Blizzard entertainment will introduce tokens to World of Warcraft which players can use to buy in-game gold with real money, and game time with in-game gold. Word that Blizzard was considering a tokens-for-time option for World of Warcraft first came to light late last year, when Community Manager revealed that the studio was looking at ways to make life more convenient for the players, like our WoW items. Today it confirmed that the system is on the way in the form of WoW Tokens.
The WoW Token was created to give players with lots of extra gold the option to use it to help cover their subscription cost, and give those who want to purchase gold a way to do so from fellow players through a secure, easy-to-use system. The Token will be making its debut in an upcoming patch—in the meantime, which is a new in-game item that allows players to simply and securely exchange gold and game time between each other.Meanwhile, it opens up a new kind of payment option for World of Warcraft players, and it will also help lead to fewer account compromises and a better game experience overall.
Players will be able to purchase a WoW Token through the in-game Shop for real money, and then sell it on the Auction House for gold at the current market price. When a player buys a WoW Token from the Auction House for gold, the Token becomes Soulbound, and the player can then redeem it for 30 days of game time.
Each region—Americas (including Australia and New Zealand, for some reason), Europe, Taiwan, Korea, and China—will have its own Token exchange. There will be no deposits required, nor will the Auction House take a cut from sales.
But WoW Tokens can be sold for gold only once, after which they become Soulbound and can only be redeemed for game time. Blizzard said the system will give wealthy players something to do with the fortunes they've amassed, but more importantly it will enable players to acquire gold without having to go through third-party gold sellers, which it said are "one of the primary sources of account compromises."
Some indicated that it is highly reminiscent of EVE’s PLEX online, which effectively allows the game’s most proficient and wealthy players to use their gold to pay for their subscriptions.
Blizzard also claimed that This is a fairly major step for World of Warcarft, one that will drastically reduce the cost of the game for the most die-hard players while giving less-committed or experience players a fast way to acquire the gold they need to pay for many of the perks associated with higher-level characters, which also mean far less grinding.
Even so, it's a huge shift for Blizzard. World of Warcraft has been running on a subscription-only model for ten years, so any change seems relatively huge in that context. Blizzard didn't indicate when WoW Tokens will go live, saying only that they'll be rolled out in an "upcoming patch." More details will be revealed "at a later date," . We will keep monitoring the updates and news for the WoW Token. By the way, do not miss out the WoW BOE Item on our website!
