A little head start for all those interested in knowing everything that is going to be released in the field of video gaming and is connected to "A Game of Thrones".
After finishing work in the RTS game A Game of Thrones - Genesis, Cyanide is turning to developing of RPG video game based on the same book. Publisher is supposed to be Altus, and release is planned for PS3, Xbow 360, and PC's. HBO plans to share video material with developers, so series will parallel the game. Let us all hope that Cyanide will make better work with the RPG than he did with the RTS.
Bigpoint ( Battlestar Galactica Online) is developing a free to play massively multiplayer online role playing game based on A Game of Thrones and ASoIaF universe. It is still in development and expected release date is late 2012.
There is also a thrones based social networking game. It is described as Farmville comes to Westeros. So I guess facebook will newer be the same:)
Well, what can I say, only time will tell if these are good news. For now, we have half decent product from Cyanide, and guess they can only get better, and if they don't it will be a shame. As HBO clearly showed, entire series have great potential to be translated to different media.
Again I'm returning to the point that franchise don't have liberty to make wrong choices. After Cyanides A Game of Thrones - Genesis, there is slim chance that some other developer will try to make RTS based on A Game of Thrones, which, in my opinion, has great potential in that exact field in gaming.
Even bigger question are games played over the internet. George RR Martin has great fandom, and there are some great forums arguing all sort of stuff connected to ASoIaF. They all, including myself, eagerly await opportunity to step in the shoes of one of characters from the books, and start to play their favored game over internet. And that puts great pressure on developer not to make some half done take-money-while-its-popular product.
For the closing I must say that HBO series is only product which can compare with the original. With increasing popularity there will be more stuff connected to Martins books. Since I love entire franchise, any degrading of it only to earn some more bucks is unacceptable. And I must put all my trust into George RR Martin and his ability to protect his work.
