So, you’re a master of the Arcane, are you? Or maybe you prefer fire or frost? The mage is a complicated class, and that’s why you will want to read this Mage Leveling Guide before you get too far in the leveling process. It’s easy to make some mistakes, but it’s better to learn from others trials and errors.
Mage Leveling Guide Part 1: Mage Leveling Spec
There is some debate over which spec to choose for mages. Some prefer fire, others arcane, but most generally, frost is the preferred mage leveling spec. There are a number of benefits to leveling a frost mage. For one, their use of freeze, chill and slowing effects greatly enhance your survivability and leveling abilities. Also, having a water elemental to take some of the damage for you is a great advantage in staying alive. I prefer a 6/2/33 build for maximum mana efficiency, survivability, and minimal downtime. The mana regen from Enduring Winter is great for groups or solo, and reducing downtime. Frost also has some excellent AoE abilities, making it a great farming spec, and a good dungeon spec. Fire is also excellent for AoE, but unless you have a tank soaking up damage, it’s best to AoE with Frost. Frost is overall best for solo questing, which is going to be where you will be doing the bulk of your leveling. Instances are great as well, but you don’t want to spend your entire time inside, and you will have longer queue times since you can’t tank or heal.
Mage Leveling Guide Part 2: Gear
Mages can only use cloth armor. You can equip staves, one handed swords, maces, daggers, and off-hand frill items. Intellect and stamina are your friends. Intellect increases your overall mana, and stamina increases your overall health. At higher levels you will start seeing more and more gear with hit, crit, and spell power. These stats are all beneficial and will increase your mana efficiency. No, your spells don’t cost any less, but they will be stronger, so you don’t have to cast as many spells. Spirit helps some too, but is mostly a healer’s stat. You will get most of your mana regeneration from eating and drinking. One final tip on gear: Don’t buy it. Quest, dungeon or craft your gear, but never waste your money on the auction house while you are leveling.
Mage Leveling Guide Part 3: Professions
Most people will tell you to stay away from crafting professions and just stick to gathering. There are some advantages to this. They are highly profitable, offer experience bonuses for collecting, and have some bonus stats and abilities which can aid you in combat. Herbalism also offers a healing and haste ability which is great since mages don’t normally have any other healing abilities, aside from conjured items, which cannot be used in combat. Most people tell you to avoid crafting professions because they can be expensive to level up. However if you are using a good WoW Gold Guide like I did, you shouldn’t have any issues with money, and power leveling tailoring, enchanting, jewelcrafting, inscription, or alchemy are all recommended. They are all potentially profitable, and offer you some great gear and enhancements while leveling your mage.
That is your basic Mage Leveling Guide. I hope that what you’ve read helps you on your way to level 85. Let me know what you think by leaving a comment with your favorite class and leveling spec.
