figure out what he is
shooting at you and also have enough time to react to the threat in an
appropriate fashion.
