After you have looted Pete’s Treasure Map from his corpse (see the previous guide for more details on this) it will be up to you to use the pirate’s map to find out the final location of his secret treasure. Much like O’Brian’s Treasure, this quest will lead you to a specific location on Tacarigua and reward you greatly when you find it.
This quest will automatically be triggered after you collect the map. Luckily, you won’t have to search far in order to find the location of the buried treasure. It is just to the north, in front of the large and imposing temple towering before you. Like O’Brian’s Treasure, it will be marked by a large red X on the ground, so finding it shouldn’t exactly be an issue. You will need a shovel to get at it, though. Luckily, if you haven’t purchased one from Flannigan already, you can find a shovel sitting right next to the large red X. Pick up the shovel and get to work. Approach the large X and click the left mouse button to begin the dig. You will soon be dragging the chest out of the ground. You will have now completed the quest, which will reward you with a nice 100 Glory points. The real reward is inside of the chest, though.
Open up Pete’s chest. Inside of it, you will find a Gold Nugget, an Idol, the Meerschaum Pipe, and 700 gold. You will also get the respect of Steelbeard for uncovering the chest, so don’t forget to bring the whole thing up when you are speaking with him later in an attempt to become a pirate.
While you are near the temple, you had might as well complete the Old Grave Plundered quest as well. To begin this one, head inside of the temple entrance to the north. You may have heard tell of this grave earlier, from an NPC on the sugar plantation named Asad. He will have warned you about the dangers of the temple. It is indeed guarded by some very powerful enemies, but as it turns out, if you go the right way, you don’t have to cross any of these enemies. Just be on your guard for traps as you leave the temple.
Technically, there are three different temples on the island, but in order to complete this quest you need only loot one of them. The one by Pete’s body is the easiest and most convenient to loot, though. When you are inside of the main atrium, simply head to the left and use the space bar to climb up the ledge. Walk down the hall and you will see an idol sitting atop an altar of some sort. Approach the idol and take it from the altar. You may want to save your game now, as you will have to watch out for a trap on the way out. Turn around and leave through the same hall that you came in by. Be ready on the space bar, as you will need to complete a short quick time event in order to dodge the trap that will come hurtling out of the wall in the middle of the hallway on your way out. Once you get past the trap, drop back down to ground level and leave the temple the same way that you came in by. You will have completed the quest. Note that there are other paths that you can take in this temple if you want to explore more, but they are guarded by powerful enemies who will make short work of you at your current level. Exploring further is best saved for another time.
Be sure to bring this quest up when you speak to Captain Steelbeard as well, as he will want to hear all about it.
