Upon leaving Vault 111, head back to Sanctuary to meet Codsworth in your old house. If you search the ground in Shaun’s bedroom, you will find the “You’re SPECIAL!” children’s book. Picking up the book will prompt you to upgrade one of the main perk tree attributes of your choice. Luckily, there is a nifty way to repeat this method in just a few simple steps.
First, enter Shaun’s old bedroom and pick up the You’re SPECIAL! book, if you haven’t done so already. Then, head outside and call Dogmeat over to your location. Bring up your Pip-Boy, and locate the You’re SPECIAL! book in the miscellaneous section of your inventory.
Pulling off this exploit comes down to a matter of timing. The goal is to drop the book on the ground, and command Dogmeat pick it up to retrieve it. Once Dogmeat approaches to pick up the book, you must quickly grab it yourself at the same time. This should place one book back into your inventory, while Dogmeat drops a duplicate book on the ground.
Now, bring up your Pip-Boy once more, and drop all of the You’re SPECIAL! books on the ground. When you go to pick up these duplicates, at least one of them should prompt you to increase your perk attributes once again. Repeat these steps to continue gaining skill points to quickly level up your main perk attributes.
The timing of this exploit can be a bit tricky. Try to put some space between yourself and Dogmeat, otherwise you may accidentally pick up the book too soon before Dogmeat can duplicate it. As Dogmeat approaches, he’ll pause just before lowering down to get the book. Try to grab the book just as he lowers his head in order for both of you to receive a copy. This method only seems to work with Dogmeat, since the other companions will keep the book upon taking it.
This method will also work on other items, including weapon mods and junk items. However, this does not work for duplicating ammo, unfortunately. Since the You’re SPECIAL! book and Dogmeat are both available very early on in the game, this is a nice simple way to increase your main perk abilities to max rank before conquering the wasteland.
Since PC users have plenty of cheat codes at their command, this is an interesting way for console players to get in on the fun.
