Star Wars: The Old Republic: What You Need to Know About Free-to-Play

With the recent announcement about Star Wars: The Old Republic going free-to-play this fall, there are most certainly a number of questions regarding what that means for the title and the players. In a recent Q&A over on the game’s homepage, a lot of these questions were answered. We rounded up the most important and relevant questions for you!

What Are the Restrictions for Free-to-Play?

Free-to-Play members will be able to experience most of the class and world content from level 1-50. However, those members that subscribe will have a number of features that will make playing Star Wars: The Old Republic more convenient, such as an expanded inventory, leveling speed and bank access. The finer details are due to arrive over the course of the next couple of weeks.

Premium Currency - Cartel Coins

One of the newest things coming with the Free-to-Play Option in Star Wars: The Old Republic this fall is the introduction of Cartel Coins. Fortunately, this premium currency will be available for all players, not just the premium ones. However, these coins will have to be purchased via the website as there are no plans for an in-game option at the launch. Free-to-Play members can also purchase and use the Cartel Coins to unlock certain features that may not be available to them.

Will There Still Be New Content After the Changeover?

One of the worries with the change to Free-to-Play is that the content that is to come afterwards may just be “fluffy and fun” stuff to keep players entertained and purchasing new vanity items etc. However, publishers EA have promised to continue major content additions, such as Flashpoints, Operations, Space Missions and Warzones. They have even stated that there will be more frequent updates in the future.
