If you've been looking for a Lord of the Rings Card Game, there's a few different types and styles out there. I specifically wanted to highlight the Lord of the Rings Living Card Game (LCG).
Don't freak at the term LCG. There's nothing complicated about it. All that means is that as time goes on there will be expansion packs that add to the game. In the case of this game there are extra expansion packs for it that include new heroes and quests to run.
So, what is the Lord of the Rings LCG? It's a cooperative card game set in the LOTR universe and takes place before Frodo and Sam set out on their epic adventure. In the game you will build a player deck of heroes, allies, attachments and events in order to survive the current quest and take out your enemies. You can run this game with 1-4 players.
There's plenty of popular heroes and types to build your decks out of. There's the big names like Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli. There's also a number of different elves, dwarves, rohan and gondor heroes to choose from.
Player cards are divided by 4 different spheres (or colors). Some of the spheres are more combat related and some of them are more sphere related. When you first start this game it's probably best to just use the starter decks that are all built from one sphere. After you spend some time in the game, you will want to have 2 or 3 spheres in your player deck.
The enemies you face and the goals you need to accomplish will change depending on what quests you run. For example, the first quest has you in a spider cave trying to fight your way out. The next quest has you fight a hill troll and then escape down the Anduin river as enemies stack up to ambush you at the end. The last quest of the starter set sees one of your heroes get kidnapped and you have to fight to get him back.
This game is at its most fun when you're teaming up with your friends to get through these quests. After the first one, there's basically no mercy on the game's part. It's extremely challenging, which can be a bit frustrating, but it's also very rewarding when you finally win as a team. You feel like you accomplished something.
I really recommend you try this game if you're looking for something different to do in the LOTR universe. Lord of the Rings LCG is a unique, challenging and ever expanding game that any fan of the franchise would enjoy.
