Dear me, what is poor fan of George RR Martins books to do between his next work and second season of HBO series? To play games based on his books off course! And if you don't know of any I will be more than happy to oblige.
A Game of Thrones RIP, ughh, I mean RPG:
Unfortunately this story borrowed it's destiny from one of Martins books. It was produced by Guardians of Order in 2006, featured two RPG systems: d20 and Tri-stat dX system. It even won several ENnie awards, but, soon after the release of the product (and only 2500 copies were made), Guardians of Order folded, and this RPG game never came to life.
A poker of STARKS…
Another product based on A Game of Thrones, actually on entire series of A Song of Ice and Fire, is a collectable card game with the same name. It was released in 2002 by Fantasy Flight Games, and is still ongoing, with tournaments organized by group of volunteers called a Night's Watch and sanctioned by FFG. Great houses from the books are factions in the game, with different strengths and weaknesses. To play you must build two customized decks of cards, one a 7 card plot deck, and another 60+ card draw deck.
Better than Stratego - Thronego!?
Fantasy Flight Games released another product based on A Son of Ice and Fire at year 2003 - A Game of Thrones board game. It is played on the map of Westeros divided in several regions. The victory condition is to control most of the cities and strongholds on the map at the end of the game. After the original game two expansions were released - A Clash of Kings in 2004, and A Storm of Swords in 2006.
And finally…
A Game of Thrones - Genesis. Developed by Cyanide, and released in September 2011, it is the latest of games set in A Song of Ice and Fire. A real time fantasy video game, first of it's kind. The game events are set 1000 years prior to those described in books. With two modes of play - Versus and Campaign, and four facets: diplomacy, military, economic and underhand, it has variety of options for players. Gameplay focuses on capturing nodes rather than using brute force against opponents, goal is to win Iron Throne by amassing "prestige" within the game.
Stuff to follow - Success of the HBO series and bestseller position of George RR Martins books ensures that there will be more games and other stuff connected to the franchise, but until something new turns up these should be enough to make waiting for next book or new season more bearable.
