The internet started out in the 1960s as a research project of American military agencies to build robust, fault-tolerant, and distributed computer networks. It was estimated in 2009 that a quarter of the world's population are internet users. After more than 50 years, it is still being used for communicating but has now also become a lifestyle which is present in most parts of the globe. It was primarily used for communicating purposes and the ways of using it for communication expanded. Heck! Its use and purpose has expanded! Aside from communication, it is currently being used for research, shopping, and entertainment aside from communication.
Speaking of entertainment, one way to entertain oneself online is by playing games. And a popular audience has been reached and has embraced online games. Most children are now engrossed in playing online games so many companies have endeavored on creating virtual world for kids. But is the popularity of online games a good or bad thing?
Although most companies, aside from benefitting financially, aim to entertain children, there are still some disadvantages when kids play online games. These internet-accessed games could affect their school performance, physical health, and face-to-face social interactions. Also, some rude and more mature players may influence them. What's worse is that it could develop into an addiction.
There are a lot of things which could let children end up performing poorly in schools. One such thing is online games. Hours may be spent more on playing instead of studying. Their attention during lectures may also be diverted into thinking about their favorite games. Then, sitting in front of the computer for a long period of time may affect their eyesight. The loud volume of the sound effects when not kept at a minimal or moderate volume could affect their hearing. Also, the lack of exercise could affect their body. They may also develop psychological and social disorders because it could lead them into having the idea that socializing involves them typing away in front of a computer monitor. A grave case of introversion is not a good thing. Finally, games containing mature content might corrupt their innocent minds. Usually, these mature games are played by mature gamers so it might not be a good virtual environment for young people. Children are in the growing stage so being badly influenced could affect their ethical and mental development.
But parents or guardians should not fret since your guidance is still the sole key in order for these children not to go astray when playing online games. You could implement gaming curfew. If all else fail, try placing a password on the computers or laptops they're using. Also, not all online games aim to just entertain children. There are also educational games for children that are safe and beneficial. It's like hitting two birds with one stone. Colorful and graphical online games could enhance their creativity and imagination. Virtual world for kids also have in-game moderators so that game play will be monitored. No cursing here! Just pure wholesome fun!
