While it is strongly believed that a thoroughbred derives most of its genetic blueprints from its dam than its sire, Miss Woodford quite clearly contradicted the fundamental rule. Foaled in 1880 at the Runnymede Farm by Colonel Catesby Woodford and his partner Colonel E. Clay, Miss Woodford was by Billet and dam Fancy Jane, a pedigree not even remotely close to what she achieved as a racing thoroughbred.
Miss Woodford started in 48 races in her entire racing career winning 37 of them. She finished runner up in 7 and second in 2 other races keeping herself in the money in 46 races. Her biggest accomplishment came from her race earnings, the highest ever any horse earned in those days, at $100,000 making her the first ever horse to achieve a target as high as this.
Before racing for the Dwyer colours, Miss Woodford started as a two year old in the SpinAway Stakes, running it for Bowen and Company, winning it straight without much effort, drawing away the five furlongs in 1:03 ½ from runners up, All Hands Around and Empress. Soon purchased by the Dwyer Brothers Stable, notorious for their rigorous racing schedules, Miss Woodford did absolute justice to the gruelling racing schedule she was soon subjected to. However, she was a show in for the profile. Dwyer Brothers had recently retired Hindoo and Miss Woodford fit the bill perfectly.
Her three, four and five year old seasons comprised of a sixteen race winning streak that included the Great Eastern Handicap, Ladies Handicap, Monmouth Oaks, Alabama Stakes and the Ocean Stakes. She won the Ocean Stakes for three consecutive seasons, including winning it the first time against stable mate and a top stallion, George Kinney.
Her next most prominent win came from the Eclipse Stakes where she defeated American Derby winners’, male horses, Modesty along with Volante. Miss Woodford retired post her highest earnings accomplishment to broodmare duties. However, her progeny failed to achieve similar racing excellence as hers. Her two stakes winners, Sombre and George Kessler never acquired the same level of prominence including her other progeny. Miss Woodford’s career ended at the fifth place with Gallorette leading the top American fillies’ list.
Miss Woodford was fortunately experienced by top trainers of her times; James Rowe Sr., Sunny Fitzsimmons, all asserting the fact that she was probably one of the best fillies of all times the North American continent had ever produced.
Miss Woodford was a great contributor to the horse racing arena which is why the legend has been captured forever in the new age format of the sport, one that believes in keeping history alive.
