This free fps shooter game is a lot of fun, absolutely free, and the large community is very active updating it constantly. The game is light-hearted and comical, with a lot of 60’s references throughout which include the characters, items, map models and menus. The games production is of a high standard and is simple and entertaining for anyone from 13-83 years old.

There are 9 ‘classes’ which are different characters with different strengths and weaknesses. For example the scout is fast but light on with weapons, where the heavy weapons guy is slow, but armed to the teeth. The classes are clearly defined in their characters as well, each with their own background stories on YouTube, (which are entertaining to watch even if you don’t like the game.) and attitudes, and attributes.

Best part - Because the TF2 community is updating the game so often, there are plenty of guns to choose from although you have to play to earn new weapons. You can even dress characters up with different hats and outfits if that takes your fancy.

Worst Part - Team Fortress 2 takes a little understanding and is not as action packed as other games. Team Fortress 2 does involve tactics and takes some time to understand the strategy.

This free fps game is easy to install and play, with little fuss required.

There is no waiting to spawn so its action from start to finish. This game has few nuances and is shooting all the way which is great for new players who just want to get in and shoot something. There is nothing to explain to new people with this game.

The action and style of the game is semi-realistic with the weapons based on real ones and the controls which imitate the actions a real Special Forces soldier. The single player is in the genre of psychological horror, but the multi-player is a free for all (when I have played it anyway.)

Best Part - It is easy to play and understand, if you start your own game, the game you create will act like a server and other people will automatically join, which is great and easy if you want to just shoot something.

Worst Part – Because it is simple, it might bore players who like more strategy and freedom in a game.

This is the most lightweight free fps shooter because it gets played in your browser. You must register, and download a plugin which can take up to an hour depending on your connection.

Quake live is Quake 3 in a browser. Quake 3 was originally released in 1999[1] but is kept updated with this new version. The reincarnation is appealing to those who view video games like different sports, and like the stability, familiarity, and enjoy the skill and talent needed to play the game well.

Because the game has been around for so long, most gamers are familiar with it, and there is always people playing it. Because of the arena nature of the game there are competitions held reasonably often.

Best part - Quake is first about gameplay, which is why people still play this game all these years after the release date. It is also extremely easy to play and you can customize your character.

Worst part - Not amazing graphics and models, and no single player and storyline.

Black Mesa

Black Mesa is a single player, free fps game, that is available on the steam platform. It’s a remake of half-life one, with the half-life two engine, which means the graphics are great and the game is made and produced very well for a free game. It is very well done and a joy to play.

The original half-life was a game that built tension, story and gameplay. It has a great story line and has great fight scenes. It came out ahead of its time so it is still a great game.  

Best Part - With a decent computer and a good graphics card you will appreciate this game more.

Worst Part - You must install steam which is free to play Black Mesa, and it is one player only.

Goldeneye: Source

Who doesn’t like James Bond? In this free fps game, you can feel what it’s like in his shoes, dueling it out with the cast of the movies, in the maps which played a big part of the movies, with the guns that made James Bond famous.

Goldeneye: Source is easy to understand, play and enjoy. The action and gameplay are about as real as a James Bond movie, and more fun, especially with more players. The game is a little tough to set up depending on your computer literacy but when set up, is easy to navigate and play.

Best Part – There are lots of inventive ways to kill each other, and different modes of play. True to the original with better graphics and playability.

Worst Part – Not much fun with less than 3 people, and the maps and models are quite simple looking and there are still a few odd bugs which draw players out of the game.
