Dark Souls Walkthrough Part 8 - Lower Undead Burg
Having tackled those ridiculous Gargoyles time to ascend the stairs on the far side. At the top ring the bell to get halfway done with the bells. Now head all the way down the spire. Talk with Oswald of Carim at the bottom. Retrace your steps through the Parish to where you encountered the Dragon. At the other side of the bridge, where you first saw the dragon, you will find the door you are after.
Immediately after entering the area head up the stairs on your right. These are very easy to miss and the shortcut is incredibly helpful. You will unlock a gate at the top which serves as a shortcut back to the main section of Undead Burg.
*Head into the main section of Undead Burg and pick up the Residence Key for 1000 souls.
Now head back down. When you get closer to the bottom move slowly as there are a number Undead Dogs waiting there. Move carefully and take them on while on the stairs to limit their movement options. Now, after the dogs, head to the right. Keep close to the wall on the left, moving forward slowly, until you hear someone asking for help. Use the key to meet a new NPC, Griggs of Vinheim. Talk with him a few times and he will head off to the Firelink Shrine. He is an instructor in the ways of magic. Be sure to see him next time you are at the Firelink Shrine.
Keep moving along this right-hand path carefully. You will encounter a number of Torch Zombies. Do not get surrounded and you can claim the Twin Humanities at the back of the room. Now head back to the main area and move forward, to the left of the stairs that lead you here. Keep on guard and have your shield up. There are a number of Undead Assassins in this corridor. Keep near a corner to stop them from just hailing you with throwing knives. Lure them to you and work carefully as they will block and parry a lot.
Keep your eyes on the left as you make your way down the corridor. You will find a Large Lost Soul. There is another group of Assassins here as well. Again, keep your shield up and use corners to stop the throwing knives. Once you clear this group, recoup yourself. Through the White Light is another boss fight.
Carpa Demon (and Undead Dogs)
First focus on the Undead Dogs. They are faster than the Demon which is to your advantage here. Focus on them, possible going up the stairs, to narrow the battlefield and let you focus more on the Dogs. Aim to go up the stairs to the landing they lead to. Here the Demon cannot reach you thus you can safely focus on the Dogs. Once the dogs are dead it is time to focus in on the Demon. It is very easy to dodge or block many of its attacks. You can also take advantage of the Archway that the stairs lead to for some quick plunge attacks to inflict a lot of damage fast on it. If your character is much more ranged focused, then just stay at the top of the stairs and snipe the Demon from there. It will not be too long of a battle.
Head on out of the room after you kill the demon. Be wary as there are Undead Assassins waiting none too far away. There is one in plain sight while another is hiding around the corner. If you can, snipe the assassin to draw it to you and throw off their little plan. After the assassins continue forward. Off to the side is another Merchant who will offer to sell you quite the variety of goods:

If you continue in the same room you will find a passage back to the Firelink Shrine. Open this up so you have easy access. Take a little time, need be, to restock and refresh there. When you are ready, return here and go through the next door into the Depths.
