Not all race horses that have captured audience’s attention have always performed exceedingly well and the same applies to those who didn’t receive a major hype from the media but had a firm element that goes in horse racing, within. Many had turned down Seabiscuit and his chances of excellence prior to his instant shot to stardom starting his fourth year of life and almost first in hard core professional racing. A very similar story goes for a horse that may have had the heart for the winner, he might not have received a equally motivating front to prove his mettle. Holy Bull, the number 64th on Blood-Horse magazine’s Top 100 racehorses, was much more than just a number.
Born in 1991, Holy Bull’s sire Great Above and dam Sharon Brown weren’t too much of famous thoroughbreds themselves. However, he was trained well, by Warren A. Croll Jr and went on to open his maiden wins by a victory with one at Manmouth Park as a two year old. Holy Bull went on to race four times during his first racing season winning four. His second year of racing as a three year old witnessed him opening ten times, the unbeaten Holy Bull in his first season won eight out of them. While most of the second year races were Grade 1, Holy Bull made his mark with both grade 1 and below races. However, in the 1994, Holy Bull ended running the favourite for the Kentucky Derby but the ‘Bull’ closed a 12th.
The Triple Crown was soon scraped off the list of target races following his disappointing finish in the Derby but Holy Bull soon returned with vindication and rode a six undefeated streak of races starting with Metropolitan, Travers, Haskell, Woodward Stakes, Dwyer Stakes and also the Blue Grass Stakes with many others. Holy Bull was ridden to all is victories with legendary jockey Mike E. Smith. His last winning performance happened at the Olympic Handicap which soon followed with an injury he sustained during the Donn Handicap.
Holy Bull was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001. The U.S. Champion Three year old Colt and the U.S. Horse of the Year 1994 had a little short of a superbly successful story. The colt whose performances as a three year old only got better as he turned four, had a short lived exposure following his injury.
However, even the seemingly short career won his accolades and a fan following.
