A Look At Some Starcraft 2 Stargate Tactics
It pays dividends to take some time to learn about some of the Protoss Stargate tactics since this building is instrumental for executing various strategies while playing the game as Protoss. The Stargate produces the majority of the air units available to the Protoss in StarCraft 2.
This structure requires a Cybernetics Core to be warped in beforehand and this structure can only be built where there is an existing psionic matrix. The Stargate also needs to constantly be within a psionic matrix in order for it to produce air units.
The Stargate can warp in two types of air units from the get go. The first unit that can be produced from this structure is the Phoenix. The Pheonix is a light aircraft that is effective against other air targets. It also has a special ability that allows it to pick up ground units, disabling them and allowing for other anti air units to shoot at them in the air.
The second unit that the Stargate can produce is the Void Ray. The Void Ray's fire cannot be intercepted by the Terran's Point Defense Drone. It can target both aircraft and ground targets however its weapon takes some time to charge up to deliver its maximum damage. Void rays remain versatile throughout the game with proper upgrades, although they are most at home engaging massive targets to deal the most damage.
The Stargate can produce one more air unit however it requires a Fleet Beacon to be warped in beforehand. The third and final unit that can be produced from this structure is the mighty Carrier. This powerful unit can engage both air and ground targets at a large distance by deploying interceptor aircraft. One must be wary of anti air fire however as the interceptors are not free. Air unit upgrades are especially useful for the carrier as they are applied to each individual interceptor.
The Stargate has an interesting flaw in that it displays a different animation depending on which unit is being produced. This means that enemy scouts can tell which aircraft are being produced from your Stargates at a glance.
A Stargate opening in StarCraft 2 is indeed riskier than a Robotics Bay opening, however you can sometimes surprise your opponent by hiding your Stargate in your base. This would also mean that your opponent will not know which air units are being produced if they suspect that something is up.
Unlike the Terran Starport the Stargate does not warp in detector aircraft which also adds to the risk of going with a Stargate opening. Despite this the units produced from the Stargate remain viable throughout the game provided that they are managed well and used in combination with ground forces to wipe out the enemy.
