The purpose of this article is to help people from preventing the yellow light of death from happening to their Playstation 3. The Yellow Light of Death simply means that there is a hardware failure with your PS3. These are not full proof measures but they help to prevent the problem from happening. These are simple but effective ways of preventing your PS3 from encountering this problem, and what to do if you have this problem.
Step 1:Make sure your Playstation 3 is on a surface where it is able to clearly release air and breath. If the fan isn’t able to release air then it might overheat. If it overheats it will usually shut itself off to cool down. There have, however, been rare occurrences when it didn’t shut itself down. This has lead to the yellow light of death. A good surface to keep your Playstation on is a table. I wouldn’t recommend the floor, as the ps3 fan might capture dust and small lint from the carpet. A wooden floor works too. Make sure you clean the surface your Playstation is on so it doesn’t collect a lot of dust into the fan.
Step 2: Clean out your fan every now and then to prevent build-up. A clean fan allows it to circulate more air and prevent the PS3 from overheating. You don’t need to open up your Playstation or anything. A simple low power vacuum would work. I wouldn’t recommend doing the fan test method because that could mess up the PS3, and it has been confirmed by Sony that it is not a good idea. Cleaning your fan also increases the performance of your system, so it is a good idea to clean in every once in a while.
Step 3: If you don’t need to have it on, turn it off. It helps not to always have it on even though for the most part it is safe, you might never know when that was the day it decided to have an issue ang get the YLOD. The slim, albeit rarer than the other models, can also get the YLOD, so if you have a slim, you can use these methods as well to prevent this from happening. In the event your PS3 already has the YLOD and your warranty has expired. You can take measures to fix it yourself if you want to save some money and not send it in when it is no longer under warranty.
Step 4:Be sure to clean your PS3. You don't want dust to start to build-up around the fan area, so clean your PS3 to prvent build-up. A simple dust cloth will do the trick.
Fixing the yellow light of death:If you do have the yellow light of death, or want to be able to fix it if it happens to you in the future, but your PS3 isn’t under warranty and you don’t want to pat to have it sent in, there are ways you can fix it yourself. There are available repair kits, and there are videos online that help you. So if you do get it, do not panic, you can fix it yourself and save yourself $200 dollars in the process.
