Although this fight can be hectic, Guardians won’t find themselves stuck inside overpowered shields, frozen in time, or tainted. There will be a lot of splash damage and in your face action, but as long as you have a solid team and good communication, this fight is yours to win.
Of course, that’s assuming you are a high enough level to compete with the enemies and boss. It can be done at lower levels, but we would suggest that you are at least the same level as the event itself. If it’s a 34, bring your maxed our character for this fight. If it’s a 32, you can get away with something not quite as highly ranked.
When the fight begins, head out of the airlock and to the left. Keep going until you find a corner that you can tuck inside. This is where you will stay for the rest of the fight. There is a wall here that Valus Trau’ug cannot shoot over, so you will stand here and do damage. There will be an overwhelming number of his thugs with him, and every now and then one will wander into your safe spot, but for the most part you can hang out here and do work. Assign one person to damage the boss, one person to control adds, and one person to float (do both).
It would be highly advisable for the teammate assigned to adds to bring a high powered Shotgun that does Solar damage. This is strictly to deal with the Imperial Centurions that will have Solar shields. If you can take them out quickly, the rest are rather simple to control. Hand Cannons are also great since most of the Cabal have critical hit spots on their heads. Precision is key.
The person who is damaging the boss will have to have a variety of elemental weapons ready. This is because Valus Trau’ug’s shield will switch throughout the fight. Sometimes you will need Solar, sometimes you will need Arc, and sometimes you will need Void. For Solar, think Gjallarhorn or Ice Breaker. Also, as much as it isn’t a popular weapon, the Murmur isn’t a bad option simply because you can switch the damage it does between Arc and Solar.
The floater of your squad should be primarily on adds, but when Valus Trau’ug’s shield goes down they need to switch to damaging the boss. Lay a beating on him, and then when he spawns in more minions to mess up your life, the floater should turn their attention back to crowd control.
As for what types of Guardians to bring, it’s really up to you. We are fans of the Titan and Defender Subclass since that gives us Ward of Dawn and Weapons of Light. Weapons of Light (when popped as Valus Trau’ug loses his shield) can help you deal extra damage and take him down quickly. If you have a Gjallarhorn this combination is very deadly, so take advantage of it if you have the option.
That’s pretty much the fight in a nutshell. The main thing to remember is that you need to adjust to the type of shield Valus Trau’ug has, and every time his shield goes back up, more adds are inbound. Once you’ve won you’ll want to return to the airlock to get inside the Treasure Room (don’t forget your Treasure Key).
