Dragon Age Origins Walkthrough Part 30 –Companion Quest – Alistair's Family

If you walk around the center of the Denerim Market Place and come up to the North end, to the building next to Wade's Emporium and Alistar is in your party, he will ask if you can go in and see his sister. This is also the one time you have a chance to “Harden” Alistair.

To gain access to this quest there are some basic requirements: Have Alistair in your Party when you visit Redcliffe for the first time (this will reveal who his father is), Have his approval at Warm or Interested (26+), or complete “Urn of Sacred Ash”.

With those requirements met, you will trigger a conversation when you pass by Goldanna's House. At this point you can head inside and talk with her and set everything into motion. The two start talking.

Alistair introduces himself and states that he is her brother. Goldanna is quite surprised by this and accuses the party of pulling a joke on her. The Warden can respond as follows:
He's telling the truth. Listen to him.
Are you sure your information was correct, Alistair?
Maybe you two should be left alone?

Alistair explains that he was born in Redcliffe Castle to their Mother, a Serving Girl. Goldanna tells Alistair that she hear that he and his mother had died. The people of Redcliffe Castle bribed her to stay silent and when she returned to get a little more they simply ran her off. Now the Warden has these Responses:
I don't think this was a good idea
So is she everything you expected, Alistair? (-1 Alistair)
That's hardly Alistair's fault, is it? (+1 Alistair)

Goldanna rages after that choice regardless of which you take. She has a lot of mouths to feed and not a lot of money to do it with. Now the Warden has some choices, some of which will end the conversation.
Persaude: Goldanna, Alistair came here hoping to find his family. (Male Wardens can end the conversation and Alistair makes Goldanna a promise)
You've got some nerve talking to your brother like this.
This is your family. Perhaps you can help them out?
It looks like all she wants is your money.

Goldanna will press Alistair for a promise that her family will be looked after. From there the Warden can choose:
It's true, you are going to be king, after all …
This is the family you were searching for Alistair.
It looks like all she wants is your money
Let's go Alistair. There's nothing for you here.

Once outside, the Warden and Alistair have a conversation. He confesses that nothing went the way he expected it to work out. Here is where you can trigger the chance to Harden Alistair:
I don't know what to say. I'm sorry it turned out like this.
Everyone is out for themselves. You should learn that (Prompts for the Hardening Conversation with Alistair later)
I care about you (+2 Alistair, if in active romance)
I care about you. More than you know (Activates romance)
That's who it goes. We should really get under way. (-20)
You're an idiot. How naïve can you get (Approval to 0, ends Romance)

After this, head to the Party's Camp and talk with Alistair there. If he has an approval of 75+, then you can have the hardening Conversation with him. This will change a lot of how he acts and makes more things possible to do with him. He is less good and more neutral after.

Hardening Conversation:
Tip: Do not choose any option involving: "That's not what I meant"
Alistair: You know, I've been thinking
Warden: Choose any:
What have you been thinking about?
I was about to ask if you were feeling sick.
Such a rare event is worth informing me of, sure.
This isn't a good time to chat  (-1 Alistair)

Back when we left Goldanna's …
Warden can choose:
So long as you listen to me, it sounds fine.
That's not what I meant. Don't do that! (-10 and may not harden Alistair)
Don't let me influence you, Alistair
    It's about time, I say. (+1 Alistair)

Then from this point on, I'll be looking out for myself more …
Warden:
    Great. Let's just go
I feel the same way (+1 Alistair)
    Thank you. That's very sweet.
    Don't thank me, thank yourself

The conversation ends there. As long as you did not take the few options to avoid hardening Alistair, he will assert he will look out for himself more.
