Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Walkthrough Part 1: Races: Humans, Asari, & Drell

There are a total of seven different races for players to choose from when signing in to the Mass Effect 3 Galaxy At War multiplayer mode. Each race has its own strengths and weaknesses, its own inherent perks, and its own class restrictions. This walkthrough will cover the humans, the asari, and the drell in detail, including their available classes and powers.

Humans

The humans are the all-arounders of Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer. You may choose either a male or female human to represent you during combat, just like in the single player mode. From here, you can assign one of any class to the human. Humanity is a varied species capable of taking on any combat role that you assign them. This means that they can be an Edept, an Engineer, an Infiltrator, a Sentinel, a Soldier, or a Vanguard. Possessing the traits necessary for every class in the game means that humans are not necessarily the most specialized of the races, however. You will find that the humans are kind of like the equivalent of vanilla ice cream; they are inoffensive to just about everyone, but they lack some of the specific flavor of the other races.

That said, this race naturally plays the most similarly to Shepard did in the campaign, meaning that this is one of the few races with a straight up dodge roll mapped to the A button. Other races, like the Asari, will have similar functions but with slightly different results. Therefore, the humans may be the most comfortable race for new players to adopt.

Overall, humans are the most versatile of the species in the game, but they come at the cost of specialization. They can blend in well with just about any squad due to their vast array of different loadout possibilities, so they are always a solid choice.

Asari

While the humans are capable of serving any role during battle, the Asari have been highly specialized towards Biotics, and it shows in their pair of class options. Instead of the typical combat roll, Asari can use a dash of sorts that drains some energy in exchange for moving them quickly and precisely across the battlefield. They also channel their mastery of Biotics through their melee attacks, something that most other classes are not strong enough to do. Instead of the typical charged melee attack of the humans, the Asari will slam into the ground and send out a sort of shockwave of Biotic energy tearing through everything in a circle around them. This massive attack takes a little longer than other charged melee attacks to charge up.

The powerful melee serves to complement the Asari’s combat abilities. This is to say, they are weaker than other races such as Krogans and Drell physically, so they need a devastating melee attack for when things get tough. Asari are quick and agile, but they won’t always be able to skirt danger on the battlefield.

If you decide to play as an Asari, it would be wise to pack a small loadout. Because so many of the Asari’s best abilities are Biotics, you will want to have an incredibly fast power recharge time, which means you will want to carry as little in the way of weaponry as you can. Adepts should leave with just a Pistol and an SMG, while Vanguards will want the Pistol or SMG along with a good Shotgun.

Available Classes:

Adept:

·         Stasis

·         Warp

·         Throw

Vanguard

·         Biotic Charge

·         Stasis

·         Lift Grenade

In addition to the above stated powers, all Asari will have access to Fitness and Asari Justicar skill trees.

Drell

The Drell are a mysterious race. They are slightly faster and naturally more well-armored than their Asari counterparts, but they lack the raw Biotic power that the Asari command. They also cannot match the pure aggression of the Krogan or the armor of the Humans; in the grand scheme of things, they are still one of the weaker classes when it comes to armor. For this reason, the Drell are sort of an in between race in many ways. They are, however, faster than average with their melee strikes, betraying this race’s talent for assassination. This makes the Drell an interesting race to play. They have both Adept and Vanguard classes available to them, just like the Asari, but both come with significant risks. The Drell are not as good at casting Biotics as the Asari are, although they are still better than the Humans are at it. When playing an Adept, Drell will have to rely upon their speed to skirt around the enemies, catching them up in Biotics before finishing them with a burst of gunfire. When playing a Vanguard, the Drell’s physical weaknesses must be taken into account. The Vanguard class is one that is all about getting up close with an enemy, and doing this could very well be deadly for the Drell. For this reason, you should skirt around the enemy with dodge rolls after getting in close with a Biotic Charge. Hit them with Shotgun attacks, or back off and use Cluster Grenade, to weaken more resilient enemies.

No matter which of the two available classes you choose for your Drell, you will get the Cluster Grenade ability. This makes Drell players highly effective against groups of enemies, or enemies with shields (such as almost all of the Cerberus forces.) The Drell also possess a great dodge move, faster and more agile than the Human’s and the Asari’s. Just like with the Asari classes, you will want to keep your loadout relatively slim when playing as a Drell because most of their classes rely on spewing out Biotics. Bring in a Pistol and an SMG, or a Shotgun if you are playing as a Vanguard.

Available Classes:

Adept:

·         Reave

·         Pull

·         Cluster Grenade

Vanguard:

·         Biotic Charge

·         Pull

·         Cluster Grenade

In addition to the above stated powers, all Drell will have access to Fitness and Assassin skill trees.
