This walkthrough will cover how to obtain the Fragment of Invincibility by defeating the optional Immortal boss battle. You will have to have defeated the three Gigantuars already if you want to take on this quest, so keep that in mind. After beating the Gigantuars, speak with Hunter, just like you did before the Ochu battle. As he did then, he will now point you in the direction of someone with a contract out on a powerful monster. In this case, that person is Myta. You can find her in the Nomad Camp area at the bottom of the stairs that lead to the weather control device. She will offer you the Fragment of Invincibility side quest, which you should accept. Change the weather to cloudy before heading out.
Simply travel to the waypoint in the Stonestump Wastelands area to challenge Immortal.
Boss Battle: Immortal
Immortal will sometimes summon a Centaurion Blade for assistance. Both the Centaurion Blade and Immortal are weak against Fire. You can’t stop Immortal from summoning the Centaurion Blade, but you can at least prepare to take out the others that he will summon. Use the Superiority Paradigm early on in the battle to prepare for the creature’s appearance, and then use Deprotect once it appears. Cast Shell on your party as well, as it will come in handy when the more powerful attacks start to fly. Watch out for Immortal’s Electrocute attack, which he will cast every so often. It is very powerful, and can reduce your health to a sliver at a moment’s notice. Because of this, you should also make sure that you are healing fairly often.
With all of your focus initially going towards buffing, debuffing, and healing, building the Chain Gauge may be slow work. Because of this, when you do go on the offensive you should use a Paradigm with a lot of Ravagers, because they build the Chain Gauge faster than other classes. The Smart Bomb Paradigm is a good choice here, as your two Ravagers can cast magic while your Saboteur works on decreasing the enemy’s defenses with Deprotect. As you begin to gain some significant traction on the Chain Gauge, watch out for Immortal’s Electrocute move. He should begin casting it soon. The instant you see the notification pop up onscreen, switch to either the Tortoise or the Guarded Assault (two Sentinels and a Commando) Paradigm. Right after the spell hits, switch to the Discretion Paradigm using two Medics for fast healing.
After Electrocute is cast, the Centaurion Blade will gain Bravery and Enthunder. Use a Saboteur’s Dispel to remove these buffs and continue on with the fight. Stick with the Smart Bomb Paradigm for damage, as you will be able to build up the Chain Gauge very quickly using this method while your Saboteur ensures that your enemies can never properly buff themselves, a tactic that the Centaurion Blade is fond of. Deprotect Immortal again as you are about to stagger him, and then switch to the Discretion Paradigm as soon as the enemy is staggered. Use both Medics in the Paradigm to heal quickly before switching to the Decimation Paradigm (one Commando, one Ravager, and one Synergist) to buff your party while attacking. After a few rounds of buffing your party, switch to the Cerberus Paradigm and quickly attack the Centaurion Blade. Properly buffed, your attacks should be devastating.
The Centaurion Blade will fall, but Immortal will still be alive after the stagger is up. Now that you have defeated one enemy, you can focus properly on the main threat. Switch back to the Decimation Paradigm. Have your Synergist continually buffing your party while your Commando uses Launch to drive Immortal up into the air. When this happens, keep it in the air as long as possible and use Ultima Arrow. Immortal should be staggered again soon. Switch to the Cerberus Paradigm and attack it with everything you have. You should be able to beat Immortal around the time that the Chain Gauge reaches its end, or right afterwards.
Defeating Immortal will grant you a whopping 30,000 experience points, plus the Fragment of Invincibility. There is also a chance that Immortal will drop some rare and powerful weapons for your troubles. Indrajit and Romulus & Remus are the names of the weapons, and they are both very potent, with high ATB rates defining their use as great Chain Gauge builders. If you do not get the weapons, you can reset the area and return in an attempt to get them, or just not bother. They are strong, but there are still a few more powerful weapons out there.
