"Then Now Wow" at the Minnesota History Center turns history into a playground. Sure, there are plenty of text panels and photographs that explain everything from European immigration onto the Great Plains to the recent arrival of Somali refugees. But my three kids bypassed the fine print to run through the sod house and climb the grain elevator. Then they got sweaty "pulling" a plow on a treadmill.Who wants to read when you're at a playground?"Then Now Wow," which opened this fall, is the History Center's most recent permanent exhibit and its largest to date. It reflects the museum's effort to please young visitors who increasingly expect to be entertained even as they learn.

"We've always tried to make exhibits family-friendly," said museum director Dan Spock. "But this is the first exhibit where we've taken it all the way."We know now about what kids like and don't like," he added. "We know kids like freedom to explore, but they hate guided tours where they feel trapped. This is engaging and physical and interactive."The exhibit complements the state's history curriculum and was built to appeal to teachers and students on field trips as well as kids who come with their families. Rather than organize themes chronologically, Minnesota's past and present is explored by region: the prairies, the forests, the cities. Bow Wow uses Facebook to address the recent court ruling in a lawsuit in which former French Porn Star Celine Tran (a.k.a. Katsumi) was awarded $79,000 in a suit against him for unauthorized use of video footage of her dancing.
