Freeing Largo is one of the larger, more involved side
quests on Tacarigua. You should have already met up with Largo and recovered
his clothes and other stolen items for him by now, if you have been following
along with this guide. You can speak with him some more to learn that he wishes
to be freed (not exactly tough to hazard a guess at this one, but you will have
to find the correct conversation option referencing an escape in order to
trigger the quest.)
After you have told Largo about his clothes and recovered them, he will ask what you want to do next. If you tell him that you want to find the pirates and join up with them, he will tell you where you can find a lock pick and ask you to use it to free him. Agree to help free Largo and you will unlock this quest. Note that you can refuse to free him or tell him to mind his own business, but either of these options will cause you to fail the quest permanently. Barring a reloaded save, you will not be able to go back and fix your mistake, so be careful which options you choose.
The first step in freeing Largo is to get your hands on that
lock pick that the prisoner mentioned earlier. Largo will tell you that the
lock pick is currently in the possession of a man named Stone. Stone will work
the smith at the pirate’s camp back to the northeast. This should theoretically
be a simple leg of the quest because Largo claims to know Stone, and claims
that the blacksmith owes him a favor. Of course, nothing ever goes quite
according to plan. So prepare for trouble when you set out on this quest.
Head back to the pirate camp and run into the main town square area. There will be five houses here. The blacksmith’s workshop will be on the southern curve of the town square, towards the bottom. Enter it to find Stone. Tell him about Largo’s predicament and ask for the lock pick. Stone won’t believe you. He will ask for proof that you know Largo. These two pieces of evidence will come in the form of the Black Pearl and the Pirate’s Bandana items, both of which you should have obtained already as part of the The Clothes of a Pirate quest line. When you hand over the evidence, Stone will give you the lock pick but he will also ask for 500 gold as compensation. Mention to him that he owes Largo a debt, and he will drop the asking price to free.
If you don’t have the clothes for evidence for whatever reason, don’t worry. You can still get the lock pick from Stone, but it will cost you. If you need to, head to Steelbeard’s ship in port. Get on and go up by the steering wheel to find an NPC named MacLaine. Speak with him to learn about a chest underneath of the ship that nobody can open. He will also say that the lock pick that is needed to open it is held by none other than Stone. MacLaine will challenge you to open it. Agree to the challenge and you can simply pay 500 gold for the lock pick.
Now that you have the lock pick in hand you can free Largo,
but you can’t do so without a fight. Return to the prison and hand the key to
the prisoner through the bars. Without skipping a beat, Largo will use the key
to open up his cell right in front of Carter, the prison’s guard. Carter will
attack you, and you will have to beat him back. Block his sword attacks and
either step far back enough to use a firearm or close the distance and strike
rapidly with melee attacks. After defeating the guard, he will for some reason
be pretty okay with the fact that you just helped a prisoner escape, explaining
to you that he believes you had no significant part in the escape despite the
fact that you just beat him up.
Now that everything is settled with Carter and Largo has
escaped, head to the east to find the escaped convict. Talk with him to get the
lock pick back in your possession. This nifty item will stay with you in your
inventory for the remainder of your journey, so be sure to get it back as it
will prove extremely helpful. After your conversation, Largo will head back to
the pirate camp to hang out in the tavern. If you want, you can accompany him
there. Agreeing to accompany the fugitive will open up another quest, Follow
Largo, that will be covered in the next guide.
You will receive 100 Glory points for completing this quest, along with a lock pick and 50 more Glroy points for beating back Carter. You will also be able to mention that you freed Largo to Captain Steelbeard, who will think more highly of you because of this fact.
