For the Terran race, please note that the refinery is a crucial building. The main purpose of this is that it mines Vespene Gas- a valuable resource in this game as many of you might already know. When you start the game, look for the two Vespene Geysers. They will be near your first base.
There is an upgrade available and that is the Building Armor. To upgrade armor at the relevant structure, the hotkey is B. This requires the Engineering Bay as well as 150 minerals and gas and 140 seconds Duration.
As far as requirements goes, this structure requires 75 minerals, 30 build time, and 50 total repair time. The vitals are 500 hit points. Other important information includes the grid size is 3 by 3 and the sight radius is 9.
Refineries are also needed in the Banshee Rush strategy. This building is vital to the rush. To execute this rush, you must first build a Supply Depot, then a Refinery. Here you should assign 3 SCVs.
As the game goes on, you must then build the Barracks, then build the Refinery Number 2. 3 SCVS are needed here as well. After that, create the Factory, then the 2 Starports, another Supply Depot, Tech Lab on the Barracks, Tech Lab on the Factory, and then swap the 2 Starports with the Barracks and the Factory.
If you are wondering, SCV stands for the Space Construction Vehicle. It gathers resources for you to use, constructs buildings, and can also repair the Terran units and buildings. It is obviously an essential part of this game, so when you go places, gather them when you can. It has been noted that these can collect about 4 gas at a time and then they will often return it to the nearest Command Center.
The Command Center, if you are not currently aware, is completely essential to a base. This is where you will typically bring any minerals or gas that you have collected. Here you will also find yourself able to relocate to a new area. You can collect 5 Space Construction Vehicles here that you are able to take with you to this new location.
The greatest time for you to build a refinery is when you will require gas for more advanced units and tech. However, getting a refinery too early could also be in your opponent's favor because it gives them a chance to take you down in a rush while you recoup the cost of your refinery.
