Shackleford’s Racing Season – What the Current was, what the Future will be

There may not have been a chain of remarkable wins by this unfortunate star on the racing arena but is questionably strange how the air of anticipation and expectation never seems to run out on this silently capable race horse. The chestnut colt derives a major contribution to his pedigree, influences from some reputed players in the racing business like Storm Cat and Unbridled. His sire Forestry may have never won a substantial race but he exhibited a thoroughly consistent performance by finishing in the money in 10 out of 11 starts with him as a three year old.
Forestry had during his racing years that may look somewhat of a short stint, broke the King’s Bishop Stakes record of 28 years and also equalled the Holy Bull record at the Dwyer Stakes. It is very reminiscent of his sire that Shackleford has always been seen to push the limits, then whether or not he succeeded, was a different question. Born a chestnut, Shackleford was foaled in February, 2008. The maiden racing year as a two year old may not have been very impressive for the colt but his opening race in his sophomore gave him the opportunity to make his first win in an allowance race run at Gulfstream Park.
After a brief defeat at a grade two event once again held at Gulfstream Park, Shackleford’s Florida Derby effort was worth a watch. Held at Gulfstream Park, once again Shackleford was running the track he had run in the past as well. He started strong, overtaking Arch Traveler and To Honour and Serve. However, towards the final turn he was once again competed by To Honour and Serve that he repelled only to end in a speed duel with Dialed In who won the race by a head. However his Florida Derby has won him a Kentucky Derby ticket.
The Run for the Roses may not have witnessed the best form from Shackleford but soon after in the Preakness, holding Animal Kingdom safely tucked in second place, he won the Preakness making more than a million in the final payoffs. During the Belmont Stakes, he once again set high expectations by leading the field for most of the distance but eventually fading off to fifth.
During the remaining of the racing season, Shackleford was defeated once again by Coil by a head during the Haskell Invitational, eighth in the Travers and then second in the Indiana Derby. He still delivered some consistence by finishing in the money when he closed a second place finish in the Breeder’s Cup Dirt Mile where he lost by 4 lengths to Caleb Posse.
Whether or not Shackleford makes Breeder’s Cup and many other graded stakes the points to ponder for his list of events next year is still an open question. The race horse may have been a panting contender for longer distances but he sure has the capability to push through and make incredible changes to the race presumptions. Shackleford may like many other horses bloom to a full-fledged racer in his next year of racing, who knows. Time should tell.
