So... I had a random thought that has been stuck in my head for a few weeks now.. and I figured I'd share it finally. This is being written off the assumption that people have heard and/or played Call of Duty. Now I understand that CoD has always been an accessible arcade shooter, but where have the strategic planning of maneuvering around areas to tag and bag your enemies? I was going to take a shot at realism for the game, but as I just said... the multiplayer was designed as an Arcade type shooter. Last I'd check I don't see soldiers in the army running head-first with a sniper rifle and using it as if it were an single shot assault rifle. But back to my original thought, where has the Tactics gone?
Small example, I played in Ghost Recon's beta a little while back.. and I have to say it was an amazing experience. You could duck around corners, have UAV trackers, you had 3 different classes and abilities to choose from, nice environments, multiple entries to get closer to your enemy and/or capture objectives. The list can go on and on, but it felt wonderful to play a Tactical shooter again. Things were wonderful until the plague set in...the Call of Duty plague. Instead of moving as a group, you have many people lone wolfing it. Were there any type of communications to mark out the opposition and move accordingly? No...that is absent. I even saw some trying to do some quickscoping and all I could really think was "really?".
Mind you, I still do fairly well in most of these matches, normally sitting in 1st or 2nd place on my team (winning or losing), but I have that feeling like it's not really satisfying anymore. Ever since Modern warfare 2.. it's like the plague has spread into most gamer's minds. It's also because of that no one communicates for a tactic oriented game. Here is the base tactics for any shooter, rush, kill people, probably die somewhere along the line, rinse in repeat. Also, the other tactic being to camp in this one spot and wait for the enemy players to roam around to that spot. Now, am I bashing those 2 generic tactics? no.. however when you are in a TEAM oriented game, I would expect the TEAM to work TOGETHER. If that was the case they could of popped in a free for all match and let the others who want to work in a group. Game-modes like Team-Deatchmatch are understandable, but other games like Capture the flag, or Domination types where they require team-work.. still it seems the CoD plague prevails on all fronts of FPSs.
Final Opinion on Tactics Dying in First/Third person shooters:
Tactics are seemingly non-existent in games now and days. Correct me if i'm wrong, but for Xbox 360 users... mics come as a standard. alot of the time you see people without them, or with them on and just stay within their own clicks. That's fine.. I'm somewhat guilty of it myself.. but on the other hand.. for Tactical shooters.. I would expect the team to rely information back to me. I didn't walk in to be a one man army like I've been forced to do over the years. Don't get me wrong, I've honed my skills to where I'll be fine without the team helping, but still.. doesn't hurt to have some tactics or something planned as a team.
