Blizzard recently announced a new expansion that will allow us to slay Deathwing in the next patch. I'm personally excited because this will be the end of current WoW raiding content, thursting us into the next phase of raiding. They will be releasing the expansion different from the past in that all raiding content for the push will be available to players from day one.
Bizzard is looking for new ways to give players raiding content in general. For example the frist Cataclysm patch didn't have any raid bosses and they're looking to ensure the next expansion will come chocked full of raiding content. They want all the raid bosses for the Deathwing raid to be available when released, which is different then the first Cataclysm expansion release. With that push, they slowly released raid content.
This will be a core change at Blizzard and I feel it's for the best. Releasing all the Deathwing content at launch, combined with Blizzards drive to release new content at a faster rate, means that they must release content in a timely manner to keep player interest. I personally didn't mind the trickle strategy employed with Wrath of the Lich King. Honestly as long as they kept with trying to release new expansions quicker, I would still prefer the trickle strategy over releasing all the raid mobs at once. I really can't explain why, but I end up liking the feel of not knowing what's ahead.
In reality Blizzard is going to have to implement a strategy to keep players interested long term. With big name released over the next handful of months such as Star Wars the Old Republic and Guild Wars 2, I wouldn't be surprised if World of Warcraft will be a back burner game for most gamers. I know it will be hard for me to click the WoW icon when I have the STWOR icon sitting right next to it.
Maybe - just maybe with raid content for a given encounter being released all at once, it may keep people interested. That is until they clear the content and find themselves wanting something to do while they wait for the next content update.
World of Warcraft just might be able to stay afloat and keep a majority of its player base by releasing content quicker than in the past.
