Game of Thrones Walkthrough Part 72 – Alester – The Maggot in the Apple
*This quest is only available if you Side with Gawen and talk with him. This is strictly available before going into the Dungeons of Castlewood in Chapter 10, "Crossroads."
Before Alester and Gawen head into the dungeon, go out into the Courtyard. Take a moment and visit the merchants to restore any lost supplies in terms of Wildfire, Flammable Oil or Healing Potions. Alester can take some time to talk with Domeric. From him, Alester can learn a bit about Ser Ethan's past. It is not much more than what Ser Ethan talked about himself. For the coming fight, be sure that Alester has access to the Blunt Weapon and a Perforating Weapon.
Head to the opposite side of the Courtyard after Alester talks with Domeric and gets more potions. Alester does a handy job of provoking Ethan with little effort. After that, opt to fight Ethan's men before fighting Ethan. First, retreat back to the archway behind you to avoid getting flanked in the future. Immediately, 1 soldier in Heavy Armor with a Polearm will attack. After that one goes down, the remaining pair of guards will attack Alester. 1 is in Heavy Armor while the other is in Medium Armor. Focus first on the one in Heavy Armor as he has more Health. Use your Area of Effect attacks here and feel free to use the R'hllor powers as they are great in situations like these. Be absolutely certain to watch Alester's health though. It is very easy to take too much damage in these cases. Keeping both of them locked in stun will make life a lot easier as well. This is even easier if Alester uses his R'hllor abilities.
After the fight with the men, Ethan complains that his men will be laid up for days with their injuries. At this point, Alester can challenge Ethan or back off. He has come this far, so it is time to face down Ethan.
Ethan of the Reach
He is an Elite Boss in Heavy Armor. After fighting 2 on 1, just 1 on 1 is much easier. Just focus on stunning and inflicting as much damage as quickly as you can. This will stem some of the worst that Ethan can do to Alester. After that, simply focus on inflicting damage. Just keep up the damage and Ethan will not be long before going down.
The reward for this side quest, aside from experience, is that the number of guards that are encountered in the Dungeon and Alester's Escape is notably reduced.
