Buckpasser – The World’s Perfect Thoroughbred

It’s funny how Buckpasser accomplished anything even remotely close to what his name meant. Also referred to as the flawless racehorse by racing official, Dr. Manuel Gilman, Buckpasser was a painter’s delight. Richard Stone Reeves said, “Buckpasser was the most perfectly proportioned thoroughbred I have ever seen”. And exactly that’s how he was. He was born with a champion’s heart, easy to handle off the track but once on it, Buckpasser preferred galloping all the way to winner’s post without decelerating or trying to maintain a lead. He believed in taking a greater lead until he was capable of it.
Foaled in 1963, he had inherited the most refined racing genes any pedigree could offer. Born to Handicap Triple Crown winner and Horse of the Year Tom Fool and dam Busanda, sired by War Admiral and grand-sired by the world champion Man O’ War himself, Buckpasser was bred to excel. With a legacy as impressive as this one, Buckpasser had a tall order to accomplish.Trained initially by Bill Winfrey, Buck ran his maiden race to finish disappointingly fourth but that was the only time he ever finished out of money. Hence started a long array of incredible stalking and overtaking races, all of which he undoubtedly did justice to.
Buckpasser ran to conquer the Champagne Stakes, Tremont Stakes and also the Hopeful. After a nothing short of an impressive two year old opening, Buckpasser began with his three year old campaign which included a cracked ankle that kept him out of racing for more than three months affecting his participation in the Triple Crown. However, soon after he returned, Buckpasser made a record breaking performance with Arlington Classic, running the mile in 1:32 3/5; a record that stood until Dr.Fager broke it in 1968.
His three year old season was nothing less of a miraculous comeback after having lost his opportunity to showcase his mettle by winning something more critically acclaimed like a Triple Crown. He ran to win 15 races back to back undefeated; Travers Stakes, Brooklyn Handicap and Lawrence Realization along with the strenuous test of endurance, the two mile Jockey Club Gold Cup. The sophomore racing season won him the Eclipse Award for the year but he still had more.
The final racing season for Buckpasser set off with a win in the San Fernando Stakes. Soon after, however, he once again was temporarily kept off racing due to another crack developing in his hoof. Buck resumed racing after a layoff of almost 4 months and won the Metropolitan Mile that became his last win in his array of 15. Buck soon was retired to stand stud where he sired a staggering 313 foals. Buckpasser was ranked 14 by the BloodHorse Magazine.
